I don't understand all those negative reviews about this place. We've been coming here for nearly a year now... pretty much since it opened. Sometimes the service is rough, and sometimes it's inconsistent. But I highly doubt it's easy to keep staff on Cambie with the lack of consistent hours. There just aren't enough customers back yet for any waitress to earn her share of tips. So I accept that. But we aren't going there for the waitress. We're there for the food, and time after time it is superb! Even now as I am writing this review I find myself licking my lips.
Several times I've seen the owner/chef disagree with a customer, but that's half the fun.. knowing you're in it for real conversation and not some smiling bobble head who will agree with you just because you're the customer. The first time he approached our table, he was loud and I thought he was angry, but in due time I realized that's his voice, even when he's happy.
And let's not forget the portions: HUUUUUUGE!!! My boyfriend eats a lot, but if we go to Alexi's, he doesn't fills up on one entree, and we even have some leftovers sometimes.
My favourite is the veggie casserole, but that's often a feature and not regularly available. I also love the roast lamb (my boyfriend's favourite), and the chicken souvlaki. And for lunch on Saturday with the girls, the Greek salad with a humous dip to share. We often ask for extra pita bread.
When I go to Alexi's, I feel like I'm visiting a friend's house for a casual hearty home-cooked meal. I wouldn't want it any other way.
Pick your pasta... pick your sauce... and the chef will mix a dinner that will satisfy the pickiest of pasta connoisseurs...
The staff are friendly... seems to be a family-run place...
Caution... if you don't like garlic, don't bother with Roman's...
Oh, and don't forget order the Misto salad (I hope I got the name right)... it's fresh and the light dressing makes me lick my lips just thinking of it...
Nobody in Vancouver and I mean NOBODY can beat the price and quantity and taste of the lamb dinner from Stepho's... the briami is delish...
My recommendation: call ahead and order for take-out... then go home and enjoy it in peace without the long lineups and the noisy tourists...
There's enough food to have dinner and save leftovers for both the next day's lunch and dinner... seriously... two to three meals for each lamb dinner you order...
And it's all under $10!!!
I've been to Figmint twice and both times for business meetings...
The first time I went, I had a fish dish... I can't recall the name but it was white fish prepared on a rice bed... I've never had better fish...
The second time I had a rice/cream dish that was the special of the day... I licked the bowl (or at least I would have licked it if it weren't a business lunch)...
And the true delight: the fresh variety of breads at the beginning of the meal...
One suggestion: choose your seat wisely as you may have to endure sun in your eyes throughout the meal...
We originally went for the butter chicken... it was part of the buffet so we had the buffet...
Well there wasn't much in the buffet so we really only had the rice and butter chicken in the end...
It was bland... no spice... none... how could this be Indian?... and the chicken was big white chunks... but definitely not fresh... it appeared to be some kind of processed chicken cubes...
The rice pudding was okay...
As for service... we were seated... we were one of only three tables of patrons... we waited five minutes to even get water... and then he didn't ask if we wanted any other drinks... we served ourselves buffet... and then we had the dirty dishes in front of us while we ate the rice pudding... nobody offered us a bill... we headed to the till and out the door...
Oh, and the two of us spent over $40 for all of this...
I visit Dadeo weekly for the cajun sweet potato fries... and if you're a "dipper", make sure you order extra dip... it's finger licking good...
If you're feeling guilty about just having fries, add a side of cajun grilled chicken breast... mmm...
My only complaint: this place is closed on Wednesdays...
Oh, and I love the green jalapeno jelly that arrives with fresh biscuits at the start of every meal...
During the winter, I dropped by Trixi's for a warm crepe and a chance to read the newspaper or write in my journal. The service was second to none. The friendly staff got to know my orders and always poured my favourite (Orangina) within seconds of my arrival.
Now that summer is FINALLY here, I am loving the selection of gelatos.
My favourite crepe: ham and swiss. It's much more filling than a sandwich of the same name anywhere else.
My favourite drink: Orangina.
My favourite treat to take home: a jar of Nutella.
We heard about this place through word of mouth and decided to try it today for lunch. Woah! What a delight! The decor was amazing... handcrafted walls, tables, and intricate marble, wood, and metal-work.
The lunch menu offered everything from wraps to salads to soups... chicken, pork, beef, and lamb.
I chose the chicken ceasar wrap with the soup of the day and a Greek salad. The whole meal cost only $7.99.
My companion chose the lamb wrap with the same soup and salad as me. His cost only $7.99.
The soup of the day was a light creamy chicken veggie soup. I could have this daily.
We both loved our wraps and our salads... made fresh for us... no preservatives... no previously frozen food...
It's been eight hours and we're still full. We can't wait to go back for other lunch choices... and maybe plan a double date with friends for a dinner night out.
Oh wait... I forgot to mention the homemade tiramisu! Yummm.... my only complaint yet again is that the portion was way too big...
