Thierry Chocolaterie Patisserie Cafe1059 Alberni Street, Vancouver
Disappointed....clearly overrated!

First off, this cafe looks somewhat identical to Thomas Haas, I heard that they used the same designer. Quite frankly, I prefer Thomas Haas over this place anyday, but I just wanted to try this place out, since everyone was "raving" about it. So I ordered a hot chocolate, 3 macaroons, chocolate succe, and a lime cake. The hot chocolate was not chocolatey enough, it tasted very watery and powdery...it was not good. The macaroons were very vibrant coloured- almost tooo synthetic, I really wonder if the FDA would approve of the colouring...hmm. Anyways, the macaroons were way too sweet, and they were crunchy ( macaroons are not supposed to be crunchy). I ordered the pistachio- way too sweet, passionfruit- fruity but way too sweet, and the gianduja- the best out of the 3, but still too sweet. The lime cake was very wet tasting, it was unappetizing. The chocolate succe cake was the best thing I bought, and it was decent, nice chocolate flavour. Will I go back- NO, its difficult to find parking, and Alberni is always so busy. Nothing beats Thomas Haas.

This place has the best desserts hands down, in comparison to Thierry's..this place is the best. They always have everything available once they open, like cakes, macaroons, chocolates, etc. The coffee is fantastic, its a very nice blend, its not bitter, and its never burnt. However, they can improve on the service. Most of the servers that work here have a "So what do you want? And now get the hell out" kind of attitude, they are attentive for the most part, but they are never friendly, and they seem annoyed all the time. What I find most strange is that you first place an order for say, a box of 12 macaroons, and then you tell the server that you want to pick your own flavours. You then stand on the side, and wait until a server calls your name. When the server calls your name, you go back to the counter, however, you have to push and shove your way through the counter, because there are always crowds of people just standing there waiting to be served, just to pick your flavours. I really do not understand why the customer cannot just tell the server the flavours that they want when they order. They make it more complicated than it really is.

The yogurt here used to be better, when it wasnt self serve. Now, it tastes very sour and gritty for the original and I also tried the cheesecake-which was came out to be slightly yellow, and tasted synthetic. For one cup, I only squeezed 1/4 of the cup, and it came to be $5 incl. tax. I found that this was very expensive, since, you can get a meal for $6-7 at Aberdeen. I will not go back, it I crave froyo, I will go to Pinkberry's or if I crave gelato, I would go to Vivo Gelato.

Whats the hype all about?

I came here on a Sunday morning, and I ordered take out at 11 am ( the store's opening time)..and I asked the lady over the phone about the wait, and she said that my order would be ready in 20 minutes. So I came in 20 minutes, and I paid her, and then she told me that it was not ready yet, and she was very grouchy about it ( she probably did not want to bother with me because for take-outs she will not receive any tips). So I stood outside, since the restaurant was already filled to capacity, and I waited for 1.5 hours for takeout! At this point, I was really hungry, and so I grabbed the take-out and went home. I ordered a beef roll, pork dumplings, beef with hand pulled noodle stir fry, and pan fried sticky cake. The beef roll was quite tasty, and everything else was really greasy and quite gross. The dumplings were not cooked properly, they are suppose to be potstickers, meaning they should be quite crispy on the bottom. However, these dumplings were very soggy and very doughy, it almost tasted like raw flour. The stir-fry consisted of veggies, 5 slices of beef and 5-10 strands of noodles, and about 4-5 tbsp of oil. The sticky cake was basically deep fried, as there was oil leaking from the takeout box, and the stuffing in the cake consisted of 3 pieces of peanuts, with a very oily/sugary mixture, that tasted really awful. All in all, the food is not too good, and the wait time is crazy, and the servers are really rude.

Yummy gelato

This place has tasty gelato...the chocolate ones are the best! The gelato is rich, creamy, and yet quite light, and its very reasonably priced. The servers here are always friendly and they are willing to let you try as many flavours as you want to taste, without any hesitation. This is by far much tastier than those so-called "hip" fro-yo joints that seem to be popping up everywhere!
