Brioche has one thing...it's location. With an enterance off Water Street it's not hard to take a chance and see if the name lives up to its French roots. I took some of my foodie friends for a quick Sunday lunch and to our surprize the ambiance worked for the tiny restaurant. But for the most part the food was nothing specacular. It was soliid and has decent flovours but nothing came extremely warm and it didn't really have that subtle but intense flavour thay you would expect from French and Italian cooking. The prices for somethings were skewed and definitely more expensive than what went in them. Great place to try once but that's about it.
At first, Hi Genki, doesn't seem very welcoming, unless you are a senior citizen, but after looking at the crowd around us, we diecded to give it a go. The ambiance is sort of a mix between hospital cafetria and old folks home, but it was clean and the service was very inviting. The food reminded me of going to my fiance's grandparent's place and was super declicious. Homestyle cooking, with very interesting Japanese touches. I had the gobo tempura, which was a first for me ever and is worth trying. The chefs combine daily specials with regular menu items which keeps everything fresh! If you're looking for tasty Japanese food and don't mind the ambience, Hi Genki is perfect.
Normally I am hesitant about going to sushi places that I haven't heard anything about from my close foodie friends, but this one was worth the drive. Between the three of us we managed to polish off quite a bit of the rolls from a party tray (48 pieces). total damage was only $31 and definitely more than enough sushi for each of us. The fish was fresh and the flavour combos were amazing.
Went there out of the blue and decided to try something different. My friend and I were upset that there wasn't a full menu available, but when our Green Curry Coconut Chicken came...we quickly forgot about the lack-age of menu items. The food was great and the taro matcha milkshakes were awesome! Desert topped everything with a light and delicate matcha cheesecake with chocolate cookie crumbles, walnuts and a raspberry - mango syrup on the side. All in all a very surprising and good bubble tea house.
