First the good: I like the muffins (though the blackberry bran is tasteless), and the coffee is definitely better than many places in the area. I like the decor, which is comfortable and a pleasant place to read, relax, and people watch.
The bad? The coffee is always lukewarm. If you let your coffee sit for more than 5 minutes, it will be cold. Perhaps this is their policy so that people won't linger long without buying more? Also, the staff are generally surly and aloof. The place is far from spotless, but you're more likely to see the staff chatting amongst themselves behind the counter than clearing tables, wiping the counter, and the like.
This isn't hurting business, however, as the place is always busy. But more and more locals are getting fed up with JJ Bean, and heading up the road to Bean Around the World (at Main and 20th). Better coffee, better service, and better food.

I live nearby and thought I'd try this place for lunch. Ordered the chicken congee. I received my food pretty quickly. However, it was terrible: chunks of gristle, cartlige, and bone suspended in thick porridge with no meat whatsoever. A few very tough and rubbery mushrooms were all that was close to edible. I've eaten at dodgy restaurants throughout South and Southeast Asia, and this was the first meal I simply couldn't eat. I tried ... but after 1/4 bowl I was near gagging.
By the time I left (just after noon) the place was packed, so I'm guessing that there are other dishes on the menu that are edible. I won't be coming back, however.
The place is very inexpensive, but one of the worst meals I've ever tasted.
