Sharkeys IS an institution in Ladner, the first place most locals will think of for casual dining. Likely the best known place to "foreigners" too. The setting is great on a warm evening, although it gets crowded out of the deck. The food IS variable, tending toward heavy, salty and sometimes cold. Here's a tip: go on a weekday, when its quieter, and order from the daily sheet.
This place IS worth the trip. But for we Ladnerites, its a lot more pleasant trip than through the tunnel and over a bridge to better restaurants in Vancouver - if you can find one! Certainly beats White Spots for food quality, ambiance, view (lazy river, circling eagles, passing ships) and service - despit having the same owner!
We've been here twice. In the summer, the room was too hot. In the winter, I found the food too hot! But I'm a wimp - my wife found the food great. I should have known what to expect from South India. The service was quick and responsive, the presentation unusual and elegant and the decor very nice. This restaurant is leading the way in upgrading a grungy area.
Classic English grub - no delicate works of art, no exotic ingredients, no "foreign muck" - what else would you expect?! Stella, you've been at it at least 25 years and you don't look a day older! Will be in for a taste of home again soon.
I've been here 3 times, once abt 25 years ago, and twice recently. This is THE European style restaurant in Vancouver. Outstanding in every category shown here, obvious attention to detail in the ambience, the meal, the service, the wine list, etc. It's actually 3 restaurants, perfect for a romantic evening, a more casual lunch or dinner, or a private event (refined, of course).
Why review a White Spot? Everybody knows what to expect! But here you can also fill your cart at Save On, get your hair done, take in a movie or take out a video, and stroll in the lovely P & T gardens nearby.
For a treat I accompany my wife, of Dutch heritage, to a Panekoek House. This one is the closest. Not the best location and a bit cramped but these places are all fine. The food is consistently fresh and tasty, you have lots of choices, and the service is friendly. In case you're up that way, the best one we've found is in Kelowna.
The neighbour and gustatory equivalent of Banyen Books. Bakery of the same name on the other side. Has the required spiritual ambience, the food is good and of course natural - but you 'll pay for it!
A friendly local cafe in the heart of "Little Italy" with classic Italian soups and sandwiches, sweets, coffee, etc. Great spot to lean back outside of an evening and watch the hordes line up for buckets of pasta across the street!
Horizons is our choice for a sunny evening. You can enjoy a stroll with views over Vancouver and up Indian Arm, the rose garden is lovely the air fresh, the sunsets spectacular. The meal is always good and sometimes great, the place is roomy and spacious, the service excellent.
ps keep this between you and me - don't let our secret out!
