One thing that stood out was the ample use of fresh herbs and spices in their dishes. Food was extremely tasty, unlike other thai restaurants where the sauces tasted pre-made and bland.
I agree with other reviewers that the portions are on the small side. The prices of the appetizers and soup were also ridiculously expensive; a small cup of soup costs around 7 dollars. But if you stick to the main dishes like the deep-fried ling cod which was 12 dollars, I think the prices are very reasonable.
Overall I think this is a decent place for Thai food.
The food is good. They serve good tuna steaks. The unagi doriya is also quite unique. The karaage was good too. I liked how they used ponzu and garlic as the dressing for the karaage, it was less oily compared to mayo based sauces. The service is excellent like restaurants back in Japan. Servers kneel down to take orders so you don't have to strain your neck looking up to make the order.
The restaurant is a bit pricey compared to other izakayas like Guu though. Most Tapas costs around 9 dollars each. Also, I ordered a $4.50 umeshuu but it came in a ridiculously small glass that can be finished in about 5 sips.
Their nigiri sushi's proportion is quite good, large slice of fish on top of a mouth bit full of sushi rice. The fish on top of the sushi rice is not overly thick so you don't need to dip it into so much soy sauce. Overall, flavor is well distributed. The sushi rice could be stickier though and it lacks the vinegar taste.
The restaurant is way too busy, so the service is fairly rushed and almost non-existent. Just expect to get your food.
The ambiance is okay, restaurant feels fairly clean and bright.
Overall, the restaurant is a good place to get cheap decent sushi. And like what other reviewers recommended, I think it's probably better to just order take-out from there.
After having waited for a long time, my girlfriend and I were finally seated to a 2 persons table. However, just upon sitting for a few minutes, the waitress just told us to move to another table. Seeing that it was simply another 2 persons table I asked her for an explanation why we had to move, out of curiosity. To my surprise, rather than giving me a polite explanation, she gave me this mean stare as if saying how dare I disobeyed her request to move. It was extremely rude, and I didn't feel like eating afterwards. Not going to visit Toshi again.
