Pleasant Surprise
Submitted Sunday, May 9, 2010 - 11:27am [Dine in]

Having read the reviews here, I was not expecting much from Mandalay. However, it turned out much better than I expected. I went on a Thursday evening with a couple of friends, and since it was nice out, we sat on the patio. Our server was very pleasant, as was the buser. We ordered the spinach, crab and artichoke dip for an appetizer, and it arrived warm without being too hot to touch, and it didn't have an overpowering seafood taste, which I was afraid of. Both my friends ordered the steak burger, and they both liked it a lot. One of my friends is very picky about the toppings on her burger, and basically asked for a customized version of what was on the menu. I was a little embarrassed by it, but our server didn't seem to mind, and the burger arrived just as my friend had requested. I had the asparagas and asiago ravioli. The sauce was the main source of flavour, but I enjoyed it well enough. Dessert is my favourite course, and it was delicious here. I had a pear shaped chocolate hazelnut frozen dessert, that I found very unique. My friend had the creme brulee, which she pretty much breathed in. At one point, it was beginning to get a little chilly, and we were given blankets, which I thought was a very considerate touch. I would definitely come back here.

Delicious

My boyfriend and I came here for lunch on my birthday. The decor inside is a bit worn and dated, and the lighting just makes it look worse. Since it was a nice day, though, we sat outside on the patio, which didn't have that tired, slightly claustrophobic, feel about it. However, since we were the only ones sitting outside, our server wasn't around as much. We only saw her when she took our order, brought our food, and asked us how everything tasted. As such, we ran out of water well before we were done eating, and had to go looking for her in order to pay the bill. Nonetheless, the food was delicious. I had the hot shrimp melt, which was crisp without being overdone. My boyfriend had the shepherd's pie, which he enjoyed. Overall, a place I would visit again, if I'm ever wandering around Kerrisdale.

Just for Looking

I first went to Shady Island a couple years back with my best friend. She didn't much like her food, but I had a mac and cheese dish they were testing, and loved it. As such, I suggested to my boyfriend that we go there one time, and was completely shocked by the experience! I had a burger, and he had a hot shrimp melt. My patty was burnt; the lettuce leaf dwarfed everything else, making biting into the thing extremely awkward; and there was far too much sauce. As well, the fries that came with the burger tasted as if they had been reheated after a night or two. My boyfriend didn't say exactly what was wrong with his food, but he gave up after just a couple bites. The service wasn't bad, but our server didn't seem at all surprised that neither of us finished our meals or asked to pack it up. The only redeeming quality of this place is its fun martitime decor and the waterfront patio. I'd maybe go back to have a drink to soak in the view, but never for the food.

My Favourite Pub

My boyfriend and I have lunch here after church every other Sunday. The decor is classic Irish pub, with a nice homey feel about it. I don't think I've had anything on their menu that I would not recommend, although my boyfriend wasn't a big fan of the lamb breakfast dish when he tried that. My usual is the weekend brunch special for $4.95. The only times I've been here are on Sunday afternoons and once on a weekday, so I can't say what it's like when it's busy, but I've always found the servers to be friendly and efficient. Once, we had to rush off to see a movie, so I was actually keeping track of the time, and we managed to order and eat within fifteen minutes!

Not the Best in Steveston

My boyfriend and I came here one Friday night for dinner. The decor is a little cheap looking for my taste - plastic tablecloths, eclectic artwork with no depth. However, for a casual meal, it's not too bad, I guess. The prices were really cheap. I had the fish and chips. The fish was a tiny bit overcooked, but not to the point where it was unbearable. My boyfriend was more satisfied with his meal than I was with mine. The servers were not overly attentive, but they got the job done. One thing I found pretty weird was that you can see the dishwashing station if you're seated near the back of the restaurant.
