I went there with a group of 7 and was very impressed with the room, the piano and singing really set a nice mood. The service staff seemed very professional although I found my server to be a touch snooty. Being in a large group I got to try a few of the dishes most of which I was not impressed with. To start we got a amuse bouche of wild muchroom soup, it wasnt bad although tasted floury like the roux wasnt cooked out enough. For an appetizer I had the crab croquette, not bad. Lobster bisque was not overly flavourful and the pink grapefruit was interesting although im still not sure I liked it. My entree was the baha scallops with risotto, the risotto was good but the scallops were terrible, underseasoned and not cooked all that well, for the first time ever I had my waiter go back to the kitchen and ask for salt. I could see how some people would enjoy the food but for me I found no value in this restaurant knowing we have so many more restauants in this city that provide better food cheaper and with bigger portions.
Just tried out this place for the first time and it was very good. The food was different. The nachos were not very cheesy but instead loaded with sour cream, beans and guacamole. The enchiladas were served in a very watery sauce but it was actually very flavourful. The salsas at the salsa bar were excellent and the beef was some of the best taco beef I have had.
My girlfriend and I went to parkside and were not overly impressed. As we entered we were greeted promptly by a host and he asked if we would like to sit on the patio, I said no as it was getting cold out and my girlfriend was already cold, he sat us beside the door to the patio. It took our waitress awhile to get to us but when she did she was well educated about the wines and menu . We each ordered two starters and a main. The dishes were pretty good but i found them to be drastically underseasoned, and I heard another diner ask for salt. The worst part of our meal was my girlfriends main course she got a rissoto because she is a vegtarian they did little to accomodate to her like throwing some nicely cooked veggies on top they just sent out a rissoto which was very very underdone. Aside from the negative we probably just got a bad night or something, the food was all right but thers better places for me.
I have been going to the pear tree for a few years now and it is definately my favourite resto in the lower mainland. The food is always perfect, always perfectly seasoned ,best rissottos, best creme brulee ever. My service has never been anything but perfect.
In reference to wine nut I think the reason Stephanie may have took offense to your question is probably because as far as I know she is a sommelier if not she is well educated about wine. I myself am a chef and would think it would be odd for a table to ask to see me about wine as opposed to their server.
I frequently go to the gillnetter for brunch on sundays which is pretty damn good, and caesars are on special. Music trivia on wednesdays can be fun and the food is usually pretty good for a pub. My only complaint is that prices can be a bit high for a pub.
I go to Rosa's quite regularly and I think the pasta is fantastic. I am a chef myself and have been in the industry for a while. Although the food is amazing the service aspect has been lacking for me every time and the last time She was flat out rude. Service is slow and un attentive and the care of small details eg. cutlery sets are placed carelessly on the tables is just not there. I'll still go back but just for the food.
