Live Music and great food
Submitted Monday, October 18, 2010 - 6:43pm [Dine in]

This is one of our favourite spots in New West. They have live music at night and the food is great. Servers are friendly and attentive. The menu features a Cajun influence with Jambalaya and several shrimp dishes. Steaks are also a hit. They have sandwiches and burgers too.

It is a small venue and the music is loud so you aren't going to be able to chat over it. Best to go as a couple with the intent of listening to the music while you dine. Prices are in line with other dinner restaurants.

Good Food Cheap
Submitted Monday, October 18, 2010 - 6:28pm [Dine in]

Cafeteria style restaurant in the IKEA store. The food is good and it is cheap. Home cooking scandinavian style. Meatballs and gravy, chicken etc. . The shrimp salad plate is nice. There is soup and desserts plus beer and wine. It is always busy and sort of noisy but you can have a full dinner with coffee and dessert for $8. They also serve breakfast if you are an early bird.

Jolly's Indian Bistro2928 W 4th, Vancouver
Tempest in a Teapot
Submitted Saturday, October 9, 2010 - 9:56am [Dine in]

Note They have moved up a block. The address is 2928 W.4th.

Cute Indian restaurant in Kits. An Arabian nights decor. We had a bit of a wait for a table so we sat at the bar. There was no bartender, but the waitress gave us water and an appetizer of chick peas on the house, which was nice. No one asked us if we would like a drink. I thought that's where the profit is for most restaurants. Now when half of every couple is not drinking because they're driving you'd think you would ask the others in the party if they would like one. Customers won't demand a drink -- it's not classy. So we drank our water and waited for our table.

Finally seated, the menu is not extensive and some basic Indian dishes are missing such as Beef Vindaloo and Tandoori chicken. They have a Tandoori oven because they make great naan bread. So throw a few chickens in there guys.

We ordered the Lamb Rogenjosh and the Lamb Biryani. Both were very good. Portions larger than expected.
Served with Basmati rice, naan bread and Grandma's salad. You know the one, lettuce, tomato, cucumber with a vinegar and sugar dressing. Odd but not unpleasant.

Then came the nonsense with the tea. I ordered a chai tea. Hubby did not want tea. I am expecting a cup of tea. The waitress brings me a cup and a big pot of chai tea. There is way more tea than I can possibly drink. So now hubby will have a cup and I request another cup from the waitress. She then tells me OK but they will now charge me for TWO chai teas. I don't get it. They have already charged me for the pot of tea. It is not going to be served to anyone else in the restaurant. If I don't drink it, it will be thrown out. But if I now share it you are going to charge me double. What if there were four of us and I chose to share my pot of tea would you charge me four times. If we ordered a dessert to share would you charge me twice for one dessert. Am I being petty about this?

We didn't feel like having an argument and spoiling the evening so we shared and paid for two teas, but this sort of thing is death to a restaurant. There are a lot of restaurants in Vancouver, and with the recession and the HST increasing prices people are choosy about where they go. The food was an A but because of the Tea nonsense we probably won't go back.

Good Mom & Pop Sushi Place
Submitted Friday, October 8, 2010 - 6:26pm [Dine in]

This is a small local Sushi Place. The food is good and the prices are reasonable. When we were there however across from us was Ms. Obnoxious. Barking at the staff " will someone take our order "when are we going to be served?" Where's our food? etc. Look around when you come in - there is one person waiting on tables -- if you want fast service go somewhere else.

This is a mom and pop restaurant supported by the locals who dine there regularly. Don't be in a hurry -- read the paper and relax. Have a Japanese beer. When the food comes you will enjoy it. Try the shrimp tempura.

The food is fresh and tasty. The restaurant is clean and the booths are cute and cosy.

For a Special Dinner -- This is the place to go!
Submitted Friday, October 1, 2010 - 5:01pm [Dine in]

This is a small, beautiful and elegant restaurant. Expensive but for a special dinner it is worth it. The food is excellent and the menu always has something different. At our table we had the tomato soup and endive salad to start. Then the risotto, the chicken breast, the beef tenderloin, and the pork belly. Everyone was happy with their meal.

Meals are beautifully presented. Dessert is rich so you might want to share one between two diners.
Staff is attentive and friendly, and yes you can ask for the leftovers to be packed up to take home.

If you get Migraines or Headaches stay away
Submitted Thursday, September 30, 2010 - 10:07am [Dine in]

Lots of MSG used which triggers migraines and headaches. If that is not a concern for you then the food is good and there is a large selection. Portions are large. The small Pho would be a large one elsewhere.

Tempura was fried very crispy, but we enjoyed it. Prices are reasonable. They also do breakfast all day, so I would go back and try breakfast. The SPCA thrift store is next door, so you could have breakfast and then hunt for treasures.

Service was friendly and quick. Ambiance is Asian diner and is bright clean and comfortable. They have free papers you can read if you're eating alone. There seem to be many people who have made it their breakfast, or lunch spot. Relax with the paper and have breakfast.

Maybe you should just go for Tea
Submitted Wednesday, September 29, 2010 - 11:08am [Dine in]

Maybe you should just go for Tea. We went for Chinese food and it was disappointing. It looks like a hole-in-the-wall restaurant, but it is actually quite big in the back. The restaurant is clean and comfortable, but no real ambiance.

The food is OK, and you get large portions, but it all seems to have been made well ahead and then reheated. Sauces become glutinous. We had the sweet and sour chicken and the beef in black bean sauce. Lots for two and leftovers to take home, but unremarkable taste.

Service is practically non-existent. The owner was watching TV and we would call him over when we were ready to order, needed anything, ready to pay etc. He was very pleasant and we certainly weren't rushed, but it's not the best way to run a restaurant. Prices are reasonable.

I'd go again, but not for dinner. Tea with a friend and a snack might be better.

Great Sunday Breakfast spot
Submitted Monday, September 27, 2010 - 12:11pm [Dine in]

Fun whole-in-the-wall cafe. Just down from Douglas college and across from the Skytrain. Cheap and the food is good. Great for a Sunday breakfast. They do Eggs Benedict in several variations on the weekend.

Also home made soups, salads, panninis and desserts. Everything is good, but the cafe is small so go as a single or a couple, then take a walk on the waterfront afterwards.

Upscale Dining in Burnaby
Submitted Saturday, September 25, 2010 - 8:24am [Dine in]

Yes it is located in a shopping mall, but this is a very upscale restaurant. Sit outside on the patio. They have heaters so you are comfortable, never cold.

The food is excellent. It is expensive, but you feel the quality of the food is worth it. The staff is pleasant and they don't rush you.

We have been several times and the food is always good. Try the steaks or the planked salmon, The Ahi Tuna appetizer is beautiful.

Too Cold to Stay
Submitted Friday, November 27, 2009 - 10:48pm [Dine in]

We went planning to enjoy Chinese Food. The Restaurant was incredibly cold. Most of the Diners had their coats on. It was also incredibly bright like a cafeteria. They are trying to cut costs by turning off the heat, or turn the tables by not encouraging diners to linger. Either way we weren't impressed and opted to leave and go across the street to the Spaghetti Factory which was warm and inviting.

The Table was ours
Submitted Friday, November 27, 2009 - 8:36pm [Dine in]

We enjoyed a great family dinner. Service was friendly and the food good. The Osso Bucco was expecially good. The nicest thing was that we were not rushed. There was no feeling that we had to eat and leave. The Table was ours for the evening. So we relaxed. Enjoyed appys, entres, dessert, wine, the works. An excellent place for a family get together.

Great local Greek Bistro
Submitted Monday, December 17, 2007 - 12:00am [Dine in]

This is a great local casual Greek restaurant. Stick with the specials and the Greek signature dishes and you can't go wrong. The Chicken liver appetizer is great. Service is friendly, but if you want something remind them, or they bring you the bill without asking if you want dessert, stuff like that -- nothing major. Food is good, prices okay.

Free parking at the back is a plus
Submitted Thursday, December 13, 2007 - 3:44pm [Dine in]

Like the other reviews the food is ok,largish portions. So you will have some to take home. The specials are Greek or Italian. We stuck with Italian and the meals were good.
The bonus is that they have free parking at the back which is a rarity downtown and makes up for a lot of things.

Service was friendly. I'd go again.

Hole in the wall but good Thai food
Submitted Saturday, December 8, 2007 - 10:00pm [Dine in]

Tiny hole in the wall restaurant. The food is good. The spicy food is very spicy so order carefully.
It can be a little cold when the door opens so try to sit away from the draft. Prices are reasonable. The Thai food is much better than far more upscale Thai restaurants. So if you are a fan of Thai food this is a good restaurant to add to your favourites.

Great fresh all-you-can eat Japanese food
Submitted Wednesday, December 5, 2007 - 5:03pm [Dine in]

Go for the lunch all-you-can-eat special. They offer it every day. Food is fresh. Order everything you want on the first sheet as they don't bring you another one. You usually get everything you order, but sometimes you have to remind them about an item. sometimes you get a surprise as they drop a dish on your table meant for another. Doesn't matter it is all good.

Funky little Main street restaurant
Submitted Friday, November 30, 2007 - 4:39pm [Dine in]

Funky little main street restaurant decorated in junk yard finds. Always entertaining to look around the room. Soup and Sandwich selection is good. I enjoyed the mulligatawny soup and portobello mushroom sandwich, but my friend found the food bland.

Prices are reasonable and the staff is super friendly. On a cold day it can be cold as the door opens directly into the little cafe -- lots of people eating with their coats on.

Small restaurant with a cosy atmosphere, but you come here for the food. The sushi is always fresh and tastes great. The Dinner boxes are large and flavourful. They also have take-out. Enjoy your Sushi with a Japanes beer.
The chefs are out front and you can see them make your Sushi.
Never disappointed.

Beautiful Food

I love O Thai. The food is wonderful and beautifully presented.
They've vastly improved the ambiance with the addition of table cloths.
Some of the dishes are very spicy so if you don't like it spicy quiz your server before ordering.
