Felt like I was transformed to an intimate European cafe - excellent food
Submitted Sunday, May 15, 2011 - 1:36pm [Dine in]

What a great find! With it's decor, warm and professional service and delicious food...I felt I walked off Commercial Drive and into a quaint, romantic caffe somewhere in France. We ordered the mussels (as had many others in the room), followed by the seafood feature of the evening. The portions were generous and each dish overflowed with flavor. Our server, Tim, was a true professional - the perfect measure of knowledgeable, friendly, helpful and attentive while discretely being present. The menu is French/Tunisian. I will definitely be coming back here!

New live music on Thursdays is great
Submitted Saturday, May 14, 2011 - 2:56pm [Dine in]

DINNER: I had dinner here the first night of their "Thursday night live music". Two performers - woman's voice is beautiful. Not too loud so you can still have a conversation. The place was moderately busy. The service was great. Our two meals were delicious. The owner was there, he came and spoke to us - very personable. The chef also came out and asked how our meals were - impressive. It's evident why The Well survives in these competitive days.

BRUNCH: I had brunch there last Saturday. While our food was delicious (and everyone else's looked great too), the service was very amateur - disappointing since my dinner experience here was so great. Example, I asked for a lemon for my water and the waiter brought it in his fingers, not even with a napkin, huh? Then we had to ask for salt/pepper shakers, our waters to be refilled, napkins, etc - basic server stuff (I know, I was a server once). Again, the food was delicious. Just need to train staff a little better before they hit the floor.

A great experience

We were five women out for a nice dinner on a Friday, Canucks playoff night. The service at ORUS was exceptional on all levels from the moment we arrived until we left - friendly, unpretentious, helpful, knowledgable about the menu. Oru is situated in the Fairmont Pacific Rim hotel...and so the service was true to Fairmont quality.

Each of our appetizers and main dishes were delicious, absolutely full of flavor. This wasn't a surprise since we heard of the chef's notable reputation. From Tuna Tataki, to Halibut, to Butter Chicken, to Bison...we savored each dish. We ended our evening with espressos. Our server also brought two slate plates of dessert samples...we didn't order them and so were curious what would appear on our bills. Pleasantly, we discovered the desserts were complimentary. Impressive! At 7pm the restaurant was quiet but it got quite busy around 9:30pm. It's large, and has a nice atmosphere with lots of space between tables. When we left around 10pm, the lounge downstairs was busy, a live band just started, so the option was there to stay longer and have an after dinner drink. We all highly recommend ORU - Check out the menu and pics online. You won't be disappointed. It's true value!
