Bistrot Bistro1961 West 4th Avenue, Vancouver
Great casual French dining, minor gaffes
Submitted Tuesday, April 28, 2009 - 11:43pm [Dine in]

My wife and I have been there twice in as many weeks. What you get is reasonably-priced food in a fun, casual atmosphere. Some of the naysayers may have been expecting West/Lumiere-style service which clearly this bistro does not provide but given the price difference, I believe it is an acceptable trade-off.

The food is homey, generous and tasty. The wine pairings are reasonable and there are some good finds in the list.

The place is LOUD and everytime the door is opened a draft blows through. The service, as noted earlier, is somewhat spotty but generally well-mannered and apologetic.

Summary: Good value and a great place to bring friends.

Good, but expensive, specialty rolls
Submitted Tuesday, April 28, 2009 - 11:31pm [Dine in]

I will often bring guests here because it is close and the specialty rolls are consistently good. The regular rolls are... well... rather ordinary and I would stay away from them.

The complaints from the other reviews generally have merit. If you come during peak hours, then be prepared to wait as the seating area is quite small. Also, do NOT expect great service... it is hit and miss.

And while I may have gushed about the rolls, they are not cheap.

Still, the meal is usually enjoyable here.

Average Sushi, but Poor Service
Submitted Tuesday, April 28, 2009 - 11:20pm [Dine in]

I have had the opportunity to dine here many times and the reviews seen on this site seem to hold true: the food is solid value but be prepared to accept mediocre to poor service.

On one of the occasions, I asked the waitress if one of the dishes could be modified to accomodate my son's food allergy. I even offered to pay extra for the bother. The waitress took my inquiry to the chef who angrily denied my request. I actually witnessed him yelling at the waitress who then came back, flushed and embarrassed, to explain that she would ask him again once he calmed down (!). (It worked out in the end when he finally acquiesced... )

My six-year old didn't know exactly what was happening but sensed the tension.

The food itself is quite palatable and represents good value. The sushi is far from the best this city has to offer but this place is a fine drop-in for a quick fix if you can overlook the service issues.
