I wandered into this place for chai and ended up eating a couple of samosas too because they looked really fresh. And they were very tasty too. It seems the place has been painted recently; the place is clean, the server is attentive and the turn-over seems very high. Even while we waited for our chai, there was a steady stream of customers who came to take out food and snacks.
The veg thali looked good too. Will surely try that next time.
This is not a fine-dining experience; so don't expect any atmosphere.
The atmosphere seemd nice and we went here for lunch. The food here is bad and doens't have any flavour. I had an indonesian meal that was mainly of only carrots and cabbage. The salad was made of carrots and cabbage, contained a few strings of beans and the sayur kari again contained mainly cabbage and carrots. maybe two pieces of something that tasted like tofu and two pieces of eggplant and one piece of brocoli. The spring rolls were again filled with cabbage (looks like they had bought this in large quantitites and wanted to get rid of it). The service was poor. They weren't interested in finding out how the meal was. All in all a bad experience.
I get a Falafel plate when I don't feel like cooking and still want something healthy. I usually get the chicken shawarma for my other half. I highly recommend both dishes. We usually do take-out because there`s a noisy TV in the restaurant.
Sammy, the owner is usually friendly despite being very busy.
I like the way he makes the rice too. The salad is usually very fresh. It`s not fine dining, but good value for money.
We went with a group for friends for the lunch buffett to Saravana Bhavan today. The food was very fresh and tasty. The service is excellent. The waitress kept coming with more dosas, naans and puris. There was a hostess just there to explain to you what the dishes were, in case you were visiting the restaurant for the first time. The wadas and the different kinds of rice were yummy. The dessert was excellent. They've even included chole (chickpeas) and palak paneer to please the Vancoverite who knows only North Indian cuisine so far! We even bought some snacks and sweets to take home and have with tea. Our friends were very pleased with the vegetarian fare, even though they are meat eaters. All in all, still a very pleasant experience. Keep it up, Saravana Bhavan!
We had the buffet dinner today and we thought it was quite good. The food was fresh and the garlic naan was very tasty. The food was not over-spiced. The service was friendly. The place is a bit over-crowded with no space between the tables, but otherwise good value for money. I missed having papad though. Even roasted papad would have been nice. There’s also a good choice of wine and beer to be had.
The first time we visited this restaurant soon after they opened, I was quite impressed. When we went back, it had deteriorated ... the dosas had been made and left standing for sometime before we were served ... so they were cold. The waitress never came back to serve us more chutney.
They were busy with some people who came much later than us, who were probably acquaintances or friends. They probably didn't remember that we were paying for the meal too.
I'll never go back.
The food here is very good and the owner who takes the orders himself is very polute, he has a very good sense of humour. My SO got some lamb kabab and said it was delicious. So did some other friends who took home chicken tikka.
Except for dal (lentils) there's unfortunately nothing vegetarian.
His bread (naan) is good too.
After all the good reviews I had read here. we went there for lunch today. The bread was good (Naan) and so was the halibut. The lentil soup was delicious. The chef can't make rotis to save his life .... they were just oily and under-cooked.
There's very little choice for vegetarians. I was surprised because while they have even elk and boar and venison on their menu, they did not take vegetarians and the vegans here in Vancouver into consideration.
Hope they will change this in future. I had a paneer dish which was very good. The sauces were good too.
Atlast Vancouver has something better than your run-of-the-mill greasy butter chicken restaurant.
I wish I had the reviews before going to this place today. I had a friend visiting me and she had heard about the sushi in Vancouver. I decided to try this place. And I made a terrible mistake deciding to try the AYCE for lunch because I thought she could try different types of sushi and tempura.
The service was unfriendly. The waitress just gave us some chits of paper and didn't turn up for a while after that. The cooks indicated to us that we had to write down the numbers. Then finally she came and took our order and for some reason was unhappy right from the start. Some of the things like tempura wasn't delivered to us. When I pointed it out to the waitress, she denied it. Then I asked her to show me the slip of paper and there was the number. All in all, bad food and unfriendly service. I'm never going to visit this place ever agin and I'll warn all my friends who regularly try out sushi places not to go there.
There were a lot of tourists at the restaurant and I was wondering what kind of an impression they would take back of Vancouver if they were all treated in this manner.
My friend didn't want to leave a tip. The waitress had the cheek to ask us if we were expecting change to be given back, to which I promptly said "yes".
Hope this place closes down soon.
I was such a fan of Babylon and got a take-out atleast once a week. Last week there were stones in the Khuskhus and the food was hardly edible. The falafel was rubbery and the salad was not fresh anymore. Has the cook changed?
I thought I had bad luck, but my significant other complained about his chiken shawarma too. Such a pity!
This place has fresh sushi everyday. It’s a take-out but it’s better than most restaurants in the neighbourhood that offer sushi. It’s not expensive, the people at the cash are friendly and courteous even when there are long line-ups, especially at lunch time. They have good miso soup too. I love their yam tempura sushi. I do wish they had more choices for vegetarians.
I headed to this restuarant last week with a friend who had been there several times for lunch. I had the Pad Thai which was quite good; not your ketchupy sauce. I'm a vegetarian and they made me a pad thai without the fish sauce. The place could be spruced up a bit but I had the impression that it was quite clean. Portions are good and so is the service. I'm surely going there for lunch again.
Went with a group of friends to Me & Julio for brunch today... wasn't very impressed. The portions were small (for the prices they charge) and the place was very loud. we had to shout while talking to the friends across the table. The waitress didn't bother to fill our glasses with water. Two of us are vegetarian and there's not much of a choice.
we love this place for the location and the ambience. we didn't have a reservation on Thu, it was packed for lunch and when I mentioned to one of the staff that it was my significant half's birthday and could she please help me, she immediately did. His salmon was excellent; my ravioli was ok. Wish there were more dishes on the menu for a vegetarian and not just one wok, one ravioli and a salad!
This is a great place to have a coffee or lunch when you're downtown. The Cafe has a nice ambiance and one can go there after a visit to the Gallery.
Unfortunately, the Cafe has a very rude Manager. I was ticked off by him recently when I asked if they had organic sugar. While one of the servers there was trying to be helpful and wanted to check if they had some, the Manager came and ticked me off, saying he knew they didnt have any, because "I am the Manager. I do the ordering around here!"
I was stunned because this is not the kind of behaviour one usually encounters in Vancouver.
This man should be given a few lessons in politeness.
We made the mistake of going there yesterday. I have never eaten such badly made Vegetarian Pad Thai before - the Tofu was rubbery. The noodles were overcooked. The sauce was just ketchup. My husband ordered Ginger chicken which was terrible.
The service was indifferent. The waitress gave us one menu between the two of us. I had a headache after drinking the "House Wine". It should have stayed closed.
They hadn't even bothered to dust the place.
I like the veg pizza for lunch. The bread and soup they have during lunch is good too. The Tiramisu is excellent.
One could take the trouble to clean the tables after people have left. And also see to it that there are clean glasses for drinking water.
I think the service is quick if you want to grab something and head back to the office during lunchtime.
