Maruchu Japanese BBQ Dining4580 No. 3 Road, #2065, Richmond
The only place for Japanese BBQ
Submitted Wednesday, December 31, 2008 - 1:20am [Dine in]

If you like to cook your meat by yourself at your own pace, this is the place to go to. We get the cravings for Japanese BBQ at least once a month and this is where we come. The Kalbi is good ($10) and the Tontoro ($7) is my wife's favourite. Add a soup, a couple more dishes of meat and a cold noodle and we are fully satisfied. The place isn't too busy but give them a call an hour in advance just to be on the safe side. The service is standard but the food is tasty and interior is clean so it's a great place to take a few friends and happily grill away while downing a few beers.

Good Food minus the Service
Submitted Wednesday, December 31, 2008 - 1:11am [Dine in]

Having been to the one in downtown, we decided to give the one in Richmond a try. The place is a lot more spacious than the cramped downtown seating so it was a good start. We were seated and basically ignored for a while as they took their time setting up other tables. When we were finally able to flag one of them down, the server impatiently took our order. The short ribs and seafood pancake was really good. There was nothing to complain about regarding the food. I just wish that the service was closer to the standard of their food. Would go back again when I'm REALLY craving some good Korean food without service.

Guu in Aberdeen4151 Hazelbridge Way, #2790, Richmond
Nice izakaya in Richmond
Submitted Tuesday, December 30, 2008 - 3:44am [Dine in]

Having been to the Guu in Gastown and on Thurlow, we tried the Guu in Aberdeen. They maintain their standards of good food and nice atmosphere with this one too. The portions aren't dish and prices decent so you can try a lot of different dishes. This Guu seems to specialize in seafood but I thought the sushi was the weakest part of their menu. The sushi rice doesn't taste good at all and their Seafood Salad was sparse and not very fresh. Other than that, their cooked dishes were good. The Kakuni was soft & juicy. My wife liked Kalbi ribs and the Oden. We've come here for lunch a couple of times and for $10 you can get a full meal for lunch. It's not that busy at lunch time but their menu is limited so if you want the full menu without waiting for a table, I recommend going for an early dinner.

Kappa Japanese Restaurant1450 George St, White Rock
Good Japanese food in a house
Submitted Tuesday, December 30, 2008 - 3:35am [Dine in]

A friend told us to give this place a try so we went there for dinner. We were pleasantly surprised by this place. The decor is kinda scattered but the food was really good. I had a couple of the sushi rolls. The White Rock Roll is definitely one of my favourites. The Dynomite Roll was one of the best I've tried. My wife liked the Agedashi Tofu and the Tuna & Salmon Sashimi. The fish was fresh and the presentation was good. Service was okay and the menu is a little more expensive than some of the other places I've been to but you get what you pay for. Going to give this place another shot with some friends so I can try some more of their rolls.

Garden City Hot Pot Restaurant8788 McKim Way, #1205, Richmond
One of my DimSum Favourites
Submitted Tuesday, December 30, 2008 - 3:17am [Dine in]

Read about this place in the paper as a DimSum favourite and so I decided to give it a go. The restaurant is named Garden City Hot Pot but was pleasantly surprised by the Dim Sum. The Shrimp Dumplings & Pork Dumplings are plump and bursting with flavour. The Scallop & Ginger fried rice was also nice. We come here regularly now when we crave some Dim Sum. It's a little more pricey than other restaurants. Most of the Dim Sum dishes are about $5-6 each but you get what you pay for. Good fresh food and good service

A little overpriced Korean Food
Submitted Tuesday, December 30, 2008 - 3:09am [Dine in]

We had a craving for grilled pork ribs and the Korean pancakes so we had a friend recommend this place to us. The decor is simple with a couple of rooms & booths. Our servers seemed to be in the middle of their lunch when we went so service was sparse. The food was pretty good. The seafood pancake didn't have much seafood but it was okay. The pork ribs were grilled and flavoured well. Everything was overpriced for the quantity and quality of the food served. Lunch cost us $50 with the tip so unless I've found a new source of wealth, I don't think I'll be coming back.

Big portions for a hearty lunch
Submitted Tuesday, December 30, 2008 - 3:00am [Dine in]

Whenever I'm in Burnaby at around lunchtime, I find myself coming here to get a warm, hearty meal. Most of the lunches are around $8 so you can get a nice lunch for $10 including the tip. The portions are pretty big and there is enough variety on the menu so you won't get bored. My wife likes the Yakitori Donburi. I like the Pork Cutlet Curry. The lunches taste good and will give you energy for the afternoon.

Pho 99 Vietnamese Noodle House403 North Road, #302, Coquitlam
Not pleased with this PHO
Submitted Tuesday, December 30, 2008 - 2:53am [Dine in]

Recommended by a friend who lives in Coquitlam, drove out here to see if the place lived up to my friend's raves. Left disappointed. The Pho was not good. The soup had no richness to it. The sandwich that I ordered was cold and devoid of freshness. Too much salt & pepper to hide the lack of flavours. The prices aren't high so I guess you get what you pay for.

New Japanese Style Family Restaurant stylish
Submitted Tuesday, December 30, 2008 - 2:46am [Dine in]

Read about this place in a local newspaper so we decided to see what it was like. The place is clean and stylish. We went there for lunch and there were about 4 other groups in the 1.5hours we were there. Having worked in Japan for a couple of years, this place was like going to a Japanese family restaurant. The prices aren't high, the portions are enough and the flavour is decent. We had a really attentive server who constantly came by to refill our tea and take away finished plates. It is a nice place for a relaxing lunch without paying a bundle by English Bay. The pork cutlet curry was okay. It filled me up and it was neither great nor bad. Kinda like Japanese family restaurant fare.

Really good Vietnamese food
Submitted Tuesday, December 30, 2008 - 2:37am [Dine in]

A friend recommended this place to us and we've been going there ever since. The pork skewers are really tasty and flavoured really well. The spring rolls and salad rolls are good too. The soup for the Pho isn't always consistent though so sometimes it's a little sweet, other times it's a little salty. The decor isn't special with lots of plastic plants and things but it's clean and the food comes pretty quickly so it's a good place if you just want to eat good Vietnamese food without paying for the extras.

Best Xiao Long Bao
Submitted Tuesday, December 30, 2008 - 2:32am [Dine in]

Been here a dozen or so times when the craving for xiao long bao kicks in. They are the best here. Always order a plate for myself. With that said, the other dishes are solid but not spectacular. The DimSum menu is not that diverse, especially if you like eating lots of the steamed variety of DimSum. It's usually busy so I recommend going on weekdays or make it an early lunch (11am) to get a seat quickly.

Good affordable Ramen
Submitted Tuesday, December 30, 2008 - 2:23am [Dine in]

Have been to this restaurant twice and left satisfied both times. The prices are decent for the volume and flavour. The Shio Tonkotsu is probably the best of the ramens. My wife had the Miso and is was nothing to write home about. The gyo za is small but again decent. I thought the service was really good with attentive staff. I had a wait quite a bit for my ramen the first time I went and they gave me a free ramen coupon at the end of my meal.
