Fulin Hot Pot Restaurant3025 Lougheed Hwy, #780, Coquitlam
Doing a fantastic job.
Submitted Wednesday, September 10, 2008 - 7:34pm [Dine in]

Similar to the reviewer below me, my fiancé and I stumbled across Fulin by accident one evening while in the area. What a fantastic little restaurant! The owners are from China and they are going for a Korean style food which they seem to accomplish well. I was very impressed with the overall value and quality of the food. The produce is incredibly fresh and crispy. We had the sukiyaki both times we were there. The sukiyaki selection is quite good and for $30 we both ate (all you can eat) and had tea. The restaurant itself is spotless and well decorated. As far as service, they are doing a solid job. The owner is quick on her feet, very accommodating, friendly and happy to have your business. At one point I accidentally spilt hot tea and the owner could not do enough for us, she was so great. The younger staff are learning, a little slower, but have the right attitude, which is what really counts. We will absolutely go back to Fulin and tell our family and friends to go too.

Gillnetter Pub, The1864 Argue St, Port Coquitlam
Terrible
Submitted Tuesday, September 9, 2008 - 7:22pm [Dine in]

I went to the Gillnetter pub on the recommendation of a friend for Sunday brunch. What a mistake. I have never experienced such rude service and disgusting food. I arrived close to noon to find empty food warmers and cold, mushy, overcooked “food.” It was very obvious that the “cook” making the omelets didn’t want to be there. What wasn’t mushy or stale was still frozen inside from the recent thaw it underwent for this brunch. There were maybe two-three items that we edible. After picking through my plate I decided to complain. It seemed the server was ready for a fight. She stood at my table and rudely argued with me for 5 minutes. She was not at all concerned with the scene she was making or what her customers thought. Finally after the server’s temper-tantrum was over she waived the bill in my face. At that point I left. I suppose you “get what you pay for” when it comes to food, but this place isn’t worth a dime. Other than that, yes it has a great view of the river and a nice patio so I'm giving it a 3 for ambiance.

Rehanah's Roti & Trinidadian2518 St. Johns St, Port Moody
The ultimate Rotis
Submitted Wednesday, August 27, 2008 - 1:57pm [Dine in]

Rehanah makes some outstanding Rotis. The meats are top quality and the curry is so spicy and flavourful. Very authentic. Rehana is friendly and seems to take a huge amount of pride in her food. Certainly a great place to go, but a deep clean and fresh paint would certainly spruce the place up. That's ok though, she can get away with it given the awesome food.

Trendy yes. Tasty maybe.
Submitted Tuesday, August 26, 2008 - 3:06pm [Dine in]

Capone’s seems to be doing a solid job at fitting into the trendy neighborhood of yaletown. I have dined at Capone’s once and would say the service was average, the food decent, but not to be compared to a true Italian feast. Trends seem to carry a restaurant a long ways these days, but it doesn’t disguise the neutral service and ok food.

Anducci's2729 Barnett Hwy, Coquitlam
A solid place to eat
Submitted Sunday, August 10, 2008 - 10:42am [Dine in]

I have eaten at Anducci’s on a couple of occasions and overall I would say it’s an all around positive dining experience with tasty food, solid service, and a nice atmosphere. It’s headed in a more trendy direction for the food it servers vs. a classic Italian style, but if you want a lot of food for a decent price then it’s the place for you. You also must try the bruschetta, it’s really delicious. We will definitely good back.

Please pass the Ouzo
Submitted Friday, August 8, 2008 - 2:37am [Dine in]

My fiancée and hoped to make this our new Greek restaurant given its close proximity to Newport Village. Not going to happen. The food was greasy, overcooked, and any flavour was overpowered by copious amounts of salt. The service was attentive and friendly, but just ok. The restaurant hired a karaoke-type singer to entertain for the evening. What a mistake, and if it wasn’t for the Ouzo I don’t know if I would have made it through dinner. If you looking for Greek, I strongly suggest going somewhere else.

Samba Brazilian Steak House1122 Alberni Street, Vancouver
Samba's and its dancers...
Submitted Friday, August 8, 2008 - 2:24am [Dine in]

I have been to Samba’s on two occasions. Both times my fiancée and I were super hungry, so this was a good choice. Dining at Samba’s is an “interesting” experience. The skewered meets are great if you enjoy an abundance of different flavours and types. The salad bar is ok, a little soggy though. The entertainment (“Brazilian” dancers) are, well, entertaining, but a little odd at the same time. Samba’s is pretty good choice if you are hungry and craving some meat.

Pajo's Fish & Chips2800 Murray St, Port Moody
Yuck
Submitted Monday, August 4, 2008 - 3:38pm [Dine in]

I write this review with a lingering taste of grease in my mouth. After hearing such great reviews of Pajo’s my fiancé and I decided to try it given we were out for a day in the sun at Rockypoint park. Yuck. What a mistake. I ordered the large Halibut fish and chips. Although the batter was light (tempura like) it was so greasy. The fish was soggy, the fries soaked in residual grease. We both took a couple bites and threw the rest out. A restaurant like Trolls far surpasses this joint. The service was friendly, but it took 45 minutes to get our food. On that note, I guess if you’re out with the family at the beach and don’t know what good food is, it could pass.

I loved it!
Submitted Monday, August 4, 2008 - 10:40am [Dine in]

I usually keep my reviews short and to the point, but I’m going to make this one a little long winded. I’m so surprised Kam’s is only rating at 2.5 stars! I went for dinner at Kam’s the other night and left so excited to come back and post an excellent review. My fiancé has been coming to Kam’s for years, and he was quite excited to take me there. Granted I have only been there once, but what a great experience. First, we were met at the door by Kam himself with a friendly, up-beat “hello my-friends” greeting. Second, we pulled a 2 for 1 coupon out of the paper, and we didn’t even know it was off the table until the discount appeared on the bill. The server gave us absolutely no attitude or gruff about the coupon. The server was friendly and polite, we never once felt rushed. Third, the décor—orchids, colours, fabrics....I loved it! The restaurant itself was very clean. Fourth, the drinks and food were SUPERB. 9/10. We ordered several dishes including Tom Kah seafood soup, long bean spicy chicken, ginger beef, and goong pad. All of the dishes were perfectly cooked, the meat was incredibly tender and flavourful, the veggies were crisp, and the combinations of sweet, salty, and spicy were excellent. At the end of the meal Kam came over and gave me a little gift of a cute Singapore style tea cup. A perfect ending to a perfect dining experience. We will definitely be going back. I have to chuckle when I read about people getting “kicked out” of Kam’s. My impression of Kam is a “like it or lump it” attitude and isn’t going to cater to a fussy customer. I’m sure this would freak out a lot of people. But he can get away with it!

Totally rocks.
Submitted Wednesday, July 30, 2008 - 4:42pm [Dine in]

The Afghan Horsemen is a totally unique place to dine with outstanding food and cultural flair. It’s suitable for anyone who is looking for a different experience from other trusted restaurants. The food is delicious, service friendly, prices reasonable, and it’s very clean. I's a great place to bring friends, family, or just cuddle up with your honey on the floor pillows. I love it and can’t wait to go back.

Memphis Blues Barbeque House1465 W. Broadway, Vancouver
Best BBQ house around.
Submitted Wednesday, July 30, 2008 - 1:15pm [Dine in]

My fiancé and I love this BBQ house and it’s great to find a place in Vancouver that isn’t serving over-priced, trendy, boring, vegetarian-like food. The food is great, but you should be a full-fledge meat-eater to have full appreciation. The meat is so tender and flavourful, plus you get a lot for your dollar. You have to have a certain level of understanding for the service. The employees are laid back and you have to pretty much serve yourself for everything. My only issue is when they expect a tip for their behind the counter, care-free service style.

Stepho's Greek Taverna1124 Davie St, Vancouver
Pretty good
Submitted Thursday, July 24, 2008 - 10:28am [Dine in]

I know Stepho’s is a popular Greek restaurant in Vancouver and I can see why. It’s well priced, the service is fast, and if you’re craving Greek food it’s a good place to get your fill. However, if you’re looking for top-quality food than Stepho’s might not be the place to go. I know Greek food well and although Stepho’s is solid, there are better Greek restaurants out there.

An overall good experience
Submitted Friday, July 11, 2008 - 8:51pm [Dine in]

My fiancé and I had an overall good dining experience at Kobe Steak House. My fiancé has been to Japan on several occasions and spent months at a time there. The reviewer below implied that Kobe Steak House didn’t compare to those in Japan, he’s probably right, but for Vancouver it’s pretty good. The chef was fun, the server ok, the food really great, the atmosphere--dark. If you’re looking for something different, then give it a go.

2 vistis, 2 different experinces.
Submitted Thursday, July 10, 2008 - 7:51pm [Dine in]

I have dined at Hy’s Encore with my fiancé on two separate occasions. The first time was excellent. I love steak, and I’m a tough-critic when it comes to a good steak. I must say though 10/10 on the steaks at Hy’s. The ambiance was very old-boys club style, which is great if you are in the mood, and typical of a true steak-house restaurant. My issue comes with the service. The first time I went the service was solid, efficient, and professional. However, the second time I loathed it. We had a pompous, arrogant, rude, un-professional server, who cared more about himself than his guests. Red flag people. Perhaps this individual won’t last in the business, but it certainly left a bad taste in my mouth and I haven’t been back since.

Fun, but I left wanting more
Submitted Thursday, July 10, 2008 - 7:43pm [Dine in]

I must begin by saying that the pancakes here are incredible! Packed with fresh fruit and huge, I loved every bite! I totally get the concept of the café and what they are trying to pull off, but I must say I was expecting a little more attitude and fun from our server. Too scripted and our serve seemed a little awkward with the entire situation...that or she was just tired of “performing.” Other than that it was well-worth the experience and food.

Excellent
Submitted Saturday, July 5, 2008 - 3:52pm [Dine in]

As a resident of Newport Village, St. James’s has become a regular place to have great food and a great time. The place is packed on Friday and Saturday nights with a friendly, up-beat crowd. I have also dined at St. James’s for lunch on several occasions. The food is fantastic, the service solid, prices are reasonable, and the atmosphere typical of an Irish pub. It's a great place to bring family, go for drinks with friends, or begin your Saturday night. No complaints here...I love it!

A must try
Submitted Saturday, July 5, 2008 - 3:42pm [Dine in]

I dined at Jamesons in Newport Village once about 1 month ago and have been looking forward to going back since. I found the food to be very good, cooked properly, and presented in a classy fashion. The service was excellent. The server was very knowledgeable about the drink and food options, including how they were prepared. I have not had the experience of dining on their patio, but walk by it daily and look forward to lounging their in the sun with a drink. Overall the experience was great; if you want a friendly, efficient, smart service, a tasty drink, and some great food I absolutely recommend Jamesons.

Great patio, not so great everything else.
Submitted Saturday, July 5, 2008 - 3:31pm [Dine in]

I had dinner on the patio at the Boathouse Restaurant the other evening. The inexperienced hostess was polite but unable to answer standard questions, including enquiries about reservations. The service was also mediocre, with friendly, but inexperienced wait staff. The food was ok, the drinks ok too. However, with that being said, I must say the overall atmosphere and decorating is great, and the patio fantastic. My recommendation—make use of the patio on a hot summer day with drinks and an appy, but if you expect great food and service save your money.
