Submitted Saturday, September 13, 2008 - 9:31pm [Dine in]

Went here last night w/a few girlfriends for a later dinner and was pretty disappointed in the overall experience.

This Cactus Club is far below par when compared to the other locations.

Food: solid considering that Cactus Club is very consistent with their products. I ordered the salmon sandwich which was delicious, but the yam fries that came with it were just ok.

Service: first off, this is not downtown, this is not yaletown, heck, this isn't even west broadway..and yet they insist on long waits at after 9pm. The hostesses were far too distracted flirting w/their co-workers than to actually pay attention to waiting guests. Our waitress was ok. She did the bare minimum required for service staff (took drink orders, took food orders, etc...)

Value: solid. I always enjoy the food at Cactus Club.

Ambiance: it's time for an update.

And with regards to the poster below (commenting on the menu not being changed even w/Rob Feenie brought on board)...FYI: new menu items are only available at specific locations (ex: Cambie and Broadway and Burrard downtown).

Hi Genki Japanese Restaurant6680 Southoaks Crescent, Burnaby
Another wonderful dinner.
Submitted Friday, August 22, 2008 - 10:45am [Dine in]

Just had dinner last night at Hi Genki to visit a relative who lives there and had the BEST dinner we've had there thus far.

The food was fantastic. I ordered the oyako don while many others ordered various curries and other more traditional dishes. Everything tasted wonderful. Their oyako don is the best I've had in the lower mainland! We also ordered a few desserts (green tea ice cream, banana tempera, and another more traditional japanese dessert). Everything was delicious!

The service was truly outstanding. Our waitress was so kind to my fiance's grandmother and great aunt. It was definately so helpful that she spoke Japanese to clearly communicate the menu's with them. Our waitress was also very attentive to when we needed something or when we wanted to order even after the listed kitchen closing time.

The ambiance has improved since we last visited. It looks like they've updated a few of the tables and I think I even noticed a fresh coat of paint.

Overall, I HIGHLY recommend this little Japanese cafeteria to anyone looking for some tasty and authentic japanese cuisine.

Cannery Seafood House, The2205 Commissioner Street, Vancouver
Wonderful restaurant with great food and a gorgeous view!
Submitted Monday, August 11, 2008 - 6:27pm [Dine in]

I went to the Cannery today w/my fiance and had a wonderful lunch.
We had the risotto and the crab & salmon cakes which were both delicious. The yam fries we ordered as an appetizer was very filling. For dessert, we ordered the pavlova w/fresh fruit which was very light and delicious.
The service was very good. Our server was very attentive and outgoing.
I thought that we got a lot of value for our experience, since we used the Entertainment coupon. But, we'd still go anyways since the food is really good.
The ambiance is great. We went on a gorgeous day, had a window seat, and had a wonderful lunch.

I highly HIGHLY recommend The Cannery for your next special lunch/dinner before they move in about a year.

Good experience
Submitted Friday, August 8, 2008 - 1:09pm [Dine in]

I've been to Aqua Riva on numerous occasions (for NYE dinner, brunch, b-day's..etc) and have thoroughly enjoyed each visit.

The food is your standard "find dining" food..lots of seafood. It wasn't spectacular..but still pretty good.

The service is very attentive. Our drinks were never empty before the waiter came by to ask if we'd like another.

The ambiance is beautiful at night overlooking the harbour. In the daytime..well, that's a different story; it's still nice..just...a bit "colourful" for my liking.

Overall, I think this is a pretty good "fine dining" restaurant.

I love Tropika
Submitted Thursday, August 7, 2008 - 2:24pm [Dine in]

Tropika has been and still is one of my absolute favourite restaurants.

I went here with a group of friends this past weekend and we all had a great time.

The food: tasty (and not to mention SPICY for some). I had their pad thai which I really enjoyed. I really wish I had gotten their home style chicken, or their satay sticks, or their flat bread..but I can only eat so much!

The service: ok. The waiter seemed constantly too busy to look after us, or attend to us when we wanted to order more.

The value: good compared to other restaurants of similar quality and genre.

Ambiance: nice. I like the airy feel of the restaurant. HOWEVER, my friends told me that the ladies bathroom was kind of gross..so, I didn't factor that in the "ambiance" rating.

Mhmmm..CREPES!
Submitted Thursday, August 7, 2008 - 2:07pm [Dine in]

I've been to this location a number of times w/the bf and we both enjoy their crepes. We've both had their savoury crepes and their sweet crepes.

The food: always tasty. I've tried their sandwiches, salads, and of course crepes and of all their menu items, I still enjoy their crepes the most. They may not be "authentic" according to some people, but they're tasty just the same.

The service: is ok. The waitresses there are often flustered b/c it's so busy, but they're really pleasant overall.

The value: pretty good considering the size of some of their crepes (I love their ham, egg and cheese crepe).

The ambiance: chic, but a little loud. Sometimes it feels like I'm at a club in there w/the music..but otherwise I like their choice in decor.

I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for something other than pizza, sushi, donairs and burgers downtown!

Vera's Burger Shack1935 Cornwall Ave, Vancouver
Overpriced Burgers
Submitted Thursday, August 7, 2008 - 1:58pm [Dine in]

I've been to Vera's a couple of times in the past and have never been impressed by their food, service, value, or anything else related to them for that matter.

Their burgers are ok. They taste like the frozen burger patties you buy from the grocery store and grill at home (no flavour). The toppings are okay. The fries and onion rings are ALWAYS super super greasy.

There isn't a whole lot of service. Someone takes your order. They cook it (probably in about 10-20 minutes). Then they call your name and you go get it. So, no service in my opinion.

As for value: what value? For the price they charge at Vera's, I could go to Cactus Club, Milestones, Burgers Etc, Red Robins for a far FAR superior burger (and service to boot!).

Ambiance is dingy. It looks ok from the outside, but everything (from the chairs, tables, countertops, ketchup bottles) is covered in a slimy and sticky layer of grease. YUCK

I highly do NOT recommend Vera's to anyone wanting a decent burger. Head over to McD's or BK for a quick burger fix.

Burgers Etc. BBQ House4091 Hastings St., Burnaby
Tastiest burger in town? YUP!
Submitted Tuesday, August 5, 2008 - 3:26pm [Dine in]

I don't think I'm exaggerating (or CTV viewers for that matter), when the burgers at Burgers Etc. were voted the BEST in the Lower Mainland.

My bf had the burger with cheddar and it was delicious! It was the most flavourful burger I had ever tasted. The ingredients tasted so fresh...the pickle was crisp, the bun soft, the lettuce fresh, and the patty was nicely cooked to a medium well.

I had the pulled pork sandwich, which was very tasty (and not to mention HUGE). The fries that came w/my meal were okay. Nothing to write home about.

The service was pleasant. We ordered take out, but the waitress who took my order was really pleasant and knowledgeable about the restaurant.

The value is pretty good. It's comparable to other restaurants and BBQ places (like Milestones, Red Robins, Memphis Blues).

Ambiance is quite a surprise. The exterior of the restaurant doesn't look all that nice, but from what I could see inside, it was pretty nice and clean.

I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a simple and tasty burger. YUM

Great kung pao but doesn't seem fusion anymore
Submitted Tuesday, August 5, 2008 - 1:04pm [Dine in]

I went here recently w/the BF on a Thursday night after a two year hiatus from the restaurant.

We ordered the kung pao noodle dish, which is my bf's absolute favorite dish. I tried ordering a few different items but it seemed like everything I chose was not available, so I settled with some sort of fish ravioli.

The kung pao noodle dish was great (as usual) and my ravioli concoction was tasty..but where's the "chinese fusion"? I was really disappointed to see the changes made to the menu, as I REALLY enjoyed the menu items they had on there before.

The service is always pleasant and attentive here.

The value is not that great seeing as they've increased the prices gradually with no increase of food quality/portion/variety/etc. Furthermore, with chinatown only a mere steps away, you can likely get a lot more "value" out of a meal there. And as previous posters have mentioned, the drinks are expensive.

The ambiance is nice. Very chic.

Would I go back? Probably, for the kung pao chicken. Should you go? Yes, you should...try the kung pao chicken.

Good Japanese food on Hastings.
Submitted Saturday, August 2, 2008 - 9:01pm [Dine in]

This place is a great hidden gem. I've been here a few times with co-workers and found the food to be really tasty. I like how the items they serve resemble more traditional Japanese food, rather than the stuff you'd find at regular Japanese sushi places.
The service is pleasant.
The value is pretty good..but I've only ever been here for lunch, so I can't say as much about dinner.
Ambiance is ok. The outside looks like an autobody shop (the sign is really old), but the inside has nice little booths.

Very satisfied with Banzai Sushi House
Submitted Saturday, August 2, 2008 - 5:18pm [Dine in]

The food: big BIG pieces of sushi. Pretty solid quality for a sushi place in this price range. I really enjoyed their house roll.

The service was okay. They were going through a lunch rush, so I didn't expect them to be super attentive. They were, however, very polite and definately tried their best.

Value is outstanding. As the previous poster said: you can definately get full off of $8.00 ($5.00 if you order the 1/2 house roll!).

Ambiance is decent. It's a LOT nicer than their sister restaurant (Samurai on Fraser or Cambie).

Overall: I would highly recommend anyone looking for an inexpensive but fulfilling lunch!

Cactus Club Cafe5500 No. 3 Road, Richmond
Not up to par with the other locations
Submitted Saturday, August 2, 2008 - 11:50am [Dine in]

Had dinner here last night with a few of my friends and had an "interesting" experience at this Cactus Club location.

The food was okay over all. But the drinks were definately not the same as the other locations. We all ordered bellini's..and promptly got a melted concoction resembling a martini with flecks of icy bits in it...definately NOT the standard for a CC bellini.

The service was definately not what you'd expect from a Cactus Club. Our waitress ignored us right after we ordered our drinks. She never came back until I finally WAVED her down to ask if we could order. After ordering, we waited a very reasonable amount of time and two of the three of us received our food. After about 10 minutes of waiting, someone finally brought the third plate of food, but there was no apology of any sort. After our dinner, we ordered dessert, which was promptly delivered with no utensils. GREAT! After waving down another waitress, we finally got our utensils. When we were already half-way done with our desserts, OUR waitress finally came by with utensils and fresh napkins.

Now for ambiance. Since I started going to Cactus Club, oh..what..a good TEN years ago, they haven't changed the decor. So, it's long overdue for a reno!

Angel Cafe5995 Fraser Street, Vancouver
Best HK style cafe in East Van!
Submitted Saturday, August 2, 2008 - 11:43am [Dine in]

Angel Cafe is my absolute FAVORITE HK style cafe in East Vancouver because of their great food selection and location (I live about 5 min away). I've been there for breakfast, lunch, dinner, late night snack..and have never been disappointed.
Their breakfast menu has a large variety of both western and chinese items at super reasonable prices (for about $6 you can get a combination of a western dish and asian dish with a beverage: a combination that is both filling and satisfying).
Their lunch menu and dinner menu offer many different options as well.
Needless to say, the value is excellent.
The service is reasonable for what you'd get at a chinese restaurant. They're relatively pleasant and try to be efficient.
Ambiance is fairly nice. I like their booths..but the interior of the restaurant needs a fresh coat of paint.

Overall: I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a HK style cafe in East Vancouver!

Las Margaritas1999 West 4th Avenue, Vancouver
Mediocre Mexican
Submitted Friday, August 1, 2008 - 2:40pm [Dine in]

I've been to Las Margaritas a number of times, and each time it's not by my choice.

The food there is pretty average. Nothing on the menu particularly stands out in my memory.

The service is *almost* non-existant. After you place your order, you won't see your server again...and if you can, have fun trying to flag them down.

Value is ok. I find their menu to be a bit more than their competitors Pepita's and Andales.

Ambiance is ok. Very noisy (visually too).

This place is ALWAYS packed..and always requires long waits...definately not worth it.

Great food at a great value.
Submitted Friday, August 1, 2008 - 1:34pm [Dine in]

I've been frequenting Sushi King for the last couple months now, and can honestly say that this place is a gem!

The food is really tasty (I especially enjoy their udon and ramen dishes) and generous. The portions are HUGE, but not at the expense of the quality. I've had everything here from the rolls, sashimi, gyoza, tempera..I could go on.

The service is excellent. The waitresses are very attentive and polite. And if you order take out, they're always quick and accurate.

The value is spectacular! Generous portions at low prices.

The ambiance is much nicer than other sushi places at competitive prices. The restaurant is very clean as well.

I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for good sushi at reasonable prices!

Didn't meet our expectations
Submitted Thursday, July 31, 2008 - 6:17pm [Dine in]

Went here a little while ago w/my bf and some friends after dinner.

The food: nothing to write home about. Actually, I would recommend my own friends to steer clear of this place. The yogurt tasted sour and grainy (or is this the way it's supposed to be?) and the fruit toppings were unripe, making the yogurt even MORE sour.

The value: I'd rather go to yogun fruz. Or to a gelato place.

The ambiance: Definately stands out from other restaurants, but too little seating (while we the 4 of us were in the MIDDLE of eating our yogurt, customers and staff alike started giving us dirty looks...as though we should move on...even though we were still eating!)

The service: forgettable.

Overall: I'll stick to my yogun fruz, thank-you-very-much.

True Confections3701 W. Broadway, #6, Vancouver
Good dessert place
Submitted Thursday, July 31, 2008 - 5:51pm [Dine in]

I've been going to True Confections over the past few years and have always enjoyed their dessert.

The service has always been pleasant.

The ambiance is ok. I don't particularly enjoy how all the tables are so close together (close enough to hear every bit of your neighbour's conversation).

As for the food, the food has always been good..not great..but good. I go roughly once a year to celebrate my b-day w/my best friend, and we both agreed that the food is still good..but has definately changed for the worse (some funky additions to their regular items).

Now for value...I don't really see much value in what you get here. They've increased the prices and dramatically decreased the size of their servings. I can't really justify going here anymore knowing that there are many alternative dessert places in Vancouver.

Overall, this place is just OK.

Something different.
Submitted Sunday, July 27, 2008 - 4:04pm [Dine in]

I've been to Samba on a number of occasions throughout the past few years and have had a pleasant experience each and every time.
The restaurant is definately different from what is offered throughout the rest of Metro Vancouver. There's a wide variety of meat such as buffalo, ostrich (YUM!!!), chicken, beef, etc... as well as a salad/pasta buffet. I really like how you can try so many different types of gamey meat in one meal.
The drinks are REALLY expensive (more than what they would charge at lounges...five star restaurants....) but I take it that's where they make a lot of their money.
The service has always been just "OK"...nothing great but nothing to complain about either.
The interior of the restaurant is interesting too..it's a lot larger than I would have guessed..I also enjoyed some of the entertainment they've had here in the past (capoeira, salsa dancing, live music).
Overall, I would recommend this restaurant to someone who loves meat and wants to try something different.

Great wings!
Submitted Sunday, July 27, 2008 - 3:53pm [Dine in]

My bf and I come here once in awhile for their tasty wings. What makes the wings so great? The size..the batter...the crispiness..the sauce..and the price! We usually come here on wing nights (Wednesday's or Friday's) when they're on special.
Aside from the wings, the rest of the menu is your standard pub fare: pizza, salad, burgers...etc.
The drinks: average priced and nothing spectacular.
The service: we don't go there for service....just for the wings....if you rated this place on service alone, well, I just wouldn't go.
The ambiance: standard pub....but they did recently replace their tables and chairs..which is a lot nicer than the plastic patio furniture they used to use.
The value: excellent since they have specials every day!

Best AYCE in the lower mainland!
Submitted Saturday, July 19, 2008 - 4:16pm [Dine in]

I've been here a couple times now..and each time I've left completely satisfied.
The food is what you'd expect of a Japanese AYCE restaurant...you have your standard sushi...gyoza...tempera...etc...but what I really enjoy here is the wide selection of sashimi and their tasty tasty short ribs.
The restaurant itself is very nice too..very clean..very well lit with all the natural lighting.
The service..now..this is the FIRST AYCE restaurant I've been to where the servers are ATTENTIVE and POLITE! The last time I went there, the server actually noticed we'd ordered something and the quantity we ordered wasn't all there, and proceeded to go back and bring it out..A FIRST!
I highly recommend this place to someone looking for good AYCE.
