Orale Tacos, Tamales and Deli1002 Johnson St., Victoria
Closest you get around here to Mexico
Submitted Thursday, April 30, 2009 - 1:43am [Dine in]

The flavours of Mexico actually CAN be brought to Victoria! Nice size portions for a shared snack or a meal, with good flavour, fresh salsas and homemade-tasting chips! After having lived in Mexico, I've been waiting for something that actually reminds me of the food there, and the Tamales and chips at Orale are as close as I've found yet in Victoria! Cafe Mexico is Tex Mex, Hernandez is good but not what I ate in Mexico. Orale obviously has taken some recipes straight out of Mexico- I go back as often as I can! Everyone there is nice and friendly and there is a very casual ambiance.

Even if you don't like Oysters
Submitted Thursday, April 30, 2009 - 1:20am [Dine in]

The presentation was beautiful, the sauces were great, and even if you don't like Oysters, there are many tasty options to try. I had mussels, and the flavour was subtle, but enjoyable. The chocolate dessert was superb. The ambiance was great, with not to much noise and just the right amount of light. The service was friendly and knowledgeable, and always there when we needed something. I would go again.

Not so much.

I went with a group of friends. It is evident that they assign a server of the opposite sex to the guests... which might make the server more tips but if you aren't superficial it won't make the restaurant a great rep or regular costumers. The food was.... food. Edible but not interesting. I suppose it is a good thing they have a downtown location. To loud, and not enough room between tables.

Dined at for convenience

Incidentally, I have gone to Boston Pizza only with good company, and perhaps that has improved on the food. Honestly though, the food was not bad. I've had some of the appetizers and pizzas and it is about as good as it sounds. Nothing spectacular, but not horrid either. If you are nearby and looking for a satisfactory meal, why not go? The service and the drinks weren't the best though. The server was hardly ever around and the drinks were too sweet.

Surprisingly good!

I didn't expect much and was treated with a great surprise of original flavours an beautiful presentation. The portions were small, it's true, but the flavour was amazing, and I left full. We tried the Menu sampler: the Green Curry was great, and the veggies had an excellent sauce. The Beef was good, but in small portions only, as it is permeated with oil. Overall, the food was great, the price was a little high, and the service was good: polite and friendly and there when you needed but not too often. The experience made my evening!

Great
Submitted Wednesday, May 16, 2007 - 1:24pm [Dine in]

Good food for good prices. I had an appetizer as an entree because I wasn't that hungry and that turned out to be a good idea considering a 7 dollar appetizer was a meal unto iteself and with the bread that comes complimentary to the meal, I was stuffed. The Drink and food came ontime and the ice cream afterwards was good, though I had room only for a taste. The Service was fast and there were smiles each time. I'll go again and I would recommend it to anyone, so long as they dont mind kids and a little noise...

Nice Location, Decoration and Ambiance
Submitted Wednesday, May 16, 2007 - 1:19pm [Dine in]

I went there twice over the last week and the level of service was quite standard. I would have prefered sitting a little more outside of the way of passing people but the seats are nice and the decorations are fine. There seems to be a lot of staff working for pretty general service. I noted that some of the hostesses were quite slow at clearing and setting tables after guests had left. They sat at the table and chatted while setting it rather slowly. I hope there wasn't a line up at the door... But in general the food was fine (a little spicy but good and depending on what I got it was ok) I had a really friendly server the first time I went and a nervous one the second time who seemed to be doing everything by the book. It's ok if you can't think of anything place more interesting or suited to your tastes.

Interesting Menu but a shrug in general
Submitted Wednesday, May 16, 2007 - 1:10pm [Dine in]

I went for a breakfast there and spent quite a bit of time looking at an extensive menu, but ended up choosing a basic Bacon, Eggs and Hash Browns meal. The price was a teeny bit higher than it had to be but not extreme. The Server was nice and prompt and very good at managing the whole restaurant for the short time I was in. The food was alight, nothing was bad about it and the fruit salad was fresh. A nice place with nice seating if you're looking to take your grandparents out or going for brunch with friends.

Nothing Special
Submitted Wednesday, May 16, 2007 - 1:05pm [Dine in]

I liked the way the food was put in price ranges on the menu. The food was alright but nothing special unless they happened to have the exact meal for your taste. Tons of Garlic which is not a bad thing in general but it might have been a little to much. The Noise level was high but the ambiance was alright. Like it says in the title: this place is nothing special but if its convenient for you then why not go? the service was fine and the server seemed nice enough and the food took an average time to arrive. A shrug but not an unhappy one as an overall reaction.

Casual
Submitted Wednesday, May 16, 2007 - 12:51pm [Dine in]

I really enjoyed relaxing and sitting at a window while chatting with my Guest at Cafe Mexico. The food came in good time and It was enough for me (I don't know what other reviewers have had or how much they can eat but I was quite full) I had "Tacos Mexicana" and they were great. Nice fresh tortillas and salad and nothing to hot. The service was great in general and the server was nice, and there was only one time when it took a little long to get an extra I ordered. I would recommend Café Mexico to any family, couple or casual Business occasion looking for a nice upbeat evening out.
