From Good to Worse to No Return
Submitted Monday, August 20, 2007 - 1:12am [Dine in]

Food: insulting
Service: even more insulting
Overall: big let-down (except the ice lemon tea)

We go to Hong Kong style tea restaurant very often. We have visited this Honolulu on Kingsway 3 times in the past 2 months. The first time, we were impressed. The food was good, and the ice lemon tea was great. They had the right type of crushed ice.

The second time, the service was not as good. When the soup came, the bowl had more bones than soup. The food was a let-down, too. Dry and some looked worse than left-over.

Our last visit, the ice lemon tea was as good as usual. We ordered gailan stir fry with sausage. Half of the dish was cold. How can that be possible when they insisted that it was freshly cooked? The waitress appeared to be helpful and offered to heat up the dish.

However, after she "heat it up", it was colder than before she took it away. Apparently, the waitress thought their customers were so stupid that they couldn't even tell the temperature of the food. To be fair, after talking to the owner, we didn't pay for that particular dish. Of course, no more return and it's out from my list. (Too bad for the ice lemon tea.)

Bert's used to be one of our most favorite Sunday brunch restaurants. We have been satisfied with Bert's for years. Although the price was not on the cheap side, the portion and the food were great. However, our most recent visit was very disappointing.

I usually ordered Spanish omelet. When I had it last time, the cook didn't even bother to beat the eggs, and the hash brown was too burnt and too undercooked. I have never thought I can describe food with these two words in a sentence.

I guess there was a reason when Bert's was no longer packed with people during weekend lunch hours. Sadly, I had to cross it out from my list.

Barely Edible Food with Aloof Service
Submitted Monday, August 20, 2007 - 12:02am [Dine in]

Food: barely edible
Service: friendly but very aloof
Overall: an disappointing experience and it does not even worth the second chance.

We were a group of five. Three of the same burger, one sandwich, and one salisbury plate. Two burgers and the sandwich came first, and the rest was waiting patiently by the kitchen... so were we.

Burger patties were too salty and dry. It was not just well-done... it could almost be described as burnt... barely edible. In addition, they thought tomato, lettuce, slightly boiled celery, broccoli, cauliflower, and pepper are considered "seasonal vegetables". The single slice of tomato should have rested in peace in a trash can long time ago.

From what I have heard, this was not the only bad experience people have had with this place. Glad that I can cross it out from my list.
