Fast and furious - and RUDE!

Many a Chinese restaurant have been re-hashed at this same location over the years, with Venice Garden being the latest reincarnation. As with its predecessors, food quality and value have always been pretty decent. However, on my last couple of visits within the last few months, service seems to have worsened. It hasn't been the speed of service - they are usually pretty fast and everything is made to order. It is the RUDENESS of the staff which really stands out. On both occasions, we were seated rather promptly, each time at a table which was just cleaned and/or needed place settings.

After we were seated, one of the servers would just come by and hastily SLAM DOWN place settings on the table before rushing off to their next table or order. When the food arrived (usually quite quickly), it wasn't slammed down like the place settings but they didn't waste much time, either. When we asked for the bill, there was no response, just a nod and the bill being slapped on our table a minute later. Guess they live by the "get 'em in, get 'em out" rule.

Not the same as before

I think this restaurant underwent a change in ownership in recent times. It used to be owned and operated by a couple of Japanese folks who provided friendly service and very decent food. Now it seems like it was sold to a Chinese family who just want to pass time. I stopped in a couple of weeks ago and had one of their lunch specials (a sushi combo, I believe). Sushi was ok, usual quality when made by non-Japanese (e.g. Chinese or Korean, like many sushi places in town these days). The server's attitude really soured when she realized that all I was ordering was the special and nothing else. When I went to pay the bill, she seemed so insulted and upset, she didn't even make eye contact.

No way to treat a 'brother'

A few weeks back, I dropped by to grab an order of steamed rice. I was on my way home from work and in a rush to make some congee (a form of Chinese rice porridge) for my little two-yr old daughter, who wasn't feeling well. I figured that, to speed things up, I would just grab some rice and go home and make the congee myself.

The second I walked in the door, the lady behind the counter gives me a dirty look, and blurts out the English translation of, "oh, hi, stupid fat guy" (sai fai jai, in Cantonese). Right away, things were off to a bad start. It was like she recognized or knew me, but I had never set foot in the place before (though my wife has picked up takeout from there before). She didn't become any more impressed when all I ordered was a side of steamed rice. She continues muttering some choice words in Cantonese (stuff like, 'hey, all this goof is ordering is rice, he doesn't even need anything to go with it', etc, etc). I was PAYING for the piddly little order of rice, not like I was scrounging for a free meal. Perhaps she just found it insulting.

On my way out, I thanked her in Cantonese (as she seemed to think I was just another Cdn-bred Chinaman who couldn't speak the native language). Thinking it would surprise her to her senses and embarrass her a bit, it didn't even faze her. Had it not been for the 'urgency' of getting a quick bowl of rice, I wouldn't have even bothered stopping in there...and I will NOT be patronizing this place ever again!!

Used to be better

This place was a lot better when they first opened up a couple of years ago. Decent value for the money, but food quality is mediocre...very typical of many AYCE (All You Can Eat) sushi places in the Lower Mainland. I was there with my wife & my Dad about a week ago, on a Tuesday evening. Food came out pretty fast, though we didn't see much of our server after food was delivered. Food quality is not what it used to be here -- some of the hot dishes were not so hot, and very lacklustre-looking. The restaurant was pretty dingy-looking, not overly clean. Washrooms were the usual mess, and the kitchen didn't look so hot, either.
