Keg Steakhouse & Bar, The800 Columbia Street, New Westminster
Historic location; disappointing experience
Submitted Monday, June 22, 2009 - 2:34pm [Dine in]

We just moved to New West and decided to try out the Keg at the Quay.

As a background, we have eaten regularly at the Keg's other locations in Downtown Vancouver, and also our recent new favourite, the Willingdon location, and have, in general, found that the food, service and ambience are good value for the price.

Not here, unfortunately. Because -

1. Food was so so. Both my sirloin and husband's prime rib were blatantly overdone with no apology or explanation from the wait staff. Green salad was limp and tired; the escagot starter was ok, but I've had much livelier food from a microwave dinner box. Overall, no up to Keg standard.

2. Service was spotty: our original waitress disappeared halfway only to reappear at the end to present the bill, with no explanation to hand-off to the other waiter (who was great, btw).

3. Ambience: zero. The exterior brick wall and old-style "the Station" motif implies updated old-style chic", but the interior did not match this expectation. The decor was out-dated (visualize: ski-lodge decor of the 80's), the walls were scruffy, and the overhead exposed HVAC ducts were obviously dusty. Throughout dinner I was preoccupied with the amount of dust and stuff falling into my food, rather than being relaxed and enjoying dinner.

Will not go back again; and will tell friends & fam to spend their money and time somewhere else.
