Vera's Burger Shack15989 108th Ave, Surrey
My new burger spot
Submitted Sunday, February 8, 2009 - 12:29pm [Dine in]

I have to say, I'm a bit of a hamburger junkie. I do like to spend time in LA, trying out In n Out, Tommy's, etc... the closest I have come to a decent 'fast food' type burger here is Fatburger. Until now. I had the Baja burger to go, and the burger was delish. Better than Fatburger! The bun was living large, the burger, so fresh, moist (but cooked) and the guac/banana peppers so tasty. I don't live in Surrey, so its a bit out of the way, but I do believe I'll swing by this place again! Congrats Vera's, for coming out on this side of the bridge!

An update
Submitted Monday, December 22, 2008 - 11:55am [Dine in]

So I lied. I said I wouldn't be back for a while. However, I did return. So their ratio for getting my order wrong was 4 out of 6 times. Then I went a 7th time, not for myself but to pick up something for my wife/daughter. Well... instead of any service at all, I got a rather confrontational franchisee. Soon as I walk up to the counter he says that they were going to close early because of the snow. I ask if they are still open then? He says yes they are. So I order butter chicken, and a kids teriyaki chicken. He says it will be 20 minutes, and then gives me the same sob story about how its just him and one other person. Usually they have seven people on Sunday evenings. I don't say anything, but I own a business nearby, and all seven of my staff showed up on time for their shifts without any issues. If you can't handle your restaurant without complaining to your customers, just shut it down! We don't come so that we can hear your whining! So I wait the '20 minutes' and in the meantime, someone else causes a ruckus cause hes been waiting 40 minutes but someone who ordered after him got served first. So that was rather tense, but again, the owner chose to be more confrontational than conciliatory. Finally I got my order at the 42 minute mark. There was no offer to comp it, or anything. For sure, I will not be back now. Some people shouldn't be in an owner/spokesperson type position if they can't handle their restaurant/staff/anger issues.

MMmmmmm
Submitted Saturday, November 29, 2008 - 1:04pm [Dine in]

;) COBS was an excellent choice to stop into. Cheesymite scrolls! Cheese and Pesto scrolls! San Francisco style sourdough that makes the junk you usually get in supermarkets/restaurants shrivel and die by comparison! MMmmmm I like you COBS Bread. Service always seems to be chipper and happy. ESPECIALLY for a chain. Their Pane bread is good as well.

Not too shabby
Submitted Saturday, November 29, 2008 - 12:57pm [Dine in]

I think Swiss Chalet is a decent value. I didn't have any problems with my pickup order. Actually, I just walked in and placed it and I got it fairly quickly. Service is alright, probably what you'd expect from a suburban chain. The chicken itself was fine. Fries were tasty. Salad was alright as well. Really, it was what it was supposed to be, unless you believe their commercials, then it would have been a letdown.

Ra Sushi20330 88 Avenue, Langley
Another good sushi spot in Walnut Grove
Submitted Saturday, November 29, 2008 - 12:46pm [Dine in]

We are blessed here in the Grove to have at least 6 sushi places now.

Ra Sushi is pretty good, I have been happy with everything I have had there. Yesterday I had Nigiri (Tako, or octopus) and it was not as chewy as most places are. I'll get it again! The spicy real crab dynamite roll could have been more spicy, but I guess I could wasabi'd it up a bit. Sticky rice was sticky and delicious. The owners are a husband and wife team, and are very friendly.

Walnut Grove gets a Kits style dining experience
Submitted Saturday, November 29, 2008 - 12:36pm [Dine in]

Been to Brown's now about 8 times. I know!!! Although its a franchise, I do feel it is more like a independent experience than all of Walnut Groves friendly safe chain restaurants. Its also a feeling of trendy Kits which is more than welcome.

I've ordered so may things now, I am not sure where to start. The spicy Kobe beef meatballs are delicious. The Hollywood burger is not too shabby. The lemongrass soup great! Key Lime Pie most tasty! The Social Lager is actually really good for a house beer and I usually get at least two. Also, please try their spicy pizza with soprassata and capicollo, so good!!

Service has been fine. I haven't had a bad experience there yet, which is surprising given how many times I've been.

I hope the fine folks of Walnut Grove keep supporting this venue.

Viva Mexico Restaurant Grill & Cantina20505 Fraser Highway, #103, Langley
A little underwhelmed
Submitted Thursday, April 17, 2008 - 7:19pm [Dine in]

Went there recently, on a Wednesday evening. There were about 14 patrons total. Got a Corona to start, and while it did have the requisite lime, it wasn't very cold for whatever reason. I ordered the Enchiladas de Mole Pablano. It was good, but didn't make a great impression. To be clear, this is solid, good Mexican food, but nothing earth shattering. Mole sauce can be tricky, but it was fine here. The other place about 6 stores away has better food...

What a great little find!
Submitted Thursday, March 20, 2008 - 12:00am [Dine in]

Was really pleased to stumble upon this little gem. Quite small seating area, and it does need to be spruced up ever so slightly. However, the food and service were really great. Its nice to see a server that wants to talk about the concept and the dishes etc, and actually knows what hes talking about. I had the prix fixed menu. So I chose Ricotta Gnocchi with Sablefish and Capers, Duck Confit, and a Pana Cotta with elderberries. $25! :) All three were really, really good! I'll return and show it off to friends. To be commended for using local ingredients!!

Coza! Tuscan Grill20065 Langley Bypass, Langley
A solid one time choice
Submitted Wednesday, March 19, 2008 - 3:23pm [Dine in]

I guess Coza is Cara Restaurants ltd latest theme or idea restaurant. I went recently and had a decent time. I ordered the chicken diavolo dish. It was in between not bad and good. The lemonade which is supposed to be hand made there was not very good, very very sweet. We had to add water to it for it to be drinkable. The decor is really nice, but its totally factored into the price of everything as the dishes are overpriced some. The open kitchen seems more for show, or perhaps if its really busy, as we only saw someone making sauces perhaps, the rest of the action was behind closed doors. Its the kind of place you would go to once to check it out, and its alright, but really you wouldn't go back unless you have limited imagination and don't like checking other local places out.

Not good enough
Submitted Thursday, December 20, 2007 - 11:47am [Dine in]

(I posted this review when the restaurant opened, it was deleted for containing links, I have removed them and am reposting)
Not good enoughWent in recently to this newly opened restaurant. Had the Double Chicken Breast entree. It came with asparagus, cherry tomatoes, and white cheddar mashed potatos. For being a grill, I expected the chicken to be a little darker, perhaps with some marks? It came unadorned, barely seasoned, just over that *is it cooked completely?* line with all of the fatty skin. Meh! When thats your main chicken dish on the menu, the best you have to offer, whats below it?And whats with not knowing what a Moscow Mule is?? Are none of you up and coming bartenders versed at all on classic drinks? The menu looked pricey for what you get, and there was no description of anything whatsoever on the menus (no telling what came with an entree, no description of any course etc..) And it seemed one looooooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnggggggggg techno song played the whole time we were there, so that was really annoying. Hope you guys get your act together, I had high hopes for this place before it opened...

La Masia19209 Fraser Highway, Surrey
Tapas bar was good
Submitted Saturday, December 15, 2007 - 12:58pm [Dine in]

My wife and I went to the Tapas Bar portion of La Masia recently. We were greeted and told we could sit anywhere. As we sat down, we were told we would be moved if a party of four came in and wanted that table, which I thought was odd, as there were lots of tables.... Anyways, we got our drinks, which were good, and started with the Ceviche. Very good! I'd get that again. We moved on to the Chorizo, then the beef de brochette, then the garlic fried chicken, then a stuffed pepper. The beef was ok, but I am not sure that it would be drizzled with teriyaki sauce in Spain. We had the caramel flan with peaches and ice cream for dessert, which I loved. I mostly had rum and cokes, but the Long Island Ice Tea I had, I had to send back, as it didn't taste like an LIIT I had ever had, and I've had a lot!! :) The whole Tapas bar smelled like cigarette smoke though, I don't know if it was from after hours stuff or what, but it was offputting.

Loved it!
Submitted Friday, December 7, 2007 - 5:00pm [Dine in]

Came here recently for an anniversary dinner. We came at night, so we didn't get to partake in the view I've heard so much about. And at one point a dog came running in, which a server corralled and took away. Other than that.... the food rocked! I had Sablefish and it was prepared in outstanding fashion. The little potato flour loaf they served ahead was also great! The drinks were so so, but I will go back to this restaurant, perhaps next summer and take in that view!!

Pretty impressed....
Submitted Friday, December 7, 2007 - 4:55pm [Dine in]

My wife and I ate here recently. I had the Jerusalem Artichoke and Duck Risotto, and she had the smoked chicken and romaine salad. Both were really great. My wife isn't used to organic and free range products, and couldn't get over how 'healthy', and 'clean' her meal tasted. I had a Moscow Mule to drink, the only establishment I've found to have this legendary drink. At $12 I thought too pricy, but I wasn't about to deny myself after looking for so long! Anyways, the only issue we had was the waitress was a 'quiet talker' we had a hard time hearing her. And we are in our thirties, not seniors with hearing aids! And the decor was pretty sparse.... I will come back for a dinner eventually....

Great decor, hollow service/food
Submitted Monday, July 30, 2007 - 5:12pm [Dine in]

I have been to Dublin Crossing 6 times now, and each time its the same thing... its gorgeous inside to be sure, but service is either very slow and lacking in all areas, or the food just doesn't live up to its billing. It then ends up a very underwhelming experience. And whats with the upstairs always being closed off, but you can't find seats downstairs? And please, no more "sorry, we're understaffed today" excuses, just do your job and try to do it well. I shouldn't hear that as a patron.

Our favorite Langley restaurant
Submitted Tuesday, January 30, 2007 - 9:32am [Dine in]

Been coming here for some time now, always good food, excellent portions, good prices, and the staff seems to be interested in you. Had the Mediterranean pasta last time, with an iced tea. The flavour combination is simply great. Our server was very attentive, providing us with the experience we enjoy in a restaurant. We'll be back, again and again!

Another good meal at Milestones
Submitted Tuesday, January 30, 2007 - 9:25am [Dine in]

I went 01-29-07, service was really good, food was good, drinks were fine. I had the Chicken Pesto Fettucini, and Roasted Garlic Caesar Salad to start. Sadly, the pesto sauce here contains cream, pesto should never be creamy. But it did taste good anyway. I like this location and come here once a month or so...

Good food/service, but too loud
Submitted Sunday, January 28, 2007 - 1:48pm [Dine in]

I like Montana's! I do! The food is good, and the service is good too. However, it is too loud (I don't like country music) and I am stunned by how many people go there for their birthdays! Having said that, I do recommend it heartily if those things don't bother you...

Good burgers, make sure they make them right
Submitted Sunday, January 28, 2007 - 1:45pm [Dine in]

I've been to Fatburger 5-10 times now since opening. I do enjoy the burgers a lot, they seem to be of good quality, and the chocolate shakes are GREAT. I usually get a King burger. However, about half the time my order is incorrect, which stops me from going more often. I like the food too much to stop going altogether. I like the old songs from the jukebox, and the place seems pretty clean as well...

Too cramped, too busy
Submitted Sunday, January 28, 2007 - 1:41pm [Dine in]

I have to start this review by saying the ambience needs to be changed in this restaurant. The tables are way too close together, I feel claustrophobic sitting there. I've been there three times now. Our first dinner, I ordered Chicken Parmesan, which came with a pasta. Mine came with grilled vegetables, when I told the server, she said, "No, thats what it comes with, and thats what you told me you wanted." So it was like, fine, I'll leave it here on my plate. Don't worry about it.... So, although obviously it was a mistake, she just ignored the large pile of vegetables and took my plate away eventually.
The wait at the front is usually too much, and it almost seems arbitrary who goes frist as I have seen people go in in varying order regardless of arrival time and party size.

Skipping this restaurant for the forseeable future
Submitted Sunday, January 28, 2007 - 1:34pm [Dine in]

With all the new restaurants in Walnut Grove, do yourself a favour and give this one a skip. We ended up with one truly awful experience, and the makeup experience (were sent gift certificates) was not awful, but certainly not enough to make me go back. To quickly summarize:
Were not seated for far too long, despite plenty of empty tables, no one would explain why.
4 girls at the front desk, mostly concerned with their shirts/hair/appearance than any customers.
Food orders took far too long to arrive, two of the four were wrong.
One of the alcoholic drinks had no alcohol.
Wouldn't come around to fill the non-alcoholic drinks up.

Meh. There was more, but thats enough for now.

The follow up trip had poor attitude from the server, and another food screwup....
