What a great place
Submitted Tuesday, April 13, 2010 - 5:45pm [Dine in]

Decided to give this place a try in March and have been back several times. Their panang curry is one of the best I've tried. Their service is friendly and kind, a little slow to bring the bill.
Lunch specials are an insane value at $6.95 and you get a huge amount of very delicious food!
They are generous with flavour and spice. Nothing bland about this food and they don't dumb down the heat as much as other restaurants.
Highly recommended.

Great Dim Sum!
Submitted Friday, October 30, 2009 - 12:42am [Dine in]

Went last Sunday for Dim sum with friends. I was impressed with the portions and the taste! Easy to follow menu and friendly staff.
The food was great, the dim sum menu has a lot of dim sum standards (I've been to quite a few dim sum places) and some I'd never seen before and tried.
I have no complaints about this place. The prices were more than fair, my 4 friends and I ate like kings for less than 60 bucks with tip.
Will be going again!!

Better than when it was Jazzy Jones, but that's not saying much.
Submitted Tuesday, October 20, 2009 - 6:47pm [Dine in]

Went with my family a few weeks ago. We ordered wings to share and entrees. They were not flexible with the sauces (10 per sauce) even though, when the wings arrived, it was clear they were deep-fried and the sauce was added afterward.
Our entrees were passable, but nothing stellar, on the bland side.
For the price, it was crappy.
As for the interior of the place, I have to agree with previous reviewers...It's just odd.
Also, when I went months previous they had a toilet out of order in the women's bathroom, and it was still out of order when I went under new name and ownership (with the same sign).
Hate to say this, but it was better as an Applebees.

I go here often
Submitted Friday, July 3, 2009 - 9:33pm [Dine in]

Asian 54 is a great little gem near Metrotown. I usually order a delicious beef pho and salad rolls to share. Their salad rolls have crunchy bits of fried spring roll in them and are super delish. The waitress here knows me and has always been very friendly. I take my friends here often. Nothing better on a soggy day than some nice hot pho!

Wilted and brown salad to accompany burned veggie burger.
Submitted Tuesday, May 12, 2009 - 10:55pm [Dine in]

Went today for lunch and was VERY disappointed to say the least.
My beef is with the crappy food.
We ordered calamari to start which was pretty good, not a huge amount though for the price.
My friend ordered a Cobb Salad entree (at 12 bucks) and I ordered the veggie burger.
My burger came singed and dry. There were no condiments on the burger at all. Just some dry and brown lettuce and some dried out onion and bad tomato. No mayo, no ketchup, nothing. I asked for mayo and they charged me.
This was nothing compared to my friend who's salad came brown and rotting. She tried a bite with the chicken it came with and said "I can't eat this". It was sent back and a new salad came sans chicken. The waitress informed us that there was no chicken on the new salad because the kitchen staff said my friend ate it all...Not true.
The "garlic bread" her salad came with looked like old greasy spoon toast that would come with a trucker breakfast. No, wait, it looked worse.
The new salad was just as bad, wilted bagged lettuce hiding slimy rotting lettuce and avocado. My friend was getting upset. She was kind to the waitress, but asked "Would you pay 12 dollars for this?" the waitress replied "no".
The salad was sent back and we weren't charged for that.
But we did pay a handsome 4 dollars for my pop.
We tipped the poor waitress, but made it clear that it the money wasn't for the kitchen staff.
Bottom line, the food sucked.

Food is ok, service was awful.
Submitted Friday, December 28, 2007 - 3:11pm [Dine in]

I went recently with my family. We all ordered steaks. We waited 40 mins for our food and longer for water re-fills.
Our waiter ignored us, but had no trouble frequenting the table beside us that was full of young women.
I asked for a rare steak, and it came out medium, even medium well. I guess I should have asked for it blue.
It was decent, but I know I could have done a better job myself at home. After dinner, my brother got dessert and my husband and I ordered tea. Someone other than our waiter brought out the dessert about 10 minutes later. As for our tea, my brother (who is a painfully slow eater) was done his dessert before our hot water and bags came out. Needless to say we sent the teas back.
It was just a lousy experience.

Its always a great place for lunch
Submitted Friday, December 28, 2007 - 2:58pm [Dine in]

My husband and I love Hawker's. Its easy, tasty and really, really resonably priced.
I have had almost everything on the menu, and must say I've never been dissapointed.
People who know and love this place come to love the "ambiance", although I can see how some first time visitors may find it odd. Also, If you're a stickler for super clean bathrooms, you may want to avoid the one in Hawker's, but the same can be said for many bathrooms in local restaurants.
I like to take my friends here and only had one complaint of someone getting sick the next day. It MAY have been the food, but more likely the 5 martinis he had after!
Highly recommended.

A nice place for your anniversary, or anytime.
Submitted Friday, December 28, 2007 - 2:48pm [Dine in]

My husband and I were celebrating our 5th wedding anniversary this summer and stayed at the Swans Suite Hotel (the restaurant is in the same building). We were originally going to go out, but the weather was so awful, we stayed at the hotel. What a good decision. We had the most wonderful time. Our cocktails came out quickly and were skillfully poured. Our appetizers were delicious (we had a fish salad and another plate with sausage and pate).
Our dinners of lamb and bison were cooked to perfection, had delicious and creative sauces and were presented like works of art.
Our desert was a chocolate tray of delights. We were so stuffed and couldn't finish, so they packed them up. As an added bonus they added some more chocolate covered strawberries and gave us the desert for free (as an anniversary gift).
The decor is classy-comfort and more. We had a wonderful time and would/will be going again next time we're in Victoria.

Good food, but take-out service questionable
Submitted Friday, December 28, 2007 - 2:34pm [Dine in]

I love this place 99% of the time. I live a few blocks away, so I do take-out a lot.
The food is solid. Good portions and nice sauces. If you like your pasta heavy on the sauce, maybe its not the place for you.
Also! I had friends over for dinner with different dietary needs (lactose intolerant, only eats fish, doesn't eat peppers) and I managed to accomodate everyone. They have a great varied menu.
My only beef is a couple of times when I called on a busy night for take-out, I was left on hold (phone on counter) for a long time (one time for 25 minutes). My suggestion to them, if reading, is to get a better system in place for take-out orders.

We always have a good time
Submitted Friday, December 28, 2007 - 2:27pm [Dine in]

I've been going here for 10 years. Its tasty food and I get cravings for the thai iced tea with cream.
The coconut curries are wonderful.
They have a mushroom and bamboo shoot dish that I also like a lot.
The service is always prompt and polite.
They have a nice desert menu as well. Delicious sweet rice and mango when in season!

Good times, good food.
Submitted Friday, December 28, 2007 - 2:20pm [Dine in]

I'd never been to Shabusen before I went for my birthday.
Its a good place to go if you have some time and people to talk to. The food is great, the meat is super tasty, and the whole "cook your own meat' experience is a lot of fun.
Sometimes you have to flag a waiter down (our grill was a little crazy hot), but its nothing I haven't experienced at other Vancouver restaurants.
I'm going to take my parents there this weekend.
I would recommend wearing clothes you don't mind washing once you get home. Last time I went I left smelling a little like the restaurant.

You'll regret it, but you'll eat it anyway.
Submitted Wednesday, July 5, 2006 - 2:35pm [Dine in]

Bon's does a huge breaky for $2.99.
You get eggs, hash, toast and bacon or whatever.
Its a big grease-o-rama-rama.
It tastes fine, people obviously like it cause theres a huge line up out the door on weekends.
Its your duty as a vancouverite or greater vancouverite to at least try this place.
And live without regret...Just a bloated tummy and a greasy chin! :)

Horrible service
Submitted Wednesday, July 5, 2006 - 2:20pm [Dine in]

I liked this place when it was Fatzo's!
I went a few months ago with my husband and my brother and his wife. The place was deserted.
The food came late and the waitresses (thats right, there were 3 working at the time) totally ignored us, and talked to each other!
It was overpriced for the serving sizes.
When I went before when it was called Fatzo's, the service was great and the food and portions wonderful!
I had never been so annoyed at a waitress as I was on my visit to Slim's. It was awful. Despite my outrage, I left a tip (people need to make a living) , but left a note saying they were cooks tips only.
The food was passable (even good) too bad the service sucked!
It's a shame.

I love this place!
Submitted Wednesday, July 5, 2006 - 2:10pm [Dine in]

I could eat here everyday!
I love love love the spicy lamb and the mussels in the turmeric and coconut sauce (drools). The satays come with the most delicious peanut sauce.
I have tried so many dishes here and have been impressed with all of them (even the one with eggplant- and I don't really like eggplant!)
The service is quick and the restaurant is beautifully decorated!
Make a reservation on weekends because its a very popular place!
