Finally found some decent flavourful thai food, will be back
Submitted Friday, October 5, 2012 - 2:43pm [Dine in]

Restaurant was really quiet on a Monday night, only 1-2 other tables occupied, wasn't sure what to expect, but it was girls night out and we just wanted a nearby place to chat comfortably so had no expectations as food wasn't the priority. Ambiance was decent, comfy booth seats give you privacy within your own party, bathroom clean. But we were really pleasantly surprised as the 3 dishes plus rice that we ordered to share was really packed with authentic solid flavour.

We had the boneless chicken in Thai peanut sauce on a bed of spinach, wasn't my favourite dish but it was a different twist to pair peanuts with chicken and the sauce was really good with rice so I enjoyed it. We were impressed with the beef with red curry paste because the beef was really tender and not dry or chewy sinews at all so I guess they used better cuts of beef for this, and the curry had a nice subtle spicy kick that caught you off guard like 5 bites later, but in a good way. We're not big rice eaters but it had us wanting to order more rice just so we could scoop that sauce all over more rice. You could really taste the curry spices and coconut milk in the sauce plus it wasnt the consistency of thin curry soup which ive had at some other places which is really irritating. And of course we had to order the traditional pad Thai (not the tomato sauce one), and that was one of the better pad Thais I've had in the lower mainland. Really flavourful without being MSGish, noodles were right consistency, lots of shrimp, much better than some of the other bland pad Thais out there that look like a pad Thai and has all the ingredients but just has no flavour, or the ones that use so much msg it leaves your mouth dry all night. Overall I would come back for sure, even without the entertainment coupon that we used :). Service was polite, water was refilled before empty.

regular night-outs with girlfriends

We always order the same items on girls night-outs! Grilled chicken salad, cheese tofu, om rice, yakiudon........For some reason, this combination really fills us up and the variety satisfies us and we don't seem to get tired of it :) Definitely a favorite! It gets quite busy though so we always try to go during their "off" times after the dinner rushes, or book ahead.

extra anchovies
Submitted Tuesday, October 6, 2009 - 12:57am [Dine in]

I'm also really glad we decided to try this place. I asked for anchovies to be added to our hawaiian style pizza and not only did the chef not charge me extra (as I found out later) but he was glad to joke around with us as well despite the sweltering heat in the small restaurant. It was such a tasty pizza and we enjoyed it by the pier on a sunny day where the passerbys asked us where we got the pizza from. I will definitely visit again when we are in the area. Makes me hungry thinking about it again!

wow what poor service
Submitted Tuesday, October 6, 2009 - 12:51am [Dine in]

I have eaten here a few years ago once.....everyone raved about their value, but the place was really dirty. The tables were sticky, the floors were gross.

Most recently, we decided to give it another try, not sure why, but it was on the way and we felt like some cheap and quick eats.....the constant line-ups can't mean the place is that pathetic.....WRONG......we never even got a chance to sit down because the waitresses decided to seat 3 other parties before us even though I had specifically politely reminded her just 2 minutes ago that we had arrived first and the whole restaurant full of patrons obviously saw that I was the only one standing waiting first before everyone else.

I was shocked and I got so upset that I went up and told the waitress loudly that we were first and that it's ok though, because we don't want to eat there anyways and stormed out.

What ridiculous service when they don't even care about the customers anymore....sad.

Disappointed by food and service
Submitted Sunday, January 13, 2008 - 7:03pm [Dine in]

We were invited for a birthday party, and the seating was on the outside patio. The scenery facing the waters and downtown Vancouver created a breathtaking view, albeit a bit chilly in January since the patio is only partially enclosed from the winds.

The starters were ordered at the same time but arrived separately. Our friends across the table had finished their soup and calamari before our starters even arrived. I had ordered crab cakes and seafood pannini and they both tasted exactly the same, very bland, with the exception that the crab cakes were fried. We also sampled the crab dip with bread and that was tasteless as well (can-like taste). The sweet and spicy wings were the only good-tasting item. The entrees also took an hour at least to arrive (noting that they did have another larger party to accomodate). My friend orderd a $12 entree of crab ravioli and there were only 3 raviolis spaced apart on a long plate (my friend was not full, to say the least). The chicken chowder was also very salty, and the pasta dish was very garlicky.

I just wish the beautiful view could have been accompanied by great-tasting food and faster service.

Grossed out
Submitted Sunday, January 13, 2008 - 6:36pm [Dine in]

We went to HKYK a couple of weeks ago and let's just say I got got a stomachache that night. The last time I was there was more than 5 years ago and it was decent, but this time with 3 other friends was very disturbing.

First of all, the table was sticky. Then we examined the tea cups and there were yellow and brown dried crusts from incomplete dishwashing on 2 cups, 1 spoon, and 2 bowls (which we asked to be exchanged). I should have taken this as the clue to leave, but being from Asia, where we are accustomed to rinsing out own dishes and cutlery before eating at any restaurant anyways, I shrugged to my friends and thought it was no big deal. I was wrong.

Where do I begin with the things that were wrong? I'll make it easier to read in list form:
-as the servers lifted and retrieved our finished plates, they let the wet drippings from the plates drip through the air onto our own plates
-i asked for a pencil to fill in my all-u-can-eat form and the server dropped a wooden pencil's sharpened lead end into my plate of uncooked beef balls, no apologies, did not even acknowledge anything out of the ordinary happened
-all-u-can-eat is NOT really all-u-can-eat as we ordered 10 plates of beef slices to share amongst the four of us and they only brought out four plates after much waiting and asking, when I kindly reminded the server that we had ordered 10 plates, his reply was "that's all that is available for now", but we ended up waiting so long that we left
-the men's bathroom had no handsoap, I had to go to women's bathroom to get soap and pass it outside to my guy friend waiting in the hallway
-the fish we ordered was slimy and tasted like it has been dead for a loooong time
-there was a curly short hair in my chili sauce for dipping
-there were massive spider webs decorating the tops of our window sills

Bottom line is this restaurant needs to clean up, did not serve fresh food, and they need to retrain all the staff on food safe.
