Best Sandwiches in town
Submitted Tuesday, October 25, 2005 - 2:01pm [Dine in]

The sandwiches here are so big that I can never finish the whole thing in one sitting. I usually eat half for lunch and the rest for dinner lol. There's so much meat crammed in there it'll have you wondering how they make any money at all!

The place is pretty small and more of a grocery/meat shop than a restaurant, so it's probably best to get the sub to go.

My favorite sandwich is the BC Transit. I don't remember exactly what's in it... but it's good! All subs cost around $6 and a little more for the ones with turkey.

Below average food accompanied by bad service = a big disappointment.

Food took very long to arrive and wasn't very good... The only thing I liked was the interesting way they made their sushi.

Our waitress was very rude and was quite defensive when we complained at the end of our meal.

A novel dining experience
Submitted Monday, October 24, 2005 - 3:46am [Dine in]

Stonegrill is situated below the Granville bridge and is right across from Granville island. The restaurant is bright compared to most other restaurants and we were seated in a table that barely fit between four pillars which wasn't too great and made it seem like we were on display.

You cook your own food, so you can make it to your own taste and what's great is everything is always hot.

Service wasn't too great as the place seems understaffed. Everything takes very long to come out despite not having to be cooked.

The restaurant is interesting enough to visit once for a unique dining experience, but not enough to come back.

Submitted Sunday, October 16, 2005 - 4:25am [Dine in]

Went here on a Saturday and didn't make reservations... BIG mistake!! The wait was one and a half hours!

This location is slightly bigger than the Thurlow location and quite a bit smaller than the gastown location. Food was excellent as usual, but service was not as spot on as the other locations. It seemed they were short of staff the night I went.

My favorite dish was the Tuna Yukki (tuna tartar without the bread). I also enjoyed the Tuna Tataki (sliced seared tuna with garlic chips) and the Soft Shell Crab Salad.

imho, I would rate the Thurlow location as the best, followed by Robson, then Gastown. I liked dishes at the Thurlow location best as well as the atmosphere. However, the gastown location would probably be the best choice if you're at all claustrophobic.

Eat good for cheap!
Submitted Saturday, October 15, 2005 - 7:41pm [Dine in]

X-site is close to my heart as it is close to my home. I've been here many times and what always brings me back is the low prices and great food! For around 6 dollars you can get a mushroom burger with potatoes and salad! Everything on their menu is under $10, and they have a pretty decent selection of burgers, pasta, and steak too! Service is fast and unobtrusive. The room is very dark and there's funky decor on the walls. Food comes out pretty fast so you can get in and out fast if you're somewhat on the go.

Good but prefer Thurlow Location
Submitted Monday, October 3, 2005 - 11:47pm [Dine in]

Guu's gastown location is situated on the second floor almost right on the corner of Water Street and West Cordova. The decor is quite different from the Thurlow location and is also much bigger. It's darker and more upscale looking. Sizewize it seemed more like a "real restaurant" than the cramped Thurlow location, yet the extra space seemed to take away some of Guu's appeal.

Favorite dishes include the Asparagus rolled Bacon, Calamari with shrimp, and duck (where you grill it yourself). Total for five people came out to $85 (around 11-13 dishes, 4 teas, 1 beer). Foodwise, I prefer the Thurlow location to the Gastown one, though I still haven't tried the Robson one.

The service is pretty good, but again not as great as the Thurlow location. This is mainly because everything is so much more spread out! What I thought was a little funny was that they said "sorry for the wait" after bringing out almost every dish, even when the wait wasn't very long.

THE Late Night Snack Spot
Submitted Monday, October 3, 2005 - 3:21am [Dine in]

I always come here for late night pho. It's a bit dirty inside, but the pho tastes great. The place is pretty packed during the late hours. There's sometimes a couple of stray bums outside, so try to get in and out quick.

Despite dining here many times, I can never pronounce or remember the name of this place. In my mind it's just xing xing xing lui :P

Worth Checking out
Submitted Sunday, October 2, 2005 - 11:00pm [Dine in]

Went here today with a party of three. Arrived around 6ish, and had to wait about half an hour for a table. The place is pretty small and it's very easy to miss if you're just driving by. Inside there's probably only enough room for 8 or so people to wait. Some people came in and left. They weren't taking reservations on the day went (sunday).

The space inside is very cozy because of the small space and the decor. There are decorations hanging off the walls and ceiling. The music reminded me of music they would play to a guy sketching a picture with a pencil. The service is friendly and helpful. They poured water out of a wine bottole which I thought was interesting. Overall, it's a pretty nice environment inside.

We ordered the scallop and tiger prawn tournedos, which was pretty good. The Chicken, which honestly is pretty much the best chicken I've had that was on the bone. The Ahi Tuna, which was alright but not too outstanding. Grilled Asparagus, it was topped with some cheese, was just okay. The pomme frites, which is a GIANT plate of hickory stick like fries. We couldn't finish it at all. It's alright, but a little too much for three people. The risotto, I thought it was alright, but realized that I didn't really like risotto in general. By the point we got to the risotto we were stuffed and couldn't finish it either.

Overall, I'd rate the place a four. It's pretty good, but not mind-blowingly so. If you go, be sure to get the chicken!

darn good bbq!!
Submitted Saturday, October 1, 2005 - 3:33am [Dine in]

Went with five friends today and upon arrival had to wait about half-an-hour for a table at around 8 on a friday. Make sure to put your name on the list if there's a line up.

Basically you just go up to the counter and order whatever, pay for it, and they'll bring it to your table.

We ordered the Elvis platter and it was gigantic!! It can with cornbread, fries, coleslaw, potato salad, chilli, pulled pork, sausage, a whole chicken (i think), ribends, and sliced brisket. We couldn't finish it, but had eaten enough that the leftovers weren't worth packing up. I ate so much I could barely walk after :P.

The best thing out of all of the items from the platter were the ribs, which disappeared really fast and the sausage. I liked the cornbread and how it was moist.

poor food
Submitted Thursday, September 29, 2005 - 4:05am [Dine in]

Went here a while ago with a party of four. Took forever to get seated, even when it was pretty late at night and on a thursday. The food turned out pretty bad. Two people ordered the ravioli from the iron chef menu and there were large lumps of salt in both of them. I had a poutine which was really really bad. Don't really remember what else we ordered, but we had all agreed that it was bad.

Haven't been to lumiere, but hope that it's not too similar to our experience at feenies.

I've been to this restaurant a couple of times. It's located right at the edge of chinatown by tinseltown. I really like the different teas and appetizers; Particularily the halibut congee. It's different from any other congee I've had before... but in a good way! We order it everytime.

The main courses I've never found that outstanding. The best by far is the kung po chicken with rice noodles.

Submitted Monday, September 26, 2005 - 10:38pm [Dine in]

Went here with a party of 4 today, ordered around 10 dishes, and in total the bill came out to only 55 including taxes!

Was really impressed with the food. My favorite dish was the Yukke of salmon, a salmon tartar with shrimp chips! Good stuff!

Service is great, only had to look up for a couple of seconds to get a waitress' attention. Food also came very quickly.

Great Cheesecake
Submitted Monday, September 26, 2005 - 2:41am [Dine in]

I think there's pretty much only one type of cheesecake they serve, but with different toppings (eg. strawberry sauce). There's pretty much nothing else on their menu.

But the cheesecake is really good. My favorite is the one with strawberry topping.
