Golden Swan Restaurant5380 Victoria, Vancouver
One of the best chinese restaurants on the east side of Vancouver!
Submitted Monday, June 30, 2008 - 5:33pm [Dine in]

I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants to enjoy a good, traditional, Chinese dinner.
The food is portioned well, very tasty, and reasonably priced.
I have a feeling that the restaurant was recently re-done within the last year (as some of the previous posters said they didn't enjoy the ambiance).
The service is relatively typical of what you'd expect in a Chinese restaurant (therefore: don't expect 5 star service).
Overall, this is a good restaurant..I've been here quite a few times (dim sum, lunch, dinner)..and found them to be consistent with their food and service.

Good food...but LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG waits!
Submitted Monday, June 30, 2008 - 5:28pm [Dine in]

I've been to this restaurant on a number of occasions for family dinners (all with reservations). And despite having made reservations each and every time..we're always forced to wait (the longest wait being an hour and fifteen minutes!!!). The food is good. The decor is nice. But they completely jam pack the restaurant with so many tables that there's basically no walking room (unless you consider having to bash into chairs and other people while walking 5 feet). And because of the excess number of tables...you can't go through 5 minutes of your meal without someone bumping into your chair.
I don't recommend this restaurant to people..in general..just don't go. Go to Golden Swan up the street...it's just as nice on the inside..similar priced food...but a LOT more spacious!

Pajo's Fish & Chips3500 Bayview Street, Richmond
Yummy fish..questionable chips.
Submitted Monday, June 30, 2008 - 5:13pm [Dine in]

My bf and I went to Pajo's after an afternoon of walking around Steveston. We went there pretty early in the afternoon, so the line up to order was short and the wait time for food was reasonable (about 5-10 minutes).
My bf ordered the salmon and I ordered the halibut and both were really tasty. The salmon was really juicy and the halibut was perfectly cooked. The fries, however, were pretty inconsistent. My fries were over done..burnt to a crisp..drowning in grease. My bf's fries, however, were a little under cooked, but still edible.
The view from the pier is really nice..I enjoyed sitting on the lounge chairs while enjoying our greasy dinner.
Would we go again? Yup. Would we recommend you to go?
Sure..as long as the line up is short (it's not something really worth waiting in long line up's for).

Absolutely average.
Submitted Monday, June 30, 2008 - 12:46pm [Dine in]

I've been to this location a few times now and overall it's been consistently average. The food is okay..something you'd expect from restaurants like Earls..Milestones..etc. The service, however, is somewhat lacking. The last two servers I had while here weren't all that friendly..were missing for much of our dinner..and also quite pushy (felt like we were being rushed out even though it was a Wednesday night and half the restaurant was empty). Despite the average food and the lacking service, the decor of the restaurant is beautiful.

Cactus Club Cafe588 Burrard Street, Vancouver
Great start to a beautiful restaurant.
Submitted Sunday, June 29, 2008 - 1:49am [Dine in]

After reading the article in the Vancouver Sun I felt inclined to try the new $6.5 million Cactus Club in the heart of the business district in downtown.

We started off in the lounge which has a really nice and open feel. When we were seated, we got to take a look at the entirety of the restaurant from the second floor. The entire restaurant is beautiful..you can definately tell that a great amount of time and effort was put into styling every detail of this restaurant.

The food was great. My bf and I thoroughly enjoyed the new additions to the menu (courtsey of chef Rob Feenie). We tried the calamari sandwich and the BBQ duck club sandwich. We liked both sandwiches but the BBQ duck was the clear favorite for the both of us. It was just MOUTHWATERING!

So, if you're downtown and have a hankering for some good food at a reasonable price..I highly recommend going to Cactus Club on Burrard. Great drinks, great view, great food, great service...just great!

Great unpretentious fusion food!
Submitted Tuesday, April 15, 2008 - 9:26pm [Dine in]

My family and I came here tonight for a casual birthday and anniversary dinner and had a wonderful time. This was our first visit to the restaurant, and were pleasantly surprised.
The food was deliciously SPICY! The prices were just right (average for chinese food), and the quantity was decent.
The service was really good. Our server was very attentive and knowledgeable. He recommended a few dishes that turned out to be our favorites for the night.
This restaurant definately solidifies the whole saying of "Don't judge a book by its cover"..well, in this case exterior.
Overall, I would highly recommend this restaurant if you want a casual fusion experience!

Eatery, The3431 W Broadway, Vancouver
Great wings
Submitted Saturday, January 26, 2008 - 9:46pm [Dine in]

Wanted to try something different for my bf's b-day, so we headed out to The Eatery after someone mentioned that it was in the neighbourhood. Even though it was a busy Saturday night, we got a seat in less than 2 minutes. The tables were definately close together, and there was definately a LOT of people in the restaurant, but we lucked out and got a corner table. We got a few different things off of their menu (some wings, donburi, tempura) and enjoyed some drinks. The style of food there is definately jap/fusion inspired food and well worth the money. I would definately recommend this restaurant to someone who just wants to try something a little different :)

Griffins900 West Georgia St., Vancouver
Best desserts in town!
Submitted Friday, August 24, 2007 - 4:18pm [Dine in]

I've been to Griffins about 4-5 times in the past few years and I've come to really enjoy their fare. In the past, I've tried their version of a seafood trio, crab cakes, steaks, sandwiches, and of COURSE the dessert buffet, and have never been disappointed. The only thing I would improve upon is the service. During one of my latest visits, there were some problems in the kitchen or something, so it took over an hour (about an hour and a half) to receive our entrees. When we inquired about why the food was taking so long, the waiter AND the manager were rather flippant and didn't offer any reason other than that they were very busy. We have been to this restaurant on MULTIPLE occasions DURING the tourist season, and have encountered similar crowds to this on other nights...but never have we had to wait such a long time for our dinner.
Either way, I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone willing to try it out!

Sushi Garden4635 Kingsway, Burnaby
Good sushi on kingsway
Submitted Friday, August 24, 2007 - 4:03pm [Dine in]

I've been to Sushi Garden on multiple occasions and find the experience only mediocre. Whenever I bring new people to this restaurant they find the fruit sushi very amusing and appetizing. I usually go with my bf, and he loves this place b/c the sashimi is fairly fresh and reasonably priced. My only qualm with this place is that there never seems to be enough waitresses..leaving the ones that do work there flustered and frustrated I imagine. The decor of this restaurant is also lacking..but I suppose that's how they keep the prices down. Overall, I'll probably frequent this sushi place more in the future when I make the move to Burnaby.

Samurai Japanese Restaurant1108 Davie Street, Vancouver
Best bang for your buck!
Submitted Thursday, June 28, 2007 - 5:40pm [Dine in]

My boyfriend come here almost every weekend. The food at Samurai is not only generous but extremely tasty. There are sooo many different items on the menu that it's difficult to choose at times (as there are so many favorites). If it weren't for the fact that parking downtown can be a pain, we would be here waay more often!

Walk a few blocks more for better tacos...
Submitted Thursday, June 28, 2007 - 3:50pm [Dine in]

I went to Taco Shack when they first opened and was rather disappointed. When I tried to order, the girl (Korean or Japanese) barely spoke a word of english, and couldn't understand when I tried to order chicken taco's...they only sold taco's at the time (only 3 types of meat too!). The taco's were tiny, tasteless, and definately not worth the money. I would rather spend the SAME amount of money, and walk 6 blocks further to go get some REAL taco's from Burrito Brothers!

Hi-Nippon Japanese Restaurant2274 West 4th Avenue, Vancouver
Just ok.
Submitted Thursday, June 28, 2007 - 3:45pm [Dine in]

Hi-Nippon is one of the many japanese restaurants around the kitsilano area. This place has mediocre food, mediocre service, and a mediocre decor. It's not a great place I'd recommend people to go to only because the prices are average, the food is average, and the place is average. There are MANY other japanese restaurants around the area that offer the exact same thing. The service has been slowly going downhill as well. The last time I went for dinner, I waited for almost an HOUR for a sushi box.

Tomokazu Japanese Restaurant1128 West Broadway, #201, Vancouver
Better than I thought!
Submitted Thursday, June 28, 2007 - 3:36pm [Dine in]

I went here this week on a Monday night with my family and was pleasantly surprised. I've been to many of the AYCE restaurants around Vancouver and Richmond, and found this one to be the best "bang for your buck." There was a large variety of sushi and sashimi as well as cooked items. One item I found to be EXTRA tasty was the short ribs. Short ribs at other AYCE restaurants have been dry...tough...and fatty..BUT, Tomokazu's short ribs were very tender and tasty!
The service was mediocre. You should never expect 100% wonderful customer service when eating at an AYCE place! I also liked how the tables and booths weren't placed too close together (like many other AYCE places).
Overall I give this place two thumbs up ;)

Hamilton Street Grill1009 Hamilton Street, Vancouver
Disappointed
Submitted Sunday, June 24, 2007 - 11:43am [Dine in]

I went out with a few friends last night (my suggestion) to the Hamilton Street Grill. I'd been there before, but honestly could not remember my previous experience there. I was very disappointed with the level of service we received as well as the quality of food. A few of our friends ordered the 20 oz steak which they said was great...but the other friends who ordered seafood and duck were greatly disappointed. I had the salmon, and it was SO dry and inedible that I just stopped eating it. I also ordered their strawberry daiquiri which was bland and tasteless (blended strawberries with ice and a shot of rum). The service was definately mediocre....I firmly believe that I could have received better service at a Milestones or Cactus Club! If I plan on going to a restaurant that charges 20-30 dollars per entree, I'd much rather go to other similar restaurants like Griffins!

The BEST pasta in town.
Submitted Friday, April 6, 2007 - 11:21pm [Dine in]

My boyfriend and I ALWAYS go to Candia's when we're looking for some hearty and tasty pasta. This is THE PLACE to go to if you're looking for a filling meal in a restaurant with good service and great decor. I always look forward to getting their baked ravioli and their spaghetti and meatballs. I think this will be the ONLY place we go to in Vancouver for pasta!

Not that great...
Submitted Friday, April 6, 2007 - 11:16pm [Dine in]

Rugby Beach Club Grille is a good place to go to if you don't care about the service or the food.

The ambiance is okay, but certainly doesn't compensate for the lack of service. The food is only mediocre (over priced for the variety and quality of the food they serve).

If you're thinking of going to this restaurant, I have only one suggestion: DON'T. There are SOO many other restaurants in Vancouver (on West Broadway alone) that you could go to.

Nor Boo Korean Restaurant1536 Robson St., Vancouver
Best short ribs in Vancouver!
Submitted Monday, March 19, 2007 - 8:43pm [Dine in]

I went here with my boyfriend and a few friends for the first time a few weeks ago. I didn't know what to expect because the interior of the restaurant was kind of "interesting" but there was a LOT of people inside and outside waiting to get in. We waited for about 40 minutes for a table, and when we got our food, we realized why so many people were willing to brave the winter cold waiting to get in! We ordered a 6 different plates of food, and while everything was okay, the beef short ribs definately lived up to their reputation! It's been almost 3 weeks since I've been there, and I'm still craving them now! Aside from the short ribs, the service was decent, and the ambiance was okay. I would definately go back for the short ribs :)

Submitted Saturday, September 30, 2006 - 9:42pm [Dine in]

My boyfriend and I have been going to this restaurant for YEARS. We really enjoy the food, the service, the drinks and the atmosphere. The person who owned this restaurant was always ALWAYS super nice and friendly with all his customers. The food was always consistant and tasty. We're both heartbroken that this restaurant has closed!

Wings Restaurants & Pubs1162 Granville Street, Vancouver
Poor Management
Submitted Saturday, September 30, 2006 - 9:37pm [Dine in]

My boyfriend and I went to this restaurant tonight, and had an "interesting" experience. The waitress we had was relatively nice, and the food was pretty good...but the manager we spoke with was completely unacceptable. After only finishing 1/3 of my dinner, I asked the waitress to wrap it up to go. She threw it away. She did come over to apologize, which was great, but her manager also came by as well. The manager that worked there was completely unprofessional, rude, and uncaring about his restaurants service and reputation. We had wanted to use a coupon from the Entertainment book, but he came over to explain some of the details and stipulations of the coupon, and was completely condescending and started going on and on about how his business would lose money, and the cost of the advertisement. We, personally, DID NOT CARE. Despite the GREAT wings they had there, I will never go there again. If you like great wings and don't care about the service, go to Wings...I'd rather go to somewhere like Fogg n Sudds...at least they have consistantly good service!
