Wonderful dinner/awesome value
Submitted Monday, October 13, 2008 - 2:12pm [Dine in]

This little gem is something special in Vancouver. We just recently moved to Calgary and were back in town for the Thanksgiving weekend staying at a downtown hotel. We wanted to go somewhere near by that didn't cost an arm/leg so we passed on Le Crocodile and opted to try Saveur just a block further north.

We met our friends there at 8PM and began one of the finest gastronomic experiences in memory. The Saveur has a prix fixe menu with about 5 choices in each category. My friend had the corn chowder for starters as this is one of his favorites and he opined that he'd never tasted better. For our main three of us had the halibut which was cooked to perfection. It was flavorful and just melted in our mouths. My friend's partner had lamb which she also raved about.

The service was attentive yet unpretentious. We were made to feel like special guests in someone's home. The woman who served us (whom I believe might be part owner) was extremely knowledgeable about the wines and suggested two perfect pairings.

We finished off with wonderful desserts (everything they do in chocolate is exceptional) and espressos. When the bill arrived we pleasantly surprised. A three course meal for four with two outstanding bottles of wine for $340.

It's wonderful to know this level of value exists in the downtown core. Great food and atmosphere. Gorgeous wine list, awesome service, fine quality linens, stemware and flatware. Saveur has it all. My only regret is we're flying back to Calgary today but I'm sure next time we're in Vancouver Saveur will be number one on our agenda.

Good breakfast
Submitted Monday, October 13, 2008 - 12:35pm [Dine in]

I'm kind of a breakfast snob. I rate a place by how well they do the basics which to me is eggs and sausages with pan-fried potatoes and toast. Call me old fashioned, ball me boring. Anyway, Joe's hits the mark on all counts. Coffee is good too. Definitely worth a try. The place was packed and turns quickly yet our order was taken quickly, the food arrived in less than 10 minutes and we never had to ask for a refill, as our server popped by every couple of minutes with the pot. They do all the usual breakfast alternates as well, eg eggs bennie, pancakes, french toast. My wife had the bennies and she was very pleased and she's as fussy about her bennies as I am about the basic breakfast.

Consistently good and authentic
Submitted Wednesday, August 15, 2007 - 11:30pm [Dine in]

I've been here at least 30 times. From business lunches to romantic one-on-one with my wife to large (30+) family gatherings. The one thing that always impresses is the consistently good food and service. I've enjoyed half the menu items and have never been disappointed. My mamma is a good Italian cook and so is my wife and the folks at Dario's always dish it up as good or better (I hope neither of them read this). Their menu is authentic too. Never pretentious, just basic Italian classics. One of the key things to notice is how many Italians eat there... a lot.

I'm always impressed to see the same servers there year after year, esp with the turnover in that profession. To me that says a lot. One day I ran into a server on Commercial Dr. He recognized me and invited me to go have coffee with him. Its like a family. And they work as a team. Anyone passing by will get you whatever you need. They don't hassle you with being uber-cool and trendy. They just look after you. The veal dishes are all great. The canneloni is superb. If you order the house wine, pick the Sangiovese.

Finally a good breakfast place on the N. Shore
Submitted Tuesday, August 14, 2007 - 10:22pm [Dine in]

Heard some good stuff about Tommy's so we tried it out on Sunday for breakfast. First rate breakfast place. Good coffee... server yourself bottomless cup... Yum and not that watered down coffee that tastes like tea. The real stuff! Great taters with my eggs. Non-nitrate bacon. Sausages were quite bland... they really need to do something about that. Service was quick and friendly. We're old farts who appreciate a good breakfast but most of the other folk were in their 20s so that was kind of cool hangin with the 'younger crowd'. There were also a few families with kids too. Not quite as good as Arms Reach for breakfast, but AR doesn't open until 11AM! This is definitely going to be our 'out of home' weekend breakfast place.

Eclectic menu friendly atmosphere
Submitted Tuesday, August 14, 2007 - 10:16pm [Dine in]

We've been to AR several times... breakfast, lunch, dinner. Just the two of us and with a whole gang, including teenagers and their friends. We've always been happy. The menu is inspired but not 'over the top' chichi. Interesting experimentation and combinations but at the same time grounded so that everyone can relate. The servers are fun, attentive, friendly and there to serve. Always a smile and 'I'm happy to do that for you' attitude. The wine list is remarkable for a bistro of this size (and location) and the staff are very knowledgeable about their wines. Deep Cove is a funky kind of place and the view to the cove is very restful. The decor is relaxed and there's always a nice buzz of conversation but not overwhelming. Weird bits... the washroom is in another, albeit, adjacent building. Its hard to get in (the restaurant, not the washrooms) so make sure you have a reservation.. even on weeknights
