Nice place, nice food, they don't know how their own promotions and made us wait over 30 minutes to pick up our food.
Submitted Sunday, March 9, 2014 - 10:55pm [Take-out]

So, this was a third time going to this restaurant. The first two times were dine in. It really is a nice looking restaurant, but service is usually very slow so we weren't sure if we would be returning for dine in. We signed up for their email list thing anyways.

My girlfriend received a Happy Birthday email with a $25 offer (*Come join us at Cotto and purchase an Entree at regular price and enjoy your second Entree, of equal or lesser value, with our compliments. (up to $25 value) So, I order a bunch of food and we go in to pick it up thinking that it would be fine to show it on my phone. The email didn't say anywhere that we would need to print it out.

So, we show up and the first waitress asks to see the email. She takes my phone to show the manager way over on the other side of the room then goes around asking some other staff. Then says that I have to forward the email to them so that they can print it out. So I email them... wait 10 minutes. They ask for another email... I send it again... and another after 5 minutes.

My girlfriend was getting very irritated as she was hungry and waiting for over 30 minutes just to use this coupon promotion. My girlfriend said to the waitress that we shouldn't have to wait this long just to use their promotion. The waitress just made up an excuse, stating that it wasn't her fault because she didn't make the promotion rather than just apologizing.

Our food was good, but older/colder from waiting and waiting.

SHORT STORY: It was a nice promotion, but it was so poorly handled. We had to over 30 minutes to get the staff to talk to each other and figure out how to use their own promotion and forward them their own email multiple times so that we could pay for the food with the discount. All that waiting just made our food 30+ minutes older/colder.

I would really like to love this restaurant because it's so close to where we live, it's a cool looking place to hang out, and the foods not bad either, but the service is just so disorganized that it hurts my brain.

I really don't want to go back there.

Pear Tree, The4120 Hastings Street, Burnaby
Just good.
Submitted Saturday, April 20, 2013 - 2:41pm [Dine in]

The Pear Tree is a nice little place with very limited seating. It took a few calls to get a reservation that worked out with our schedule. Our friends gave us a gift certificate a couple of years ago and we finally decided to use it.

One thing that made me feel uncomfortable was when we first entered and were asked if we had reservations, as if they expected us to say no. It may have been just me, but I didn't feel that welcomed into their business.

The food was delicious, but not amazing. We had the lamb and fish. The portions were that of which you would generally expect in a fine dining restaurant. (If you know what I mean.) The waiter did was friendly and attentive.

If you do decided to have dessert, I would recommend the creme brulee. It was large enough to feed two, which was good since we shared it. Well done on the dessert.

Will I be returning, considering how I live right across the alleyway? Probably not, the food was not amazing enough to make me crave for more. But it was worth the experience just to see what all of the hype was about. Hype indeed.

Take out orders always wrong.

This is the third time I ordered congee from this restaurant and they always seem to get it wrong. Two times my sliced beef turns out to be pork liver. Another time it turns out to be fish. Since I ordered beef I should get what I pay for. The congee is done well, but it's really unfortunate that they keep getting it wrong since they're so close to home. If there is a next time I'm going to open the bag and container right infront of the cashier and poke around just to make sure they got my order right. Either that or not go again. Maybe you should do that, too. I say poor value and mediocre service because you're probably not going to get what you ordered.

Sawasdee Thai Restaurant4250 Main St, Vancouver
There surely is a reason why this place is so busy.
Submitted Sunday, May 6, 2012 - 10:52am [Dine in]

My girlfriend and I decided to go for Thai food and decided on Sawasdee, because it had some solid reviews. We called in at 7:00 pm for a 7:30 reservation for 2 people and got it! I was really glad I called in, because the place was pretty packed. All of the servers were very nice and we were promptly seated even though it was so busy. I think it's authentically run by Thai people, which is always a plus.

We ordered the fried prawn cakes for our appetizer. They were deep fried to a golden brown with tangy cucumber sauce on the side. I liked it.

For our main course we ordered the tamarind pad thai and roast duck curry (hot spicy) with rice. The pad thai was better than others, but not the best that I've had - still enjoyable nevertheless. The roast duck curry really did come out spicy as we ordered it. I loved it. It's always a good sign when the restaurant lets you choose how spicy you want your curry.

For dessert we ordered the deep fried banana with one scoop of mango ice cream. It was okay.

Our water glasses were filled regularly and there were many servers walking around to help us out.
With 15% tip the bill ended up being $50.

I would come here again.

Food was okay.
Submitted Sunday, January 29, 2012 - 6:54pm [Dine in]

We ordered one of the laksa noodle soups, pad thai, and Tropika special fried rice. The food came fast in under 10 minutes at 12:00pm on a Sunday. The fried rice was supposed to come with pineapple, but didn't so we asked the nice waiter and he sent it back. I found the service to be very good since our water glasses were never empty and there was always a waiter to help us out. The food was just okay, the Laksa lacked spice and the peas and carrots in my fried rice looked very akin to that of the frozen grocery store variety. Pineapples were shaped like they were probably out of a can. Funny how I never appreciated the nicer south-east asian restaurants I've been to who use fresh pineapples until today. Used the entertainment book coupon. I don't think this place has good value without the coupon when I can get fresh pineapple fried rice in a pineapple for about the same price at my usual spot.

Not bad, not good either.
Submitted Saturday, June 19, 2010 - 7:06pm [Dine in]

My girlfriend and I have driven by here many times and after reading many positive reviews we decided to give it a shot. After reading the menu, we decided on lamb dosa and vindaloo and it came out pretty fast too. However, our biggest disappointment was that there really was no taste to it! We weren't asked for a preferred level of spice, so I am to assume they feed this to everyone. I'm not Indian, but I have eaten at a fair amount of restaurants to feel let down with tasteless Indian food. The dosa's "crepe" portion had a lovely texture and the food was filling enough. Sadly, we won't be back unless we're starved into the late hours of the night with no where else to eat.
