A Disappointing First Visit.
Submitted Sunday, December 1, 2013 - 10:53am [Dine in]

I don't know they have survived for 39 years. Tasteless humus, pita from the corner grocery store, greasy pakawra, oily and tasteless lentil soup, overcooked (dry) rice, tasteless salad. A mediocre lamb kebab was the highlight of my dinner. I've been passing this place by for 27 years but I'd read and heard so many rave reviews about it I decided to go. I'll wait another 27 before trying it again.

So I want to book a party of 8 and I have to do all your work for you and you still whine about it?
Submitted Sunday, May 27, 2012 - 6:19pm [Dine in]

I recently increased my party of 7 up to 8 at which point I discovered that I had hit a threshold at which 2 things occur: 1) There is an imposed 18% gratuity. OK fine. and 2) If we want to pay with any type of CARD then only ONE card can be used for the entire table. This is pretzel logic, the basis for which is that it will take the server too long to use the card terminal with 8 individual guests, but guess what? How often will 8 singles be at table? If there is only ONE couple then the number of transactions is still 7, a number at which you do not impose this rule. I have lunch at a restaurant every Friday and guess what? The owner has 3 debit/credit machines going full out on a high speed line (if you are on dial up Nuba then get with the 21st century technology). We are strongly advised to choose the set menu as it will "be easier for the kitchen" otherwise all of our meals may not arrive at the same time. WHAT kind of kitchen cannot put out 8 dishes simultaneously? Ok so we actually LIKE the set menu idea (most of us had been before and wanted to try something different). When our "Protein" arrives we are all treated like 9 year olds and asked if we remembered what protein we had ordered. WHAT? Trying to get a drink at Nuba is harder than trying to do so in Dubai during Ramadan. If our waitress is busy (forgot one order) and I go to the Bartender and ask for some drinks then all she has to do is make them and send them over, but instead she says she'll send over our waitress who is clearly too busy to take an order, or in one case, remember it. And finally, when we order desert we are told that we are expected to be gone in 15 minutes because they need the table. WHAT? Nobody mentioned this when I booked. I like to languish over Baclava (miniscule) and Port (only one kind) - so we all took our time and when finally out of there half an hour later, there was nobody waiting for our tables. Take aways from this experience Nuba? Don't impose rules that make no sense, upgrade your technology if you are using a dial up service for your card machines, don't treat your guests like children, improve the service, get the Bartender to be attentive to drink requests - that is her job.

An Update to my March Review
Submitted Thursday, May 26, 2011 - 11:04am [Dine in]

Bombay Bhel is Bombay Beat now. I'm still going there once a week for lunch. As for the recent negative reviews, I'm not surprised. Bombay Bhel was sold and the former management and staff were all gone by the end of March - very disappointing to many I'm sure as Ron and his crew were amazing. The new owners have a very high mark to reach. Weekly lunches post-sale were disappointing in ALL areas, but the food seems to have improved even if the service hasn't. Apparently the menu is meant to go under drastic reconstruction at the end of June because it is property of Bombay Bhel, the former parent company with 4 locations in Ontario. All we can do is wait and see. They haven't replaced any of the art on the walls which adds to the echo in the cavernous space. They did put in a TV though, which personally I abhor - eatertainment be damned, this is a restaurant not a sports bar! And if you guys are reading this, the tables for 2 are not large enough for anything but Thali, so please let me sit at a double table so I can spread out my a la carte lunch - the naan basket takes up most of the table by itself.

Zaccary's - Where Else?
Submitted Thursday, November 25, 2010 - 5:57pm [Delivery]

My wife introduced me to Zaccary's 7 years ago. At that time she had been buying pizzas from there for over 10 years. The pies are sublime. Once you have a favourite it is so hard to try something different. The Number 5 or Zaccary's Special is in our house about once a week. I love converting friends to Zaccary's - friends who order from fast food / junk food pizza places (you know the ones). They never go back. Yes Z's is a one man show, so as others have said you have to understand that. Find your nights. If there is a hockey game on choose another night or delivery can be quite long - or go pick it up yourself! If they tell you an hour, it's going to be an hour. If you want it faster then go elsewhere. But don't - because it is worth the wait. The delivery guys are great, I think, because they are delivering the best pizza in the city, and they love it too. We love you Zaccary's!!

Mediocre Food & Underwhelming Service
Submitted Saturday, March 28, 2009 - 12:04pm [Dine in]

Our first visit having decided to wait for them to get up to speed after opening. When we called to book we were told that there was a minimum charge if we were staying for the entertainment. Since we booked for 730 and the entertainment does not start until 930 it looks like we escaped the 15% extra charge that others have commented on.

There is no coat rack. I hate having to pile up hats, scarves and coats on an extra seat.

We were essentially ignored by the server. Was it because we were not dressed like so many Vancouver slobs and actually had attired for an occasion? Or because we were not Mediterranean in appearance? There was only one other table occupied when we arrived but it took forever just to get a plate of homous and some wine.

There was no paper towel in the men's room.

We would have ordered more homous and more wine before dinner but were never asked. I didn't think the entrees would ever arrive. When they did they were not overwhelming. It was food, with some spices on it. Mediterranean spices perhaps, but to use that as an excuse to refer to what were eating as Mediterranean Cuisine was an insult to the numerous restaurants serving the same kind of food, all over the world.

As dinner was ending I would have like some sweet tea, or dessert, or sparkling water, but our server continued to ignore us. So when we had all finished eating we just paid and left.

We will never return to, or recommend this restaurant.
