This is one of my favorite Martini spots! Blue Saphire Gin, a spritz of Vermouth and lots of olives - shaken!! Their Martinis just taste better??? I think the ambience adds a lot too and the Waiters are very mature and attentive! The history, the luxury, the jazz music and tasty nibbles makes for a very classy and memorable experience...
In all honesty it has been several years since eating there. I was downtown with my young sons and a one of their friends and we were all hungry so decided to pop in for a snack, it looked quite busy and popular. It became quite clear that the server looked upon us as a "waste of her time". We placed a small order for food and no alcohol, she snubbed me and only went through the motions of serving us. I am sure she thought that we were likely tourists and we would never be back anyway so why worry! It is not just tourists that eat downtown during the summer but locals too, so wake-up and smell the "roses"! It is disappointing to read in the last review that the owner seemed far too casual about his customer's unsatisfactory experience...
I know that there is a lot of hype about this spot. So, having heard all the hype decided to go and give it a try. Naturally I was expecting something well beyond the norm...it was good soft serve ice cream, but it didn't knock my socks off!
I think Dairy Queen sells a good cone, as does McDonald's for half the fat and half the price!
This is a lovely waterfront restaurant with two sides! A fine dining restaurant side and a casual bar side with bar games and a pool table. Both sides offer a sun-drenched patio. What a view! For those who like to look at sail boats you can do just that while you dine. The service is very attentive and personal, with one server who loves to entertain her tables! The food is delicious and served up to your liking, they want to make you happy! It's not a big spot, so offers an intimate relaxing comfortable atmosphere. Dress up or down, no pretention there!
For anyone who has visited Butchart Gardens, they know how absolutely lovey it is there! Christmas time is a special time to go, especially with family. A wonderful way to spend the evening is to dine first and then take a stroll around the gardens in the crisp night air afterwards. From my understanding the Dining Room is operated seasonally, over the summer, but re-opens for a short time over Christmas. Now, the only grievance I have is that you have to pay the garden admission price before going to dinner! If you don't have an annual pass and out of town visitors wouldn't, it makes for a VERY expensive dinner when you add the price of admission to the price of their expensive dinner entrees!
I think that if you are dining, the price of your admission ticket should be deducted from your dinner bill at the time of payment. It seems a bit excessive to me to double dip!
Okay, I agree, it seems crazy to spend that much money for little crusts of bread with some deviled egg, or a bite size tart with a hint of ham...let's face it folks, it's all about location, location, location, have you checked out the view from the Empress Room?! Of course it's a tourist trap and of course we are all paying way too much for the morsels of finger food...but you are not paying for the food but for the experience of having tea at one of our oldest landmarks! It costs a pretty penny I'm sure to keep that "old gal" The Empress, well groomed for all to enjoy...that's what you are paying for, to help keep her looking pretty!
I haven't been in a long. long time as a result of poor service. I sent the owners my concerns via their website but I guess I wasn't important enough to get a response back. For me, the food can be wonderful, but if the service is poor, then I don't go back!
A quaint little spot with not enough tables. Situated in Oak Bay, I think it is an old store turned restaurant. Local art on the walls.
Fresh, well made, very tasty, good size portions, reasonably priced.
Someone is working hard in that kitchen!
Yes, I agree with the previous reviews, this restaurant is living off of it's reputation as a "must see tourist stop"! In it's day, it was probably quite unique but now it's worn out and needs help! Some new wall paper, table cloths, carpet, bathrooms and ditch the dolls!
I think you have to be over 60 to work there, but I have to say the gals are cute and very friendly! You can't get a better scone with devonshire creme and homemade jam!
MY last experience was disappointing! I have been a few times before and it was acceptable but not memorable.
I am not too sure how this restaurant would do if not part of the whole Mattick's Farm experience. The food in my opinion is over-priced for what you get and the freshnes on some products is questionable. The service is average and staff seem to socialize a bit too much and should be more attentive. The decor needs freshening up. I likely will not go back.
This is a restaurant that is coming into it's own. The staff is better than average, warm and friendly and really hustle! They do their best to make your visit a good one! It's a big restaurant with loads of room for large groups and has a great Sports Bar with three big screen TV's. Daily specials, larger than most pizzas (12 slices in a large) Huge selection on the menu, something for everyone! All ages feel welcome. The people there care! Good food, good times and good prices.
