Double One Chinese Restaurant4057 Hastings Street, Burnaby
good food, good value
Submitted Friday, March 30, 2012 - 3:32pm [Dine in]

I've been here a half dozen times or so. The food is very reasonably priced & tasty - I've never had a bad dish. Great place for a quick, tasty, inexpensive lunch. The decor is Chinese restaurant-ish, but you don't come for the ambiance. It's clean & there is always a table available, even though the restaurant is often busy.

Northlands Bar & Grill3400 Anne MacDonald Way, North Vancouver
used to be good...
Submitted Friday, March 30, 2012 - 3:26pm [Dine in]

I've been to Northlands a half dozen times or so. The food is excellent & the view can't be beat. However, the last couple times I've gone, the only server working is friendly but never around. Both times my husband had to chase him down to ask where our food was, & we waited over half an hour for our meals even though there were only a few tables occupied. Then we had to chase the server down again to pay the bill. It's a lovely place if you have ages to wait for your food, but I probably won't be going back for a while. Hopefully they shape up. It used to be a great place with excellent value, but the slow service is a real turnoff.

Thai House Restaurant116 W Esplanade, North Vancouver
worth checking out the new location
Submitted Wednesday, March 31, 2010 - 9:41am [Dine in]

As soon as you walk up to the new Thai House, the renos blow you away - the place looks AMAZING. High end decor all around - a great mix of eastern influence with western modernity. The service was outstanding too - I'm surprised by the comments below re. service. We had three servers tripping over each other to serve us. (Maybe it was a slow night - we went on a Tuesday.) One guy in particular tried really hard & gave us suggestions for curry selections. The food wasn't outstanding, but it was pretty good. I was expecting it to be spicier, but it was very flavourful. A little on the overly saucy side. I would definitely go there again - we had a great meal.

Munch Family Restaurant1233 Lynn Valley Road, #143, North Vancouver
it has its merits
Submitted Tuesday, March 23, 2010 - 12:26pm [Dine in]

I just returned from about my dozenth visit to Munch & had to write a review. The play area is a decent size & full of great toys - wooden trucks, dolls, things to climb on, a playhouse - that kids there love. For the play area alone, the cost is often worth it.

However, I've eaten meals there several times, & every time the food is so-so. The plates are small & EXPENSIVE - I don't know any parents that would choose to pay $13 for a small gourmet salad rather than $8 for a meal-size decent salad without gourmet ingredients. Plus my son's pasta was undercooked (not even al dente - it was crunchy), the sauce tasted like it was from a jar, & his meatballs were dry & flaky. He ate less than half his lunch when he usually eats everything in sight. This isn't the first time I've been seriously disappointed with the quantity & quality of food there.

However, their coffee is great & their desserts, while somewhat overpriced, are delicious. I've paid $16 for an Americano, cheesecake & tip & thought it was worth every penny because my son played for three hours & passed out exhausted in the car on the way home. However, I'll pass on the meal-type food from now on. Our two plates & a coffee came to over $30 today - not worth the money.

Cafe Zen1631 Yew St, Vancouver
a reliable, tasty meal
Submitted Friday, February 8, 2008 - 10:51am [Dine in]

I've been to Cafe Zen a couple times & both times got the same thing: prompt, good service; a tasty meal; reasonable prices; easy parking (!). The food is delicious - I've had their smoked salmon benny & some sort of mexican omelette & both were great. I left both times feeling satisfied. I'm planning to go back soon!

Beach House, The150 25th Street, West Vancouver
decent food, great view
Submitted Thursday, August 16, 2007 - 5:11pm [Dine in]

Just came back from lunch at the Beach House. The food on the menu sounded mouthwateringly good, but I was disappointed to hear that they weren't offering the three things on the menu which interested me most: mussels due to crimson tide; smoked tuna due to excessive saltiness; & the grand marnier cheesecake. It was somewhat nice to hear that they were conscientious of their food offerings, but still disappointing to hear of several items not available. The clams I ordered instead of the mussels were tasteless. The house salad was missing the oven dried tomatoes as advertised on the menu, & what was left was a small, wilted, greasy plate of arugula & baby greens. The tiramisu & cappuccino were excellent.

Would I go back? Maybe - but only if someone else suggested it. The view is the same view one can enjoy free from the pier, & the food wasn't enough to keep me coming back.

Tommy's1308 Ross Road, North Vancouver
my favourite breakfast place never disappoints!
Submitted Tuesday, August 7, 2007 - 3:28pm [Dine in]

Tommy's is five blocks from our house, but that's only one of many reasons I frequent this restaurant on a regular basis. The coffee is self-serve & always fresh, with at least one organic option. The menu offers nitrite-free sausages, free range eggs, & many other health-conscious options. The service is always friendly, even during busy times.

Tommy's seems to attract young, fit, healthy patrons, & usually has a video of extreme mountain biking or skateboarding available. There is a definite community feel.

A word to the wise: if you're going there for lunch on the weekend, be prepared to wait in line from 11am to 1pm. The line often stretches outside, rain or shine - dress accordingly! It's definitely worth the wait.

Black Bear Neighbourhood Pub1177 Lynn Valley Rd, North Vancouver
the only pub in the area = standing room only
Submitted Tuesday, August 7, 2007 - 3:16pm [Dine in]

The Black Bear is consistently packed because there isn't a single other pub within a 5km radius. The menu is typical Vancouver pub fare, but I can't think of a single dish on the menu that isn't done better somewhere else, & I've tried most of the dishes in an attempt to find a reason to keep going back.

The nachos in particular are horrific - a handful of cheddar cheese, one raw jalapeno pepper and half a tomato schlepped onto an entire bag of tortilla chips & stuck in the oven. Less than a quarter of the chips have topping on them - a $10 (small size) disappointment.

If I had any other local choices, I'd never go back. C'mon restauranteurs, you've got a captive audience in Lynn Valley who crave alternatives to a mediocre pub!

Salmon House2229 Folkestone Way, West Vancouver
great place to take out-of-town guests
Submitted Tuesday, August 7, 2007 - 3:09pm [Dine in]

My husband & I entertained a coworker/friend at the Salmon House recently. The view was beautiful. (It would have been nicer if the patio was open. There wasn't a cloud in the sky - what's with that?) The food was excellent, & the server went out of her way to explain the menu choices & offer attentive but not pushy service. It was an excellent choice for dinner with an out-of-town guest - I would definitely go back.

Subeez Cafe891 Homer Street, Vancouver
still my favourite restaurant in Vancouver
Submitted Tuesday, August 7, 2007 - 3:04pm [Dine in]

I'm surprised by all the poor reviews for Subeez! It's been my favourite restaurant for years now, & my visit there a couple weeks ago was great as usual. The service is mediocre at best, but the food is great & the ambiance is even better. I had my favourite, the spinach cobb salad, which admittedly was not as good as it used to be - too much dressing & not enough gorgonzola cheese. However, my husband's meal more than made up for my choice - he had an asian honey glazed salmon that was THE BEST salmon I've ever tasted! We actually considered getting a second plate of it. Overall, it's a chic plate to take a date (100+ disc CD changer filled with eclectic music), the drink menu is pretty varied, & the food is great. I will definitely go back!
