Good restaurant
Submitted Thursday, August 2, 2007 - 1:14am [Dine in]

Dined here with 12 people before fireworks.
Ordered the dozen oysters; delicious, fresh and great condiments included. Sumarai sushi was a bit sweet for my tastebuds (sauce) but very tasty. Good amount of seafood in the sushi and good portions. Shared a pitcher of pale ale beer for $12.00 (tax/tip included). Pint of beer was $3.33 without tax. Good selection of dishes. All diners were very satisfied with their meal and full after eating. I will diner here again.

Could have been better
Submitted Monday, July 23, 2007 - 5:43pm [Dine in]

Dined here with friends and our kids.
Hostess (?) walked pass us about 3 times until I flagged a disgrunted server. I told him we'd like to have a table, he said "okay," and walked away. He didn't ask for how many people, and he didn't tell any instructions. I stood there until I had to flag him again, and he pointed at a table for 4 people eventhough I told him 4 adults and two kids.
Usually I would have walked away from the restaurant but my kids were hungry. So on our own we found another table and had to grab an extra chair.
We had another waiter serve us and he was decent. No water was offered though. But at least he didn't just grunt at us.
I ordered the rotini with artichokes, and smoked salmon and my husband ordered spaghetti with seafood. Food was good, but we were quite put off by the service.
BTW, we weren't given a choice to order appys. By the time we ordered our main meal the menus were whisked away.
Will not dine here again.

Great family owned restaurant
Submitted Monday, July 16, 2007 - 4:46pm [Dine in]

I dined here with 4 girlfriends 2 wks ago. One of my gfs never been here so I had to introduce her to the restaurant.
Ordered the whole talapia, eggplant dish and a noodle dish (need to remember the dishes names). And plain rice dish for 4 people. We had one beer each.
Food was very tasty and loved the spices (medium spice was enough for my tastebuds and my gf doesn't enjoy spicy meals). We thought the meals were delicious, and we particularly loved the eggplants. Talapia was crispier than I liked, but with the spicy sauce it made up for it.
Meals was reasonably priced almost $80 with beer each and taxes.
Added the tip and we decided to dine here again in a few wks.

Comfortable Ambience and delicious food
Submitted Monday, July 16, 2007 - 4:36pm [Dine in]

Group of 20 dined in their new location (Granville Island entrance).
Dined in their Afghani room (sat on cushions and dined on low tables). Decor was inviting, and comfortable. Our waiter was friendly and prompt.
I ordered the lamb shoulder meal and everything was delicious.
Lamb was succulent and delicious. Huge portions. The men in our party could not finish their meals because they were full.
Highly recommend this restaurant and will go again to dine on their patio.

Very kid friendly and the food is tasty too
Submitted Monday, April 30, 2007 - 12:07am [Dine in]

Spent the day at the beach with out two toddlers.
It was too late to go home and make dinner, so we checked this place out (read it on a parent magazine or something).
Kids enjoyed the playarea, very cute chef outfits and kid friendly toys. Odered food from the kid's menu and kids ate everything. Also odered their large pizza, it was very tasty. My kids also enjoyed the pizza, and their brownie, ice cream desert.
The bill was a pricey $80 for 2 adults, two tots, 2 desert, 2 beers and coctails.
The ambience was nice, and my kid had a great time. And were able to play on their own while their parents ate, and had some adult conversation.
Good service as well.

Expected More
Submitted Sunday, April 29, 2007 - 11:44pm [Dine in]

Dined here with 5 friends.
Read the reviews and from what I read I expected more than what I received.
My water glass had something on the outside, told ther server and she quickly apologized and changed my glass. We tried to order a bottle of Merlot; server stated they didn't have it, sold out during brunch. So ordered another wine bottle.
Bill came was $60 per person with taxes, drinks and 3 desert.
I ordered the tuna spring roll; it was tasty, but didn't care much for the dip. The dip decorated the plate and a small spinach salad was on the side. It was mediocre. For entree, I ordered the duck dish. Again tasty but it wasn't stellar. None of my guests raved about the food, but we were enjoyed the company.
One of my friends asked to have the door blinds shut as the sun was shining directly on her face; the server stated it was broken and they could not.
Overall, the restaurant wasn't busy, our server was attentive but I don't think I'll dine here again.
Maybe their brunch is better.

dad's rating
Submitted Wednesday, April 25, 2007 - 8:18pm [Dine in]

So I said I'd rate again when my father (who only eats out for Chinese) tried this restaurant. We went 2 wks ago. He loved the food. He stated the ribs were not tough, loved the tripe, rice and everything else. He said he was full after our meal (rare).
He did state they can go a little faster (my dad eats a lot when he dines dim sum).
He wants to know when we'll go again.

Submitted Friday, April 20, 2007 - 11:08am [Dine in]

Dined here with a friend from out of town.
The food was tasty, but on the pricey side.
We ordered the wonton appys and prawns. Quite tasty.
It's more of a fusion restaurant.
Service; our server was very friendly.
Hostess was a snob, told us she didn't have a booth available, then gave another group of girls a booth after us. Maybe next time, I'll dress up a bit more, wear more makeup and make sure I looked "hip."
And I agree with their decor was too much, looks like they were trying too hard.

Good food
Submitted Saturday, April 14, 2007 - 1:46am [Dine in]

The restaurant was able to accomodate our group, approximately 20 people.
Service was good.
I was surprised to find out that the main course did not include rice and naan with the meal.
Basically if you order a meat or vegetarian dish, you still had to order rice and naan bread to accompany your meal. Unless that's what you want, I prefer to eat rice with my Indian meal.
Otherwise, my lamb masala was delicious. The lamb was very tender, and the portion was good. I had a glass of wine with my meal and the bill was reasonable. And the rest of the guests enjoyed their meal. There was one guests who did not enjoy their bbq chicken, stated it wasn't tender.
But, I would go dine here again.

I always like their lamb
Submitted Sunday, April 8, 2007 - 5:13pm [Dine in]

Of course the lineup for Vij's was more than 15minutes, and one of my girlfriends was pregnant (she couldn't wait).
We tried Rangoli (next door to Vij and owned by the same person), and loved the place.
One girlfriend tried a chicken dish, the other the paneer main dish and I ordered lamb. Very tasty and my lamb was succulent.
I also enjoyed our pakora appys and the mango/pineapple lassi was delicious. I ended my meal with chai, and it was a great ending to a great meal. Next time I will order a desert.

The price was very reasonable, service very good and ambience was casual, and friendly. A good place to hang out with friends.

Where did my server go?
Submitted Monday, April 2, 2007 - 11:15pm [Dine in]

Once in awhile I like to eat alone.
I thought I'd try this restaurant since it was highly recommended.
Sure it was a busy night and I didn't mind the wait.
I placed my name on their list and headed out to a jewellery shop. I didn't mind the wait.
The service was awful. The hostess was rude and condescending.
I came back after 15minutes when told to and the hostess ignored me (and a couple who waited). I finally had to raise my voice to be heard. When I was finally seated, I was not asked if I wanted a drink. I had to remind the server that I was not given a drinks menu when I asked upon seating.
Otherwise, my dinner was delicious and the chocolate mousse cake was superb. Great wine selection and good for people watching.
Unfortunately the service was very poor.

Submitted Monday, April 2, 2007 - 11:09pm [Dine in]

I like the ambience, good place to chill out and enjoy my drink.
Portions are okay, and drink selection is good.
Last time I went, the server forgot or didn't hear my gfs order so gf didn't eat a main meal. Good thing we like to share and appys were good. Gf forgot about the mistake after a few martinis.
They could improve their desert choices though.
We tried some weird desest dish, and that was the first time I didn't finish a desert.

Submitted Monday, April 2, 2007 - 11:03pm [Dine in]

This is the place we order from on a Friday night (usually husbands turn to cook).
The food is tasty, nothing mind blowing.
This is the first restaurant my son finally tried prawn tempura and he wants it every time we order Japanese cuisine.
I like their lunch bentos, and their portions.
A bit crowded when you dine in though, but the service is good.
Delivery is fast.

It's a tradition
Submitted Monday, April 2, 2007 - 10:55pm [Dine in]

Every time my inlaws visit from out of town, they buy patries from here. My husband said his grandmother used to take him and his brother to Bon Ton every Sunday (?) for tea/desert when they were young. And now it's becoming a tradition for our family to have their pastries when my inlaws visit us.
I don't mind at all.
Did I mention my husband was a pie guy?
Only time he'll eat more pastries than I do, okay maybe not.

Great cakes.
Submitted Monday, April 2, 2007 - 10:50pm [Dine in]

They made my wedidng cake and the cake was fabulous!
This was the only place (they let you take cake samples home) that my husband actually liked the cake flavors (he ate all the samples). He's a pie guy.
Our guests loved the cake, I had 3 layers, and 3 different flavors.
Ron was very friendly and accomodating. I changed my mind about 2 times before finally making a final decision on flavors.
The price was reasonable, compared to others who wanted to charge me $200 more.

Since they did a great job on my wedding cake, I've purchased my children's bday cakes from them since.

The store ambience is simple, but who cares? You're buying pastries/cakes.

Submitted Monday, April 2, 2007 - 10:43pm [Dine in]

My gf brought me here a few days ago and I thought she needed to pick up groceries. I didn't know you could eat here as well.
But what a nice eatery.

Try the beef dishes, and there was this chicken dish wrapped in banana leaf. Delicious. Good portions with rice. Everything I tried (and I tried everything) was delicious. The owner/chef (?), his pictures were on the wall, so I assume he was the owner/chef was friendly. Good service and friendly. Very casual.

I'll come again.

Great mohitos and fish dishes
Submitted Monday, April 2, 2007 - 10:24pm [Dine in]

I don't know any other Caribbean restaurant that serves tasty mohitos. Any suggestions?
The fish dishes are excellent and good portions.
The service was fine, I never had any problems.
I also like the ambience, eclectic and unique.

Submitted Monday, April 2, 2007 - 10:20pm [Dine in]

It's been awhile since I've been here (I think it was 4 yrs ago, before I became a mom and had no time to go out). LOL
But it was an excellent restaurant, and from what I heard Vij's has not lost its touch.
My husband and I lived a few blocks away so we dined here often when we lived close by.
I will try it out again when we can get a babysitter.

I remember the lamb dishes melted in your mouth.
And desert was delicious.
Good service too.
