Good but not great
Submitted Sunday, April 30, 2006 - 4:41pm [Dine in]

Good restaurant to try if Amorosa is too busy next door. There are better greek restaurants around but this one isn't too shabby. It is a newly opened restaurant so decor is second to none. More of a modern greek ambiance rather than a traditional greek. Try to get a seat next to the plasma tv (but don't watch the Canucks as they'll ruin your dinner).

Food is solid, although I was a little disappointed with the dolmathes. Flavor was there, just a bit skinny in size. Prices are higher than Stephos but then again, most greek places are. Try their calamari caesar salad, has a little spicyness to it, pretty interesting.

Vera's Burger Shack1181 Denman Street, Vancouver
Nice piece of meat, lousy sides
Submitted Saturday, April 29, 2006 - 6:25pm [Dine in]

Been here a few times and have always enjoyed their burgers. I usually get the Vic but unless you are a big eater, don't try this at home (or at Veras!). Some of the reviews on here state that the burgers are expensive. Well for you penny pinching whiners who do not know a good burger when you see one, I suggest you go to Fets on Commercial and see the piece of meat you get for $10, what a joke that is.

Took my cousin from LA here and he loved it, proclaimed it was better than IN N OUT. Only reason I'm not giving it a 4 for the food rating is because the fries here are not very good.

Now for the slogan - Can't beat Vera's meat! I hear there's a challenger in town, Burgers ETC BBQ House. I look forward in trying their burgers real soon and reporting back to let everyone know if Vera's meat has been beat.

Will the real Pho please stand up, please stand up?

I read the reviews and thought - why are all the Pho Hong employees leaving bias reviews here? For the record, I am NOT a Pho Hong employee and I do not speak one word of vietnamese (except Phnom Penh, good chicken wings, but that's a whole other review to come). I decided to see what the fuss was all about so decided to check it out tonight. All I can say is, WOW GOOD PHO! I ordered the large spicy beef and pork pho (#14, the round noodle as stated by epicurious, who I do not know). Although it was not really spicy at all, the bowl of noodles was delicious. The beef was tender and it tasted like a pot roast done in a slow cooker for 10 hrs, the pieces just broke apart. Unlike Pho Hoa, you actually get a large when you order a large, plenty of noodles and meat. Pho Hoa just gives you soup. And to top it off, it only cost $6.50, tax in. I didn't think it would be that busy on a Sunday night but place was packed, which is always a good sign. Definitely will tell my friends about this one. The only thing I suggest to them is to get rid of the red carpet in the dining area and replace it with tile.

Nothing like a bowl of beef noodle soup
Submitted Wednesday, April 19, 2006 - 11:42pm [Dine in]

Stumbled into this place a few years ago after a round of golf and have never regretted it. The beef noodle here is amazing and what's even better is the soup that the noodle comes in. I must say, it is highly addictive. The potstickers are top notch, so much so that my buddy's wife made him get some after she gave birth. Beef roll is ok, a bit small for the price. I rather get another plate of potstickers. I'm not sure what all the fuss is about regarding the service. I mean, c'mon...it's a bloody noodle house. They are quite busy and not the quickest on the refill on water but as long as the food is good, it's all good. Decor is much better than when I first ate there as it has been updated and the fact that it is open 24 hrs means that I can go to Tom's video afterwards on a full stomach.

Da ta da da da...I'm loving it!

Great little family owned restaurant in N.Burnaby. I was amazed at how many people kept walking in the door after I sat down. Mostly regulars I would assume. Ordered the $2.95 breakfast special along with the two high pancakes and a hot chocolate. Hot chocolate was excellent, creamy and smooth and not watery. Food - solid! I always wonder how a place can screw up making breakfast. Unfortunately, there are such places in the lower mainland. Jane's is NOT one of them. I agree with the previous review, food is non-greasy. Don't waste your $ at McD's, come here instead.

Food so so

Nice ambiance but food was average. Ordered the blackened halibut with the pasta for the main entree and it wasn't done very well. Halibut was either overcooked or the quality of the fish itself was poor. It was a little dry and definitely too salty. The pasta that it came with was horrible. Talk about bland. I think the cook forgot the salt. I've tasted better at these prices.

Noodle Making 101

Had the 'golden fortune' of being recommended to this place and so far so good. I've come here a few times for lunch on the weekend but not yet for dinner. Like most shanghai restaurants I visit, I look for quality in the hot and sour soup and the potstickers. Although the hot and sour soup isn't the best I've tasted, the potstickers are one of the better ones. The owner also hand makes their noodles in front of you in the dining room and that in itself, is worth a visit. Needless to say, the beef noodles is always fresh. Also had the spicy szechuan beans, pan fried shanghai buns, and a few more of the shanghai dim sum dishes and all were very flavorful. To top it off, GRANDMA brings out free starters for all the tables which she makes herself (ie pickled radish, homemade shanghai style kimchi) which is amazing. Very friendly and hospitable family. Decor could be improved but as long as the food and service remains the way it is, can't really complain.

Went to Akbar's on a weeknight but didn't have a reservation and the place was packed. Wait was half hr so my friend suggested this little place on Fraser instead. From the outside, didn't look too inviting and on the inside, not much more inviting. It was recommended however by an east friend of ours so we both decided it must be half decent. Started with the meat samosas, wow, excellent. Ordered couple of the curries which came with rice and we added garlic naan and roti. Curries were very good, could have had a little more kick but not bad at all. Roti and naan very good. We didn't try the dosas but a couple next to us did and they looked huge. Definitely planning to go back to try the dosas. Service wasn't the quickest but it wasn't terrible either. You have to expect that sometimes for the small family restaurants. All in all, a solid restaurant with good food and prices.

Fat? Small more like it!
Submitted Saturday, April 1, 2006 - 11:02pm [Dine in]

I'm a big fan of Vera's so I wanted to try the competition just down the block. BAD idea! Burger tasted like it came from Wendy's. It was small and ordinary. Save your money and go to the fast food burger joints. If you want a real burger, stick with Vera's or Hamburger Mary's. Hell, come to my house and I could make you a bigger, more flavourful tasting burger. I was so disappointed with the size (it is called FAT isn't it?) that I sent them an email. What did I get? No response. Didn't surprise me because based on their burgers, they obviously don't value the customer's feedback. Only thing this place has on Vera's is the decor.

Little gem on Denman
Submitted Friday, March 31, 2006 - 6:23pm [Dine in]

If you are ever in the Robson/Denman area, visit this little restaurant as the lunch specials are one fantastic deal. For $5.50 (recently raised from $4.95, how did they make money?), you get choice of soup (wonton, hot and sour, or chicken cream corn), a good size entree (ie. chicken chow mein, beef & rice noodle, singapore noodles, curry chicken on rice just to name a few), and dessert (jello and fortune cookie!). Service is attentive and food is cooked to order so always hot and fresh. If you have room, try the potstickers. They are one of the best in town and in my opinion, better than Hon's (why does everyone like their potstickers???). Give this place a try. You and your wallet will not be disappointed.

Bang for your buck!
Submitted Friday, March 31, 2006 - 3:08pm [Dine in]

This is one of my favourite restaurants to go to. Service is excellent (fast on the refills), pop has fizz (try the rootbeer), and the pasta is fresh. The sauces are amazing with a wide selection to choose from. You definitely have to start with some garlic bread and the HOT chicken caesar salad. Be warned, this place is busy on the weekends (and weeknights ie. Monday night is kid's night where a kid can eat CHEAP!). Make a reservation but if you do forget and the place is full, just hop over to the greek restaurant next door and order your pasta dishes there (ha! same owner, they'll bring it over). This place kicks Anton's any day.
