I feel so bad for the person(s) that paid for their wedding reception here!
Submitted Saturday, May 25, 2013 - 9:58am [Dine in]

I attended a wedding reception that took place last week at this Kirin restaurant. The decor and ambiance is nice with the high ceilings, but that's about it.

Firstly, the service was extremely poor. At our table, there was 11 seats, 10 adults and 1 for my 3 year old. The reception was suppose to start at 7pm. At about 6:30pm onwards, servers started coming around asking each table if the seats were filled. At our table, 9 adults and my 3 year old was seated = 10 people. Servers kept on asking every 5 minutes if the 10th person (empty seat) would be coming. We honestly didn't know and asked why they were so keen to know. They said that they had to know so that they could get their portions right. That doesn't make sense. What if that person was going to be late?!?! Does the kitchen need to know right away if that person doesn't come or not? If there was going to be only 9 adults, are they only going to dish out 9 portions? Were they going to give a discount to the person that was paying for the wedding since one person didn't show up? How hard is it to make exactly 10 servings??? As it got closer to 7pm, the servers didn't back off so we told them that this person was coming.

When the food came out, the servers presented us the dishes and divided up the portions for us. OMG! For the price of the set menu, the portions were absolutely laughable. The cold platter consisted only of 2 tiny pieces of roast pig skin and a few strands of jellyfish. Small portions seemed to be the theme for the rest of the dishes. By the time we got to the 3rd dish, they didn't divide up the portion for my 3 year old. I asked the server nicely if they can give a portion to him, too. I guess the server sure didn't want to work that day as we glared at me and said, in the following exact words, "this menu is for 10 people. TEN people... There are 10 portions already divided up. This is not for 11 people... this is only for TEN people." OMFG!!! Chill... I was just asking a question. The server did not have to bark at me. At other wedding receptions I've been to at other restaurants, the servers would divide up the portions based on the # of people sitting at the table. Normally, it is for 10 people but if there is an extra person or a small child, they would usually give that person food, too. It's just that they would divide the dish into 11 ways instead of 10.

The only saving grace was the dessert. It was sweet peanut soup, coconut rolls, and deep fried red bean balls. They executed these well.

In addition to the food portions being tiny, the quality of the food was not up to snuff considering it was $1,288 per table. Other people on the table were shaking their heads, as well. For $129 per person, the wedding could have taken place at a nice hotel with high quality ingredients and a lot better service, etc. They definitely could have gotten a lot more if they had gone elsewhere.

If you're thinking of having your wedding here, think again!

Kudos to the Staff and Owner!
Submitted Tuesday, January 31, 2012 - 2:39pm [Take-out]

Last week, the day I went to pick up some Bonchaz buns was the day that it was pouring rain! Unfortunately, I had to bring my baby with me; luckily, he was sleeping and covered up in his stroller.

I wasn't able to go inside since I couldn't wheel him in due to the stairs at the entrance. I was trying to get the staff's attention by knocking on their take-out window but they didn't hear/see me. Fortunately, there was a gentleman who had just came out... I asked him if he was able to let the staff know that I needed service at the window since I couldn't leave my baby outside. He went back in and went behind the service counter and opened up the window for me. He told me that he works there but he must have just finished his shift, but he let the owner know that I was waiting outside. The owner quickly came over and apologized and offered to help bring the stroller inside but I declined as I had to be on my way. He got my order together quickly and apologized again!

For a small business like Bonchaz, there isn't much they can do in terms of accessibility since they're in an old building. But it's little things like their exceptional service... and delish bonchaz buns that will keep me coming back for more!

A BIG thank you to the owner and the other man who helped me quickly while I was in the torrential downpour...

Cannery quality without the Cannery prices!!!
Submitted Sunday, August 29, 2010 - 8:52pm [Dine in]

We were just there for dinner and the restaurant was fairly busy. We heard that the chef/owner was a former head chef at the Cannery so we wanted to check it out. We were not disappointed!

We had 2 of the Chef's Creations: 1 halibut anf 1 salmon; 1 ahi tuna, and 1 NY steak. All the dishes were all delicious, well executed, and very visually appealing.

Our server was very attentive and ensured that our glasses were filled at all times. He was very well versed with the menu and answered our questions with ease. We later found out that he used to work at the Cannery.

At the end of our meal, the chef/owner came around to each table to check with all the patrons on the food, etc. That was a very nice touch!

All in all, a nice evening with good food without the expensive prices to boot!

Go for the pan fried sticky rice!
Submitted Tuesday, May 11, 2010 - 9:02pm [Dine in]

I`ve been to this restaurant on and off for the last few years since my uncle knows the manager here. Was there again last night and had a 2 course alaskan king crab, deep-fried crab claws, the crispy fried chicken, e-fu noodles and, last but not least, the pan fried sticky rice!!! All the dishes were pretty good and were very good portion wise. I also agree with one of the previous reviewers on the mango pudding desert - it was rubbery and lacked the mango flavour... it`s not made with mango puree but rather with a jello type powder mix.

Unfortunately, I can`t relly comment on the value since it was complements of my uncle. But if you had to go here and order one thing, it would have to be the pan fried sticky rice... it`s so divine! Each grain of rice is nicely coated and separate - not mushy and very flavourful... LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!!

AYCE and hotpot, too!
Submitted Tuesday, May 11, 2010 - 8:50pm [Dine in]

Went there awhile ago with my hubby for dinner on a Wednesday night. We went there based on the reviews on this website. The rolls and sashimi were good and fresh. We opted to go for the hot pot even though it was very limited in selection. The only downside to the hotpot was that the items were cooked in water instead of a soupbase or broth, but no matter.

For less than $20 per person for AYCE, it`s good value for fresh food and good selection! We haven`t tried lunch yet but will be back for that soon!

Good food, good value!
Submitted Tuesday, May 11, 2010 - 12:37pm [Dine in]

My hubby and I are regulars to Angel. We have had breakfast, lunch, dinner, afternoon tea, and late night meals here. Heck, we even had our pre-Christmas dinner here.

You get good food, quick and efficient service and great value! Portions are pretty decent. Sometimes, we even have leftovers from our mini meal. You cannot go wrong for a full stomach on $7-8 - a meal and a drink!

We do not hesitate in recommending this place to anyone!

DOV 2010 - good value!
Submitted Tuesday, May 11, 2010 - 12:34pm [Dine in]

Went there with my hubby and baby for DOV 2010. The food was tasty and it was a good value for $18 for a 3 course. My hubby had the caesar salad, beef bourginon, and vanilla icecream with bananas. I had the tomato soup, chicken dijonnaise, and banana bread pudding. They were all so good. My bread pudding was a little too sweet but thank god for the vanilla ice cream to balance it out. Very yummy!

The regular menu does seem a little on the pricey side for the kind of food you get. Service was a little slow... perhaps not enough servers on the floor since there were 3 for a full restaurant.

What Happy Hour? False Advertising!!!
Submitted Friday, February 1, 2008 - 8:59am [Dine in]

My hubby and I used to go here a lot b/c of their Happy Hour Buffet for $12.95. We no longer go after what happened the last time. By the time we both got off work and got to the restaurant, it was 5:30pm. Happy Hour is from 4:30pm to 6:30pm.

We were promptly seated and was told that we had to order ASAP since it was last call for Happy Hour. I told the server the sign says Happy Hour's ends at 6:30pm and that there was an hour left. I asked her why and she said that that's their rule and that we were only allowed to order once. How can it be last call when it was only 5:30pm??? My hubby really had a craving for sushi so we reluctantly agreed. We put in a massive order to make up for the fact that we can only order once. The food came but a lot of the stuff we had ordered were missing. We got like half of what we had ordered. We asked a server to check up on our orders. He came back and said that they were coming. We waited 10 minutes and nothign came. Thus, we decided to put in an another order. It was around 6:00pm, well before the end of Happy Hour. We both watched the server from a distance. As he was about to put in the order, our original server grabbed our order and said some things to him we could not hear. But I could see that the order was not entered since nothing was entered into the computer. We asked another server to check up on our order. As we sat a little longer waiting for the remainder of the order from the first order, we gave up and left. Asked for the bill and, not surprisingly, that was brought to us promptly. We paid what was charged and left without a tip. Never going back again!!!

Where's my cut of the gratuity????
Submitted Wednesday, January 30, 2008 - 12:50pm [Dine in]

Had a great time last time so I went there w/ my hubby over the weekend for our 1st anniversary. BIG MISTAKE!
Our reservations weren't until 8pm due to DOV but figured it wouldn't be too busy. We were promptly seated & given our menus. 10 minutes later, our waitress came asking for our drink order. No smile, no small talk.
Appies were good. Waited 20 minutes for our steaks - I medium & my hubby medium-rare. Another server brought them & left. Didn't say "enjoy your meal". Waited for our server to bring some fresh cracked pepper... 5 minutes later, still waiting. She’s chatting w/ some other servers in a corner. Tried to flag her down but no luck. I saw a pepper grinder behind me & just ended up doing it on both our steaks since they were getting cold. Purposely left it on our table so that she could see how inattentive she was. I cut into my steak & discovered it was rare, not medium as asked. After a few minutes our server noticed the pepper grinder was still on our table & came to take it w/o apologizing. Since I hadn't touched my steak, she then clued in asking if my steak was cooked to order. I told her I asked for medium but came rare. She took mine to the kitchen to fix it. 5 minutes later, it came back more like medium rare. Still didn't offer pepper. By that time I didn't care. Too hungry! I noticed that it was a little smaller since the piece that I cut off originally to see if it was done was gone. W/ the lack of service, I was hoping that the steak would redeem them. WRONG! She even forgot our desserts & had to ask us again. Remembering 6 things isn’t too hard. After our meal, we wanted to go but our server was MIA AGAIN! We ended up flagging down a random server for our bill 10 minutes later. Our server finally brought our bill & mentioned that the mandatory gratuity that was already charged. HELLO?!? WHAT SERVICE? At least have the decency to mention that at the beginning or on the menu.
Even the live jazz music couldn't save our evening.
