Not Overly Impressed
Submitted Thursday, September 23, 2010 - 6:11am [Delivery]

I've ordered from this spot a few times over the years and will not ever again. I guess I've usually ordered when I was desperate, hung over or whatever. The quality reminds me of places in Chinatown where you choose 2 or three items and get a load of rice...except you get way less! I ordered a veg dish, fried ride and lettuce wraps. We hardly had any left overs the next day and with a modest tip it cost over $40.

Like I said the portion of rice was very small compared to what other places serve. They did give us lots of lettuce. And the driver found our home in no time flat.

Never again. Why are these people still in business after all these years?

thanks

Good Solid Food Service Etc...
Submitted Sunday, July 11, 2010 - 9:07pm [Dine in]

I've been to Indonesia a number of times and like the food. Someone told me this restaurant has better food than Bali. Ok so that's a bit of a stretch, but the food was solid as my rating indicates. Indonesia is a wonderful holiday for adventure, sun and cuisine if anyone cares. I love it.

The people in this spot were genuinely nice. It's actually called Balilicious now. It's a little tight and doesn't have many tables. Our dinner came to under $50. We had 2 small appies, 6 satay, one salad, one entree, a beer and a pop.

I might be back. But Sweet Chilli is closer and the food is better. Sorry it is.

The men wear traditional Indonesian festive outfits which is cool. Nice touch!

Seriously give this place a pass.

We recently had our staff party at this establishment. It looks like it could have been a decent looking place 25 years ago. We had a huge reservation. We were herded like cattle to the slaughter. Some drinks in the holding area before being sat around the communal table...late. No big deal. What is a big deal is the way the servers acted like zombies. No cheerful greeting, smiles or anything of that sort. Yes, they were young attractive ladies. But they didn't seem like they wanted to help us in any way or even really be there. They just floated through the meal looking perplexed. We spent over $5000. But that's not the point. I can't imagine how many out of town groups have wasted their $ on this Japanese restaurant. They have it down to a science. Get em in. Take as much $ as possible. Get em out. Never see em again.

Oh by the way. The food is OK and overpriced.

Thanks for the memories Kobe!

I work late nights. I often don't get to eat diner and I am very hungry at around 1am. This little joint always has fresh delicious pizza by the slice. At $1.75/slice its a really good deal. I used to live near Pizza Garden near Venables and this Pizza is much better and seems fresher. I've tried to tell them how much I like their pizza compared to other spots. They don't care...next!!!

Great Authentic Indonesian Eats on the Cheap
Submitted Saturday, December 26, 2009 - 8:36am [Dine in]

I have been to Indonesia a number of times and love the food. Let me say , while I was eating at this very tiny, little hole in the wall I said this to my wife..." Close your eyes and you can imagine you are in Ubud." Ubud has some of the best food in Bali. That's a compliment to the restaurant. The food is good and fresh. There is no booze. There are only a few seats. The food is better than a lot of the food I've eaten in Asia. The cooks know their stuff.

We were the only table on a Friday evening. The owner was very hospitable and interested in chatting. The food was spectacular! Will go back again and again. Try the Gado-Gado and the Fried Tempe.

Cheers

Breakfast Heaven
Submitted Thursday, December 10, 2009 - 10:40am [Dine in]

Breakfast is my favourite meal. This place has it all for breakfast lovers. They keep it simple to keep it cheap. It's a room with old tables, chairs and a smallish kitchen. When I arrived at 11am on a Saturday it was full. I was quickly offered a table after a few minutes. The staff made me feel welcome rather than a nuisance at this busy breakfast hour. They menu gives you an almost overwhelming choice of breakfast delites all on the cheap.

The coffee is good and refilled often. This place is actually worth the trip even if you don't live near Main.

Werd. Oh Yeah and its full of hipsters so wear your skinny jeans. Haha Lol.

Great Music on a Thursday Night! Food, meh
Submitted Tuesday, November 17, 2009 - 4:23pm [Dine in]

Arrived later on a thursday evening. There were some DJs just setting up. Apparently they have pro DJs every thursday night. Rockin music. I will go back for it alone.

The service is some of the best I have ever experienced. They are friendly and welcoming to a point where you think they might actually walk you to your car, drive you home and run the bath while making coffee. Sorry, the food is very average and too pricey. Brown rice sushi? Don't like it.

Very cool room. Nice people. Shame about the food.

Go on a Thursday Night! Do it.

Always Top Quality Pizza!!!
Submitted Tuesday, September 8, 2009 - 10:58am [Dine in]

I have been ordering pizza from Sunrise for the past 10 years. I thought it was about time I gave them some respect.

I have tried pizza from all the big corporate joints like Panago, the Hut, Dominos etc etc... Not only are they consistently of lesser quality but they cost at least $5 more per large pie. Why, if you live anywhere near Sunrise, would you not order from them?

The crust is nice and thick and yummy. They give you oodles of tasty cheese. They pile up every pizza with toppings. Oh yeah! I just had one last night and finished it off for breakfast.

I will never order pizza from another restaurant as long as they are in business.

They don't waste money on making the place look beautiful. I mean its clean and looks like a classic pizza joint. Damn Im getting hungry.

Do it today. You wont be sorry.

...and no, I dont work for them. I know there are a lot of phony reviews on this web-site. Mostly for Pho and Shusi places.

Second Time Not a Charm
Submitted Monday, August 31, 2009 - 9:55am [Dine in]

Called earlier in the day and was given the choice of two reservation times. Understandable for a busy restaurant. Whoever answered certainly had good phone manners. Not common these days.

Was sat right next to the bathroom way back in the bowels of the place. I guess that's just the luck of the draw.

The food was just OK. No wow factor. My wife has made better French Onion Soup. The duck off the menu was dry and small. My wifes chicken of the menu was average. The pate, however, is wonderful. My lemon tart was also superb.

The service was ok. They waited quite awhile to aknowledge us. No one checked on us after the food was delivered. Had to ask for a number of things that should have been offered.

The prices are low. But how can one give a good value rating to something that they didn't really enjoy very much?

I'll give them another one more chance. This time I will get an earlier reservation.

Loved My First Time Here!
Submitted Thursday, July 9, 2009 - 12:47pm [Dine in]

I'm usually a person who likes a good pile of bacon with my eggs and toast. This little gem on Commercial can change all that me thinks.

We were greeted with a sincere and warm smile. There are many tasty sounding items to chose from on the brunch menu. I had the Hill's Benny and my lady had the huevas rancheros. Both were lovely.

Our coffees were refilled often and our food came promptly.

Good Job Guys!!!

Worth the Trip...
Submitted Friday, April 3, 2009 - 9:46pm [Dine in]

Just came back from a Friday diner at this little east-side gem. We ate two LARGE appies, 4 glasses of cava and a huge shared entree all for way under $100. That's pretty fabulous.

The food was most certainly the highlight of this Main St. excursion. We ate a shared seafood platter, duck salad and the pork dinner. Each was fantastic in its own way. The pork was just out of this world. The duck salad was super-fan-tabulous. Maybe a dessert next time.

The service was alright. The two girls were efficient if not a little uninterseted. I guess I like a little banter...whatevs. There seemed to be an overall lack of order. No serious complaints.

Like I said...diner for two + a good bubbly buzz all for well under $100. Yep.

Ambiance - This restaurant has none. Go with people who make you happy.

Overall - Loved the food. Service was OK. Value was great. No ambiance. The wine list in this place is pretty basic. If you like pairing fab food with fab wine you will be very disappointed. Lame wine list. Until it improves bubbles will do fine.

Do it.

I wanted to love this place...
Submitted Friday, March 13, 2009 - 9:37am [Dine in]

Living on Commercial Drive for most of my adult life I've always been curious about this spot. When a friend wanted to have her birthday here, though wary, I jumped at the oppourtunity.

I will be brutally honest and lay it out for you. This was a Saturday if that makes any difference.

Food - This is some of the worst restaurant food I have ever had. We had a few slices of salami and olives as a starter. The main was canelloni with veal. Not impressed. I can't even decribe what we had for dessert.

Serivce - It took quite awhile for a server to take our first drink order. After that they were not bad. They filled our water and took away our plates when we were finished. Solid.

Value - Our crappy food cost us $50 + tax + automatic gratuity. To be fair it did include some comical if not sad entertainment.

Ambiance - Many people crammed into a room. The fact I was surrounded by friends was the only saving grace.

I wanted so much to love this place. I will never be back. Beware!

Not Living up to Potential
Submitted Saturday, March 7, 2009 - 8:09pm [Dine in]

How can you call yourself a wine bar when you have only 4 reds and 4 whites by the glass. The wines they do have by the glass are LAME! Someone with good intentions who obviously knows sweet dick about wine put this list together. I was really hoping to sit at the bar and enjoy a few glasses of quality wine. The French they were pouring wasn't even an AOC wine. Enough wine snobbery from me.

Had some cheese and bread. That was OK. I had a nice conversation with the barman. Don't get me wrong, they have some stellar wines by the bottle. This place lacks direction big time.

It's not to late to get it together.

Good Luck

What's the Big Deal?
Submitted Thursday, March 5, 2009 - 12:32am [Dine in]

What's the deal? What's up with all the good reviews? Did I order all the wrong things? Did I go to the wrong place?

We we nicely greeted and taken to our table in this darkly lit room. We ordered the flower shaped chicken dumplings, pad thai, a papaya salad and the crying tiger beef. Two were recommended by an article in a magazine.

The dumplings were indeed flower shaped. They were also gelatanous globs of ground beef-like ?chicken? or something. We didn't even fininsh them. The salad was the best part of the meal. You'd think a Thai restaurant could do a good pad thai...nope, bad. The beef was fine. It was basically a steak with a lime/chili water dip. It was not I expected at all.

I wanted so much to like this place as I love Thailand. If you like Thai food I would avoid this place at all costs. There are other better places for Thai food. Oh, my coke tasted funny as well.

Go to Thailand.

So very...average
Submitted Thursday, March 5, 2009 - 12:17am [Dine in]

Yeah, I know. What was I expecting? A little more, I guess.

5 of us dined this evening. We were first told by the hostess that it would be quite a wait, but she couldn't tell us how long. We decided to wait a few minutes and see what happend. We were seated immediately. Strange.

Got a great booth. Very comfy. We ordered a few things to share. We had ahi tacos, lettuce wrap and dumplings. All were OK.

I ordered the lobster grilled cheese. This was grilled cheese period. Grilled cheese for $15. Silly me. It actually came 10 minutes after everyone else's food. I got no apology or explanation. I guess our server felt silly because she had already forgotten a few thinngs. I am pretty easy when it comes to sevice, but this kinda annoyed me.

I guess the formula works. Young sexy girls + average food + alcohol = profit. They did seem to have a well thought out wine system. I will give them some credit.

Save your tips girls.

Submitted Friday, February 20, 2009 - 1:11am [Dine in]

I always have high hopes when deciding on Havana. It's always the same.

Friendly service.

Nice patio.

Disappointing food.

My crunchy chicken sandwich cost $13. Add another $2.50 for the yam-fries and the McChicken Sandwich i just ate cost just a little too much.

But you got to give it to the Havana patio. People waching doesn't get any better than this...unless you have magical powers to become invisible.

And you can always count on some dude to be smoking a joint just within smelling distance.

Next time I'll just have some beverages.

Werd Out.

Why is this Restaurant still there?
Submitted Saturday, February 14, 2009 - 3:36pm [Dine in]

I've given these folks a couple chances over the years. The food has never been very good. In fact it's down right pitiful. I've never been to Mexico, but I'd be unimpressed even at an all-you-can eat buffet if this kind of food was served.

I don't know why they have won awards and been open for so long. I guess, again, people are just so used to crappy food on Commercial. Even the Margaritas were below average.

Both my girlfriend and myself felt unwell quite soon after our visit. We both had upset stomachs.

Please dine elsewhere.

Fets Left Me Feeling Satiated
Submitted Friday, February 6, 2009 - 9:44pm [Dine in]

I'd been craving a really good burger for awhile. In fact, I started making mental plans around 72 hours before I ordered my burger at Fets. "I am gonna order a burger at Fets...and it's going to be awsome!" That's the thought that kept running through my mind.

I ordered the classic burger. I was all i could have asked for. De-freakin-licious! Honestly I don't know why one would go anywhere else on the drive for a burger.

The service was prompt, friendly and attentive. Perfecto. We were also treated to a nice converstaion with the lovely owner.

I am already looking forward to my next visit. I'm thinking JAMBALAYA. Hmmmm...

Go Fets!

Really Great Chowders
Submitted Saturday, December 27, 2008 - 3:50pm [Dine in]

I recently stopped by Rodney's on a cold winter day. My daughter and I had a couple "New England" chowders and some Panfried Oysters. The chowders were hot and hearty and the cooked oysters were lovely if not unique.

We sat at the bar which seems the place to be. The chairs are perfect height to be able to absorb the room while enjoying the banter of your neighbour or the handsome barmen.

It was lunchtime and maybe half full, but our food came promptly. Even though our lunch was put on pause a few times by some rather odd humour I would go back in a flash.

Keep it up.

Are those Hash Browns?
Submitted Saturday, December 27, 2008 - 11:50am [Dine in]

Went to this Restaurant for breakfast quite some time ago. I haven't been back since. The reason is mainly because of the hashbrowns. To me hashbrowns are a very important part of the meal. Thses came in a little bowl and looked like frozen/canned corn. The tasted not-so-good.

The ambiance is kinda odd. There are autographed pictures of people who might have or might have not been slightly famous at some point in the last 50 years. I think I saw Richard Grieco...or maybe not.

What is cool is that they have many different kinds of bread to choose from.

But honestly the prices are pretty high for what you get. I guess they are on the edge of Yaletown and maybe most people don't care. There are few places, if any, to get a good reasonably priced breakfast in Yaletown.
