Boot & Sombrero, The4866 Delta Street, Delta
fairly new in Ladner
Submitted Thursday, August 16, 2007 - 10:40am [Dine in]

Went looking for Uncle Herbert's Fish and Chips a while ago, and found that The Boot and Sombrero had moved in... Ambiance is Southwestern US cowboy-farmer-nostalgia-roadhouse (kinda).

We were there mid-week for a late lunch. The place wasn't busy, but we were dealt with pleasantly and promptly. Tried the pulled-pork sandwich, and it was VERY good - smoky and tender. Curly fries accompanied, and they were excellent, hot and crisp right out of the fryer. Hubby had a chipotle chicken wrap with caesar, and was pleased,

We'll go back.

OK, but just.....
Submitted Sunday, August 12, 2007 - 12:14pm [Dine in]

We ended up here for an early supper on a Saturday, having just tried to get into a restaurant that was closed :-{ This was the first place that we saw after finding our goal papered-up.

It was.....OK. We ordered miso soup, assorted sashimi, prawn gyoza, spicy tuna roll and chop scallop roll. Yeah, I know this is an AYCE, but we just wanted a quick bite, not a gorging.

Sashimi...salmon was good, hamachi was good, tuna was frozen, snapper was stale. Also surf clams and octopus on the plate. Prawn gyoza was VERY greasy, spicy tuna roll was OK, chop scallop roll had a chemical, preservative taste to the scallops. Tea was offered once, and I practically had to trip the waitress to order a beer. Granted, it WAS early, and she seemed to be the only waitress, but.... it wasnt' THAT busy.

It was....just OK. We ate it all, and it didn't bankrupt us, but we KNOW there's better Japanese food out there.

We've been to Luxe twice in the past few weeks, both times for dim sum. Owner/manager is very friendly, dim sum is very good. We will be going back to try out dinner.

One small, small quibble (and it is not JUST at Luxe) but being non-Asian, we ALWAYS get jasmine tea unless I can remember to specify that we DON"T want jasmine. Some of us white folks like bo lay or pu erh...

Saffron Indian Cuisine4300 Kingsway, #5, Burnaby
better-than-average buffet
Submitted Friday, August 3, 2007 - 3:55pm [Dine in]

Went for lunch to celebrate step-daughter's birthday (she works nearby). Good thing we got there early....YIKES, is this place ever busy at lunch!

Our first visit, so we thought we'd try the buffet. Living in the North Delta/Surrey area, we've tried a few... This one is very good, lots of veg and non-veg choices, and the trays were always being replenished. Lots of fresh, hot naan. Staff was friendly and literally run-walking to accomodate everyone. There was a line-up all the way outside the whole time we were there.

Next time we'll order a la carte, but the buffet was worth the visit.

Vita Bella Ristorante4544 Hastings Street, Burnaby
enjoyable dinner

We were looking for decent Italian in East Van/Burnaby area, for step-daughter's birthday. Checked with DineHere.ca and noticed lots of positive reviews for this fairly new place.

Service was great...friendly and attentive. The food was VERY good. I had the fish special (sturgeon), my husband had salmon, step-daughter and her husband had pasta. Food was arranged attractively, arriving promptly and hot.

Obviously a popular spot with locals - by 9:00 on Friday evening, all tables were filled. The only niggling comment I would make was that it was very loud....tile floors echoed every sound.

We would make the trip into Burnaby to go again. Next time, I have to find out which dish going by was wafting that gorgeous, seductive garlic...!
