with big portions and a free refill for your drink it was pretty good deal. i was just annoyed with the service because the waitress misunderstood our order. my pet peeve is the fact that her english wasn't very good so she wasn't able to understand what was being ordered and when we tried to explain, she still couldn't get it until finally one of friends who speaks chinese helped translate. she was apologetic though.

Good Curries
Submitted Sunday, October 12, 2008 - 12:02am [Dine in]

I went there for the first time last week with a couple of girlfriends. We ordered the following:

lettuce wrap:
very flavourful but there was more crispy fried rice noodle than actual chicken meat.

green chicken curry:
nice hit of spice, creamy and good amount of meat in the dish.

beef matsaman:
mmmm....delicious! it's not bland and watered and NOT mixed with veggies to make it look it's a big portion. I would have loved more peanuts and a thicker sauce though.

deep fried bananas with vanilla ice cream:
it was just ok. the batter that coated the bananas tasted a bit bland.

we also had a bottle of red wine and about 3 cocktails ( the pattaya delight is yummy!).

over all we were impressed with the food and the service. the bill came up to $42/ person which included tax and tip. wasn't bad because we had appetizer, 2 entrees, dessert and alcoholic drinks.

i liked it so much i went back the next day for dinner and brought my sister along. we had:

traditional pad thai which had a good amount of seafood and the flavourl was great. we also ordered the deep fried tofu with peanut sauce. i found the tofu needed some seasoning to it but the peanut sauce was good. this time for the 2 of us we only spent $15/person tax and tip included.

Bland Massaman Curry
Submitted Sunday, October 5, 2008 - 3:50pm [Dine in]

Massaman or some places spell it Matsaman is my favourite Thai curry. I was so excited when I saw that they have it on the menu. I ordered it as a lunch combo which came with soup and rice. I say the protions were dicent for under $10 bucks.

The place looks really nice and the service was really good. I was disappointed with the curry though as it tasted watered down and a bit bland. I was actually wanting to ask for some fish sauce. It had a fair amount of meat though and not just sauce/broth. I also ordered the Thai iced tea which was a bit too sweet.

Maybe I'll give this place another try and order something else next time.

I love the ambiance and the food. The service was alright. The items i tried on the menu are chikukwa cheese, agedashi tofu topped with spicy calamari, red ocean sushi. I'm looking forward to going back and trying other thigns on the menu. My only complaint is the price. It's a little bit expensive for the portions that you get.

I only like the ambiance

I went there a while back with a friend from out of town. The service was decent but then again they had just opened for dinner and so there were not a lot of people. The food we ordered tasted good but nothing to write home about. The portions were so small for the price. We were actually laughing at the asparagus that was served with my husband's entree. I think it was the smallest aspapragus I've ever seen in my entire life! It was the size of my pinky finger.
There are other places to dine on Robson where the food is good, the ambiance is great and the portions are decent.
I'll never go back.

I'm impressed!
Submitted Tuesday, June 3, 2008 - 6:16pm [Dine in]

I was there for lunch 2 weeks ago and I was very impressed firdst of all by the food and the service. We had to wait a bit for a table because it was busy but it was worth it.

The portions were very generous and the food was delicious! I also like the fact that they had a varied menu with lots to choose from.

I was impressed by the service because from my experience if I go to a Chinese restaurant the food may be good but the service sucks. Usually the servers don't know how to speak English very well and they pretty much give you your order and that's it.

This was not the case at Happy Valley. They gladly and politely answered any of our questions, refilled our water glasses promptly and the food came right away, hot and fresh from the kitchen.

It was a good experience and I can't wait to go and have lunch there again.

for $15 for all you can eat is pretty good deal. the place was clean and i love the broth for the hotpot. the service was prompt and polite. i liked the ambiance. i think it would be a pretty cool place to bring someone who hasn't had sukiyaki before. i would not order their cocktails again tho because they were just ok and overpriced for what they are. other than that, i will go back there again.

Go For the Humba
Submitted Tuesday, May 20, 2008 - 8:49pm [Dine in]

I'm from Saskatchewan and in the city that I live in, we do not have a Filipino restaurant so when I visited Vancouver my family took me to Sandy's. I was there with my family for the first time this weekend and I was impressed with the food. The dishes that we tried were laing, diniguan, caldereta, bopiz, tortang talong, pandan chicken and humba.

All the dishses that we ordered were seasoned well. None of them were too bland or too salty which is a usual for the run of the mill pinoy restaurants. I had humba for the first time and loved it! The pork was tender and braised in bay leaves, star anise and other spices. I also loved their pandan chicken which was very falvourful altough a tad well done. The rest of the dishes were alright and tasted like typical Pinoy fare. Definitely will go back for the humba and will recommend it Sandy's to my pinoy friends who visit Vancouver.

Will definitely go back
Submitted Tuesday, May 20, 2008 - 8:31pm [Dine in]

I ate at Wilbur and Sebastian's with my hubby for the first time today. The portions were good, the service was prompt and the food was fresh and delicious! My hubby had the Penne with Chorizo and every other spoonful he kept saying, "this is so good!" I asked the chef/owner about the sauce for the pasta and she told me she makes it in house from roasted tomatoes. I had the Chili which had just the perfect combination of meat, beans and spices. The fresh chopped cilantro on top added a fresh burst of flavour which really complimented the chili. For dessert we had the Hazelnut Chocolate Cheesecake which was creamy and rich and just had the right touch of sweetness.

It was a wonderful meal. I'm looking forward to going back so that I can try their Beef Short rib Mechado and the Braised Lamb Shank.

What a Great Dinner!
Submitted Tuesday, March 20, 2007 - 12:58pm [Dine in]

I had my small and private reception there. There were 22 of us when we had dinner at Samba's. I had my close family and friends with me. We had the private room and it was nicely decorated. Out of the 22 people that came 18 of them haven't been there before. They were all impressed. They loved the variety of choices from the hot buffet especially for my guests who didn't eat that much red meat. For the meat eaters they loved the different varieties of meat. They were excited to try buffallo and ostritch.

We all enjoyed the entertainment as well. Since we were off in the room the Brazilain Dancers came in and danced for us. We even took pictures with them. Some of my guests even danced a little bit on the dance floor accompanied by the live band.

The meats came slow at first but when we brought it to the attention of one of the wait staff it just kept on coming. The service that night was great. Our server was very accomodating and helpful getting the wedding cake ready and all.

When the night ended everyone left happy and satisfied.
