A very good and entertaining meal (but have some salt shakers available for crying out loud!)

Me and my GF had dinner there last year. The cook (a younger guy) made the meal right in front of us. As many tables there are at their own seperate grill. Very skilled and enjoyable performance by him, even though he dropped something he was flipping around back onto the grill. Nearly bounced out and on the floor, but made a quick recovery. The food was in the air about half the time it seemed! Right after this happened, there was some older guy (manager?) with his arms folded, watching from maybe 30 feet away. And he said something in Asian to the cook, staring at him. No doubt about him screwing up...lol! Even the cook got a bit of a grin on his face. The food was delicious. I remember having steak, but it was diced up in small squares. I had to ask him to shake some salt on it...twice. After that, GREAT! My GF's meal was good she said, but I can't remember now what she had. The price was higher than someplace like ABC Family Restaurant. But not a lot higher, like say a seafood place. I think my dish was $17.50. And given the way it was prepared right in front of us, well worth the price. Very clean and modern style inside. Not very Classic though which would have been nicer, given the name "Katana". Which evokes images of the Samurai long ago, and their ancient swordmaking. But pleasant enough. And yes, I plan to go back sometime.

...and well, they forgot the Coke. So the guy said he'd come back. He left with my 20 bucks (including the 3 dollar tip). A few minutes go by, no buzz up at the intercom. And it's no far distance from out front the building after midnight, to my apartment. Yet, 5 minutes go by and I'm thinking ok this guy has gone all the way back to the restaurant to get me my missing Coke. SO, I'm going to have to eat my dinner without my drink.....or, eat it cold when he gets back with the Coke. So I phoned after 5 or 6 minutes to let them know this (after I had a few bites). After about a few minutes of explaining, because they don't speak english (except for what sounded like their 12 year old daughter that took my order.....of which that alone took about 10 minutes), the guy buzzes up on the intercom. Ok, got the coke. As for the meal, sorry, over 17 bucks for a single yet good sized styrofoam container with three things, a small egg roll and a little wonton soup with a can of Coke? Too expensive. And the food was OK at best, nothing special. The wonton soup broth was not very good at all. Except the wontons were good. The rice, chow mein and chop suey were mediocre.

{I didn't eat in, so how am I supposed to rate the Ambiance? Yet I have to select a number here, or it won't let me submit this review (very stupid rule on this site). So you can't rate a place's food that you eat...unless you sit in the place itself?......Very stupid. So I gave it a "2". But like I said, I have not been IN the location on 4th Ave.}

And apparently, this place used to be Varsity Grill from up on W. 10th, that changed owners a long time ago(?). But still made the food the same. At least with the Chow Mein. This was in the 90's. So years went by and I heard they moved to 4th ave. Didn't try them at that location, as I had moved. So I look them up tonight, and there's no Varsity Grill anymore, but a place called Win's at the same address and telephone number. So I suppose they either changed the name, or changed owners yet again. I was really hoping the food would be the same. The same great stuff I grew up with on 10th ave. With that REALLY good Chow Mein. It wasn't. Good things just don't last in this lame city.

Yet another typical overpriced place to eat in Kits (where I won't be going back)

I've been in there, once in a while, for many years. Every time.....zombie like slow-a$$ed service. And seems like no one in there could put even a phoney smile on their faces, even if their lives depended on it.

The place is usually always dirty. Many times I've gone in after midnight, and I always see at least a few workers in there. Yet, there's always crahp on the tables, pieces of separated newspaper on different tables, especially outside. Overflowing garbage container outside right by the tables...like a plastic Australian ant hill (but the others in that parking lot are not overflowing...even though THEY closed a long time ago).

And too hot! I was just in the other week at about 2AM, wasn't warm outside (this is May). Try to imagine what it's like in the summer. And I do remember being in there in the summer, it's annoying and really saps your appetite.

As for the food, bagels are bagels. So that is what I order (different types from pizza style to plain, poppyseed, sesame seed, with/without creme cheese). The only stuff that isn't mediocre (to plain lame) is a regular bagel with creme cheese.....for $3.50. So that tastes good......well BIG whoop, I can go to a Tim Hortons drive-thru and get something just as good for less than three bucks. Or go to Benny's Bagels on W. Broadway and relax in a very nice, cool looking and comfy setting (yes they're 24hrs too).

And I don't give a darn about any reviews about some Montreal bagel. A dump like this could have THREE really good bagels. But...it's still a dump (with employees to match, of which some can't even understand english).

I had a spinach/cheese pastry thing recently, the thing tasted lame. And it made me feel a little ill after. But regardless of even that, or the bad service, the absolute worst thing about Siegels.......the prices! ONE word...."LOL"!
I won't be going back there. Ever.
