Il Giardino1382 Hornby St, Vancouver
One of my favorite restaurants!
Submitted Friday, October 20, 2006 - 12:53pm [Dine in]

This is our "date night" restaurant because we have never (and don't expect to be) disappointed by the food, service, or ambiance. My husband and I came during Dine Out and lowered our expectations somewhat as we thought they might skimp on food quality or service, like some other restaurants do--but everything was still excellent! The servers and their helpers are rather busy at times so your water and bread may take a while, and the decor inside could do with a bit of freshening up, but nevertheless, we will be going to Il Giardino again and again!

Gone downhill...
Submitted Thursday, October 19, 2006 - 5:13pm [Dine in]

This past dinner experience was truly disappointing. We had never thought this restaurant deserved it's rave reviews, but it was above-average--but not anymore. This is yet another restaurant living off of it's (past) reputation, hype, and location. The service was friendly but unprofessional (e.g. our server and busser looked and acted like students at their part-time job), rather odd for an "upscale" restaurant. Our entrees were decent (rack of lamb, fish, pasta, vegetarian plate), but the desserts were awful (lemon tarts and cheesecake). Don't think this would be the ideal place to take a date...more of a place for a dinner with friends or family from out of town who would enjoy the location.

Worth a try
Submitted Wednesday, October 18, 2006 - 3:08pm [Dine in]

We have enjoyed dining here a few times over the past 2 years. There is no restaurant like Also in Richmond, and it is worth a try. The food is excellent. I would have given the restaurant better ratings in other areas if it was based on effort, but the execution is wanting. The servers are friendly but poorly trained. The ambiance is better now that they have changed the rickety wooden chairs, and the other minor changes have made it a warmer feeling room. The women's restrooms, on 2 occasions, did not have any handsoap! The live jazz adds to the fun. The soups are delicious, as well as the duck anise and lobster spaghettini.

It's the hype
Submitted Wednesday, October 18, 2006 - 2:02pm [Dine in]

I agree with the previous reviewers who found this restaurant "just OK". The service was excellent, but that was the only thing I found above-average. The food was rather bland and tasteless despite all that had been done to it. The decor was also puzzling and left me wondering what they were trying to achieve. I had the chef's tasting menu and my husband had an appetizer and entree. Our server timed everything perfectly and had excellent wine recommendations. Probably somewhere you want to take a date or someone else you want to impress, because of the excellent service, and of course, because of all the hype. But don't expect delicious food.

Thai House Restaurant4940 No. 3 Road, #129, Richmond
perhaps it was a bad night...
Submitted Friday, September 8, 2006 - 5:11pm [Dine in]

Ironically, I ordered the pineapple fried rice yesterday evening, and the chef forgot the pineapple altogether. We ordered 3 items of takeout and when we arrived around 6:30pm, the restaurant was virtually empty.

It was my first time at this location. I have had great meals at the Burrard and Robson restaurants, though.

Upon entering the restaurant, we noticed the decor was sadly outdated and very dimly lit. The servers who greeted us were pleasant.

When we got home and opened up the food, we noticed we did not get rice with the red curry we ordered. Ok, I could live with that. Then, we realized that the chef had put in a lot of semi-rancid peanuts into our pineapple fried rice, but not a sliver of pineapple was to be found! Come on, the place was empty yet the chef made such an elementary mistake when! The red curry was just OK, and the pad thai was very blah.

I would recommend the other Thai House locations but not this Richmond one!

Always great food & service
Submitted Tuesday, August 29, 2006 - 6:53pm [Dine in]

I visited Oysi Oysi last week and happily discovered that they have re-vamped their menu. Their tuna sashimi is fantastic. As is their inventive and varied selection of rolls and appetizers (cooked). My food is consistently excellent.

I always have wonderful service from the owners and their long-time servers. I agree that sometimes their service is a little inconsistent, but on the whole, better than average. And you can't beat the prices.

This restaurant is definitlely worth a try.

Yummy dinner--just don't order dessert
Submitted Tuesday, August 22, 2006 - 5:48pm [Dine in]

The food was really really delicious. I somewhat agree with previous reviewers that it is a wee pricey for a restaurant in that location with that kind of decor...but the prices were tolerable. EXCEPT for the dessert.

We ordered the fried banana--tasty but way over-priced for the serving size; as well as two different ice creams. Each of the ice creams was about $5.50, so we expected a little oomph other than ice cream. Well, to our surprise, our $5.50 got us 1 single scoop of ice cream plopped in the middle of the dish. Not impressed.

Do try the food, but don't order any dessert!

(The service is a little frustrating and decor leaving something to be desired, so this shouldn't be your "first-date" restaurant.)

Good food, bad service
Submitted Tuesday, August 22, 2006 - 5:37pm [Dine in]

Even though the food was quite tasty, I would not go back because of the poor service. There are a lot (!) of good restaurants in Richmond so I don't think patrons should have to deal with snarky waiters, a host that doesn't "honor" the reservations that have been made (in favour of patrons who they know that just showed up), and waitresses that look like it is an onerous chore to serve you.

My friends who went with my husband and I to dine are not high-maintenance so please don't take this review in that light :) This is just one of those Chinese restaurants in Richmond that give Chinese restaurants in Richmond a bad name!

Lupo Cafe1014 West Georgia Street, Vancouver
Waste of time and money
Submitted Tuesday, August 22, 2006 - 5:23pm [Dine in]

A high-school cafeteria would serve better food. The food quality and preparation was poor; adding insult to injury, the service couldn't get worse. Yet, I had to pay premium prices because I had to grab a quick lunch.

Ordering was an ordeal. The surly "manager" looked greasy and unhappy that more customers were coming in. Another "employee", female, who looked like she was ready to go to a wedding and inappropirately attired to be working at a restaurant, was equally non-chalant about serving customers. A young lady that finally came to help me finally was the only friendly person I encountered. I finally ordered from her, and when she gave me my food, the "manager" had the nerve to shoot her a dirty look and growl to her that I had not paid yet--it wasn't even her fault since he and the other "employee" had already "encountered" me. I use the word "encounter" because they certainly did not help me.

I ended paying about $10 for a soup and "caesar salad wrap with serrano ham."

This is what I really got: a humongous wrap bread with some left-over caesar salad that contained a few bits of unappetizingly shredded bits of ham. The "mushroom soup" was lukewarm and lumpy--yes, like when you dump out a can of Campbell's cream of mushroom soup and then didn't bother to stir it up.

This location used to be run by different owners, under another name. That was a great establishment.

Don't bother going to Lupo. They should pay the patrons for eating there.
