Great Hail Mary Cocktail. OK Food
Submitted Thursday, November 27, 2008 - 12:48pm [Dine in]

Pretty empty on a clear Tuesday night. Had a few Hail Marys. These are basically a bloody ceasar with tequila. They do a very nice job making these. I had 3.

We ordered some guocamole and black bean dip which was tasty. Honestly I can't even remember what we ate for diner. It was pretty below average. There were beans, cheese and soft taco shells. There really wasn't much to it.

The nice server recommended a sipping tequila for my gf. She enjoyed the flavour and experience.

I've been here a few times and its usually the same. This restaurant toys with the idea of being better than average. Most of the time it fails.

Commercial Drive really needs a restaurant that delivers an all-together fantastic product. No one has opened one yet. Someone please open a really great restaurant on the Drive. People have money and are willing to part with it if you offer something special.

Wow...that was good!!!
Submitted Tuesday, December 4, 2007 - 9:47pm [Dine in]

From the people greeting us at the door to the valet person hailing us a cab on our way home...top notch!!!

I love how simple this place is. 5 whites wines, 5 reds, five appys, 5 mains...so perfect. Give me what I want and don't make it too complicated. Truly an excellent philosophy.

They (our server and the manager) paired our wines and food with the knowledge of a master of wine.

The food was great. The portions were perfect to keep to yourself our share with a loved one. I wish I could have tried everything. The ling cod with pork belly really stands out as a winner. The lentils were out of this world.

I wish I could say I'd be back every week. But in Vancouver...So many restaurants, so little time.

Tres bon!!!

Rum it is then...

I've eaten at the Reef maybe once a year since it has been open. I like it, but like many restaurants it smells heavily of mediocrity. I mean the Johnny cakes are wonderful, but the other food tends to be somewhat bland. I guess I'm just hard to please.

My wife had the mahi-mahi. I tried some and it was at little overcooked, but tasty. The mussles were done quite well in a creamy sauce. (Don't ever go Stella's for mussles!) I didn't really like my fish and chips. I knew it wasn't the traditional style but, like I said earlier, it was really bland. You get chips, real chips, not fries, potato chips. Blah.

Our server was friendly enough. It was pretty busy, but she did a decent job keeping up. Some dufus was yelling loudly behind me for most of our meal so I can't really give an accurate rating for ambiance. I did find it pretty loud. What is it with restaurants and the noise? So many restaurants pump up the volume so high!

So. I might go back. I might not. I like the selection of rums. So maybe for a drink, but not a meal.

Great beer, lame food.
Submitted Monday, July 30, 2007 - 5:34pm [Dine in]

Let me begin by saying that I am a restaurant manager at a fairly polular seafood restaurant.

On my last visit to Stella's on Commercial Drive I was very unhappy with the food that came to the table. The mussles were totally overcoooked and smelled horrid. I expected much more from a Belgian restaurant. When I order mussles I expect them to be plump, juicy and swimming in a wonderful broth. Not so good. I dod however enjoy the mushrooms in blue cheese.

We then ordered a bocichini salad and a lobster dip. One beer, two beer's later our server let's us know the kitchen is busy and our food would arive shortly. Nope. We waited 45 minutes for the salad. I actually had time to go to the video store and pick out a movie. When the salad did finally arrive it was decent. Shortly thereafter our lobster dip arrived. Please never order this dish. It was just plain awful. Stale chips placed around what looked like a vomitous mas of blah.

Great beer selection. Not worth your time or money. I will certainly not go back to this restaurant.
