I'm pretty impressed. I'd go back
Submitted Saturday, November 10, 2012 - 9:07pm [Dine in]

I had a good time there. I went on a Saturday night and it wasn't too busy. It seems to be Chinese owned but it's a good place.

Ordered sashimi, some kind of roll, beef sashimi, skewers, ebi mayo and a couple other things and a pitcher of Sapporo for $9.99.

The deal was order $15 and get a pitcher of Sapporo for $9.99. I knew I couldn't drink a pitcher but I said might as well. I ended up pouring a pint for the guy sitting at the table next to me.

Service was good and they were friendly. Food tasted great and looked appetizing as well. They had some cool dishes.

It's a good izakaya place. No complaints at all.

I'd totally go back

I'd go back
Submitted Saturday, November 10, 2012 - 8:59pm [Dine in]

What we ordered:

Chicken and prawn tempura udon

Deep fried octopus croquette

Wild Salmon sashimi

BBQ beef tongue

BBQ cod neck

Eel and prawn tempura roll

Big bottle of Sapporo

The bill came up to $50.45 including tax.

Ya it was all pretty good. Service was definitely up there. Fast, friendly and attentive. No complaints at all.

It's all Japanese staffed. I'm pretty sure anyway. I'm Asian myself and i've been to enough chinese and korean owned places to have a good idea. Plus they said so..hahaha

It was a Saturday and we got there around 6 and there was no one and 45 minutes later there were people waiting for a seat.

It's a nice place with nice people and good food. I'll be going back and my cousin said he would too. He's a harsh critic too. The guy will hardly go anywhere except his handful of usuals.

I would put this place in my rotation
Submitted Friday, December 16, 2011 - 8:15pm [Dine in]

Food is good and value is better than most. Never had an issue with them. If I lived closer I would go there probably weekly. Definitely the best or second best on that strip of Hastings. I used to live in the neighborhood before it opened and I've tried all the other places.

Good atmosphere but not sure if food is worth the price
Submitted Friday, December 16, 2011 - 8:10pm [Dine in]

I would say the food is decent and probably over average but it's a bit on the pricey side especially for the neighborhood it's in. I guess the gimmick they have is that it's Japanese owned, they've got some unique kinds of dishes and it's got a nice atmosphere. It's not a place that would be part of my weekly or even monthly rotation though. For me, it's more of a place that I would go to when I want to hang out with friends and have a few drinks. However, this neighborhood is lacking a decent Japanese restaurant so I can see why it does ok.

Tomoya Japanese Restaurant6285 Nelson Ave, Burnaby
Typical Chinese owned Japanese Restaurant
Submitted Friday, December 16, 2011 - 8:02pm [Dine in]

Service is no good cause they're under staffed. They have 2 people working the floor and it's not enough with all the takeout orders they get. They took forever to come take our order and it's was next to impossible to wave someone down when you wanted something cause they're always behind the counter doing something.

Their rolls are decent and they have a lot of unique kinds. The salmon sashimi we ordered was a bit frozen still. I like how they styled the place though. I wouldn't go back myself and I'm not a very fussy guy. Definitely one of the poorer japanese restaurants I've been to and I've been to a lot.

Uncle Willy's Restaurants6411 Nelson Ave, #100, Burnaby
Yes, Uncle Willy's does rock!
Submitted Thursday, July 22, 2010 - 3:11pm [Dine in]

I'm reading other posts about how disgusting the food is or how they use leftovers. Do you really think any restaurant you go to only serves fresh food and that they never microwave anything? Get your head out of the gutter. This is how you should rate Uncle Willy's, price and quality of food for the price just like any restaurant. Uncle Willy's is gem in this city. Their roasted chicken is definitely fresh cause you see them cooking in the rotisserie and it tastes good. Also, I do not think the food is disgusting. I think it's just the mindset some of you have about Uncle Willy's that makes you think the food is not good. Of course some things are questionable. I'm not saying this place has the best tasting food in the city but if you're saying it's gross than you're just spoiled or an aspiring anorexic.

Golden Oscar Cafe & Restaurant3868 Rupert Street, Vancouver
If it was any worse it would be gross
Submitted Saturday, March 20, 2010 - 5:16pm [Dine in]

Although I have always thought this of Oscar's I still keep going every once and a while because some of their dishes there are usually ok and there's not much else in that neighborhood. Most things from the special menus are usually ok but most other dishes are under par. Service is decent for a chinese restaurant.

Dijo's Pizza & Panzerotto2838 Hastings St East, #116, Vancouver
Probably one of the better places in the neighborhood
Submitted Saturday, March 20, 2010 - 5:10pm [Dine in]

I wouldn't say it's fantastic but there is nothing better that I can in a 12 block radius especially pizza by the slice. Definitely 10 times better than that place on Hastings by London Drugs. I can only comment on the pizza by the slice cause I've never had anything else. They have a decent selection usually all the time. The people there are friendly all the time. The only issue I have is that sometimes they have more expensive slices of pizza but will never inform you that it's more expensive than the regular $1.78 slices. One cool thing is the guy will deliver pretty far. I still go there regularly.

Bon's Off Broadway2451 Nanaimo St., Vancouver
I don't think you can complain for $2.95
Submitted Saturday, March 20, 2010 - 5:03pm [Dine in]

I'll first admit that Bon's is not for you if you expect a clean environment. Don't go looking at every nook and cranny cause you're going to find something.

Pros

Price - The $2.95 breakfast is really worth it but all the other food is cheap and most of it decent and tax is all included.

Portions - You won't leave hungry

Coffee - I don't drink coffee but more than a handful of people I know say the coffee is good.

Cons

Sanitation - It's not clean. The tables, seats, walls, napkin dispenser, ummmm everywhere and everything. In and around the winter it will smell usually like bleach and it's humid which makes it even more gross.

Service - It's freaking busy so service isn't so great. They will not serve you water even if you ask for it. It's like an unwritten rule that you get your own water. That's fine, but at least let people know instead of not bringing the water.

Busy - If you go on the weekends during morning and lunch you will have to wait close to half hour and another half hour for you food.

Drinks - Besides coffee their drinks suck. It's not real coke and it's not even good cola. The juices are equally as crappy.

Final Analysis

All the smell and dirt will never stop this place from being busy. $2.95 trumps everything else. The food is very good for the price. The only things that will stop me from going to this place is when it's busy and when I don't feel like being unhealthy.

Pho Nhuan2989 Rupert Street, Vancouver
Possibly the best
Submitted Tuesday, November 10, 2009 - 1:49pm [Dine in]

Let me tell you first off that I have tried many Vietnamese restaurants from all over East Van, Burnaby and Surrey. The broth for their pho is very tasty and not very salty at all. The first thing I do when I get my pho is I taste the soup to see how salty it is. The noodles and everything else in the pho is good too. I have also had the subs here and this is my first choice for subs. They cut the carrots a lot thinner than other places so the taste of it is not so overwhelming. I get the feeling they care about how their food taste because at the end the guy actually asked me, "how was everything?" If you're not too familiar with Vietnamese restaurants or any asian restaurant for that matter, they never ask cause they don't want to know. I've been driving past this place for the last 2 years and never went in cause I'm always skeptical of newer Vietnamese restaurants opening in unusual spots. My only complaint is that it's small and your conversation can be heard by anyone in the restaurant. Definitely glad I decided to try it and you should too.

Great Burgers, good breakfast, service not so good
Submitted Monday, November 24, 2008 - 12:58am [Dine in]

Don't know what made me try this place and not the other restaurants that were there before but I'm glad I did. It's not often a place has homemade burger patties. For $8.50 you get a big burger that is definitely one of the best in town. The hashbrowns they serve have a delightfully unique taste to them. I have had the breakfast as well and it is also above average. However, the service is not great at all. The food takes forever to come and no ketchup was given to us. No apologies for the long wait either. Sometimes I think they play favourites cause I saw one guy that seemed like a regular get his food way before us and he came way after we did. I would definitely go back just because it's hard to find a burger that good.
