I love this place. It's not fancy, it's a cozy little california style mexican diner. I've been going to topanga for over 25 years on and off. Sometimes I just get a craving and need a softshell taco with rice and beans. Add some nachos and a dos equis...just perfect. They have a good menu but to be honest I always order the same thing, they do it that well.
As a kid I loved this place because they gave you crayons and a mexico scene to colour, if you were lucky your picture might just end up on the wall...

Living and working in the area i find myself at soda's a couple times a year, usually i say to myself "ok, just one more chance"... They continue to amaze me at how terrible a diner it has become. I feel like the owner must live in another country and has given the task of running the place to a couple highschool kids who'd much rather be somewhere else.
The last time i was at soda's pretty much summarizes most of my experiences with the place.
The restaurant was empty other than one server and a cook. We were ignored on the way in. We had to ask for menus. We were never offered anything to drink. When we got our burgers they were so greasy i could have used a roll of paper towel. We were never given cutlery or napkins. The waitress was nowhere to be found so i had to get up and help myself. She never came and asked how the food was. My friend waved her down at one point (remember we're the only customers), and asked for vinegar. She brought us a bottle that had flies floating in it. Not one fly but at least half a dozen. Again, she never came to see if we wanted anything else, we just left some money on the table and left. Talk about great dining experiences! I think i dwelled too much on how bad the service was and ignored the fact that even a basic hamburger was just awful. This place needs new ownership or it should just be bulldozed. If you don't believe me i dare you to try it for yourself... I'd like to hear other experiences.
