Sabatino's Trattoria & Bar15355 24 Avenue, #950, White Rock
Really Nice Meal
Submitted Tuesday, June 2, 2009 - 3:45am [Dine in]

We visited Sabatino's for the first time last week and were very pleasantly surprised. Service was excellent, friendly and attentive, nice decor / atmosphere and the food was great. My fiance and I ordered a couple dishes to share, as we often do. The Mozzarella Alla Caprese was nicely presented, the fresh, homemade pesto a lovely touch. The linguini Pesto was delicious, tossed with artichokes and sundried tomatoes, pasta was cooked perfectly al dente, a really nice dish. Many menu items sounded great (lots of options for a vegetarian) we'll defintitely be back to give them a try!!

Sixth On Sixth Wonton House522 Sixth Avenue, New Westminster
Okay Chinese
Submitted Friday, May 29, 2009 - 11:47pm [Dine in]

We have celebrated my Grandfather's birthday at Sixth on Sixth for the past few years, as they reside in New West and seem to quite enjoy it. Food was decent, portions were huge we definitely walked away with ample leftovers. As a vegetarian there weren't a ton of options, I settled on plain chow mein, the mixed vegetables and chinese mushrooms (with a side of black bean) and an eggroll. Chow mein was okay, needed soy and black bean sauce for flavor, nice mix of vegetables, eggroll was decent, nice and crisp, not too greay like they so often are. My fiance enjoyed the almond chicken, others in our group were pleased with the sweet and sour chicken and pork, fried rice and chicken chow mein. Good black bean sauce, nice and garlicky. The complementry jasmine tea is a nice touch, overall I'd consider Sixth on Sixth a decent spot for Chinese in New West, probably better as a pick-up spot as the restaurant isn't much in the way of ambiance.

Not a Bad Little Spot
Submitted Friday, May 29, 2009 - 11:32pm [Dine in]

We were out in the Crescent Beach area and were looking for a place to grab some dinner when we stumbled upon Bella's. The interior of the restaurant is quite nice, an upscale pub / lounge, nice shady patio, perfect for a sunny afternoon or evening. The service was decent, a little slow, but friendly. We ordered the Bruschetta appy, which took an unusually long time to arrive but was quite delicious, we loved the balsamic glaze and basil pesto combination, we ordered ours with feta instead of goat cheese and it was really quite good! My fiance ordered a basic chicken burger, seved with both french fries and a side house salad, which was awesome, tossed with fresh melon, candied pecans, feta, dried cranberries and a delicious vinegrette! I tried the Chicken Pesto Fettucini (minus the chicken and pancetta as I'm a vegetarian) The chef tossed in lots of extra veggies in lieu of the meat, which was appreciated, dish was alright, the sauce okay, really didn't tatse the pesto in it, the pasta a little overcooked, but not bad. I'm not sure it was worth $18.00, was more than enough for me, but probably wouldn't satisfy a large appetite. Mango Mojito was awesome! I'd definitely return to Bella's for a lunch of Bruschetta and a House Salad, the highlights of our visit!

Wheelhouse Neighbourhood Pub, The12867 96th Avenue, Surrey
Not a bad little Pub at all!
Submitted Monday, May 11, 2009 - 10:13pm [Dine in]

We had never been to the Wheelhouse, but visited for a ball fundraiser and to watch a hockey game last weekend. We were really impressed with the excellent service we recieved, we always had drinks, and were never searching for our waitress. It was nice to see the pub was staffed appropriately for the busy Saturday night, ample servers, bussers etc. Dirty glasses and dishes were quickly removed from our table, not left as annoying clutter. Food was fast and very decent for pub food.....really good spinach and artichoke dip. All menu items were very reasonably priced and portions were quite large, we definitely took doggy bags home! The live band (after the hockey game) was quite good, nice mix of songs, were able to get the crownd into it. Atmosphere was good, your typical pub setting, overall we'd visit Wheelhouse again to catch a game and dinner!

An Average Visit to White Spot
Submitted Monday, April 27, 2009 - 1:12am [Dine in]

We've visited this location a few times now when craving a burger / veggie burger, food has usually been decent, nothing special, but okay, service has always been quite disapointing, our latest visit didn't really prove to be much different. Service started out really well, we were quickly seated despite the super busy restaurant, our server offered us drinks and took our order upon returning with our beverages. Appy arrived in a timely manner, was okay (zoo sticks) we loved the dip, would be better if all sides of the zucchini was breaded. Santorini Salad Feature was enjoyed, as was the Legendary Burger, my Fettucini Alfredo was quite average (not expecting an amazing pasta from White Spot) noodles were cooked well, dish was dry and needed more sauce, which was lacking in flavor. I requested a side of fresh parmesan to add a little flavor, which was forgotten, by the time I received the cheese the dish was cold and gluey. Seasoned grape tomatoes and sweet basil were a nice touch, but overall not a wonderful entree. Not sure we'd return to this location. It has become quite loud, and service is lacking.

Great Food! Excellent Service!
Submitted Monday, April 27, 2009 - 12:22am [Dine in]

We really enjoyed our dining experience at Katana. We we're quickly greeted and shown to our seats, as we had made a reservation. We were promptly offered beverages, our server was incredibly helpful and answered all our questions about the food and menu. Our party of 6 all ordered various Teppanyaki Entrees (all include a Japenese Onion Soup, Garden Salad, a choice of Steamed or Fried Rice, Mixed Teppan Veggies, Prawns and Jasmine Tea) The Fried Rice was fantastic, so flavorful, great texture, delicious. Our party really enjoyed the Japenese Onion Soup (I opted for extra salad, as I'm a vegetarian and the onion soup is made with a chicken stock) All our parties meat dishes (steak, chicken and prawns) were cooked and seasoned to perfection. Teppan Veggies were delicious, even my fiance who strongly dislikes broccoli, zucchini and mushrooms ate every veggie on his plate! Our chef Crow (not sure of the spelling of his name) was amazingly talented, we were so impressed with the show he put on for our group! We'll for sure be back and would highly reccomend Katana for a great night out with friends!

Waka Sushi Japanese Restaurant20090 91A Avenue, #C101, Langley
Really Good Japenese
Submitted Tuesday, April 21, 2009 - 1:22am [Dine in]

This was our first visit to Waka, we decided to give it a try after the restaurant was highly reccomended to us. My fiance loved the California Combo (served with 5 pieces of Nigiri Sushi - 2 salmon, 2 tuna, 1 prawn) We shared the Vegetable Udon, which was quite good with the house seasoning. Vegetable Tempura was excellent, great Panko breading, light and crispy, served with a teryaki sauce, delicious. All dishes were very nicely presented. Decor was great, staff was super friendly, we'll for sure be back next time we're craving Japenese!

Mixed Feelings!
Submitted Monday, April 20, 2009 - 2:45am [Dine in]

We tried Chop Chop again the other night (pickup,) the girl taking orders at the counter was super friendly and helpful, however the food was not as great as the first time we ordered from the restaurant. My fiancé really enjoyed the almond chicken and dry garlic pork again, the mushroom chow mien was also really good. We ordered the Cashew Nuts Gai Ding (without the chicken - basically veggies and cashews) and received Almond Gai Ding, which was rather uninspiring, sauce was bland and veggies were boring (mostly just celery and carrots.) We really did not enjoy the Egg Rolls, the filling was almost slimy. The black bean sauce was awesome, garlicky and really flavorful. Not sure if I would eat at Chop Chop again as a vegetarian, but for meat eaters, it's been consistently great!

Dragon Fort Restaurant2421 Pauline Street, Abbotsford
Really Odd and Negative Experience
Submitted Monday, March 30, 2009 - 2:45am [Dine in]

My fiance and I decided to try Dragon Fort as we'd read it had been voted number one Chinese food in Abbotsford for a number of years in a row, after the experience we endured we can't even begin to imagine why! We walked in, the building is quite neat (resembles a fort - one plus I suppose) interior design was quite typical of most Chinese food restaurants. We were offered a table in the nearly empty restaurant. It took quite sometime for our server to approach us, when she eventually did we hardly got two words out of her, she mumbled (quite literally, and barely audible) "what do you want to drink?" We ordered wine and two waters, she didn't say a word just walked away, returned about 10 minutes later with our beverages, plunked them down and stood at our table side staring at us not saying a word, we took this as an odd cue to place our order, we did so. We waited roughly 35 minutes (in this time I realized there was some odd jelly like, floating thing in my water glass) for our dishes to "begin" to come out. My fiance recieved his meal, then about 10 minutes later I recieved the "appetizer" I'd ordered (the strangest "spring roll" I've ever come across, it was almost the size of a 4x6 photograph, and contained some sort of seafood.....awful) I then recieved the noodle dish I'd ordered, and about 10 minutes later got the vegetable dish I'd ordered. By this time my fiance was long finished his meal, and I was so put off and well, disgusted by the terrible food and service, we got up, left the food on the table, paid our bill and got out of there! Maybe we caught the restaurant on an "off" night, but yikes!

Great Little Bar and Grill
Submitted Monday, March 30, 2009 - 2:19am [Dine in]

We've visited Lou's quite a few times now, and have yet to have a bad experience, food has always been good, service is friendly and efficient, good menu, something for everyone. Last time we visited they were rennovating, so the ambiance wasn't quite what we were used to, but service and food were still great. Good martinis! A little hard to find if your not familiar with the area, but a neat building and location! We highly reccomend Lou's for a great night out!

Probably Wouldn't Go Back
Submitted Monday, March 30, 2009 - 2:00am [Dine in]

We visited this pub in South Surrey a little while ago and found it to be very average. It was a Saturday afternoon / early evening, the place was quite busy and it was a bit difficult to find seating, but we managed to grab a little table, (we found the tables to be placed too close together, we felt like we were dining with the patrons next to us) It took the server a long time to notice we'd sat down, when she finally did she was sort of cold, and off putting, was really not very friendly or inviting throughout our whole evening. Food was nothing that exciting. I ordered the Baked Cheese Tortellini with Garlic Cream Sauce, was pretty blah (not that I go to a pub expecting a wonderful pasta dish) my fiances meal was okay. Overall, a fairly forgetable dining experience, there are many far better establishments to visit in the White Rock area.

Good Service, Good Meal
Submitted Monday, March 30, 2009 - 12:09am [Dine in]

It has been quite sometime since I'd been to Milestones, as my fiance is not a huge fan of their menu, so we decided to visit for a "girls lunch." Service was excellent, we were checked upon often, but not over served. Food arrived fairly quickly. I was really disapointed to see they had taken the awesome spinach and artichoke bread dish off the menu, it was one of my personal favorites, I always seem to find something great at Milestones, and upon my next visit the menu has changed, oh well! The Milestone's Garden Greens was a great salad, I loved the candied pecans and shaved Parmesan cheese. We gave the Baked Goat Cheese and Slow Roasted Garlic Flatbread a try, very good, a unique blend of dips / spreads, along with roasted garlic, delicious. Overall, a good experience at Milestones!

A Great Meal!
Submitted Sunday, March 29, 2009 - 2:08am [Dine in]

We dined at Baci a few nights ago and really enjoyed our experience. Service was impeccable, very attentive and friendly, the owner even approached our table to ensure we were enjoying our meals. Insalata di Pomodori e Bocconcini was delicious, we could really tell a quality olive oil was used, fresh basil would have made the dish amazing, but was still well prepared. Linguini al Pesto was delicious, the homemade sauce was awesome, and the pasta was cooked perfectly al dente. My fiance really enjoyed the Penne Bolognese. Homemade bread was great.....crusty and warm. Portions were HUGE, we took so much food home, would for sure share an appy and a main dish next time we visit!!

We tried Kolachy Co. for the first time the other day and were so impressed by the concept, great service and the product! I really enjoyed the Spinach and Feta Kolachy (just the right amount of garlic....loved the cream cheese in it.) My fiance ordered the chicken club, and also enjoyed it. What a great little lunch spot, perfect for a "gourmet" lunch on the go!

Such Better Experiences!
Submitted Monday, March 16, 2009 - 2:15am [Dine in]

We visited Red Robin quite sometime ago an had one of the oddest dining experiences ever, we were made to wait roughly fifteen minutes in the lobby while the restaurant was virtually empty, the service was awkward and the food very average. Our latest Red Robin experience was substantially better! Our last two visits to the restaunt we were quickly seated, service was attentive and friendly and the burgers were great! My fiance really enjoyed th A-1 Peppercorn Burger. I ordered the Bruschetta Chicken Burger (sub a veggie burger patty for the Chicken as I'm a vegetarian) and it was awesome, loved the pesto aioli and provelone, the balsamic cream was such a delicious addition, served on grilled cibatta, it was an excellent burger! Fries were hot, and the Freckled lemonade was great! We're not huge "chain restaurant" fans but overall we definetly think Red Robin when looking for a good burger and decent ambiance!

Taverna Greka Waterfront Restaurant326 Columbia Street, New Westminster
Excellent Service
Submitted Tuesday, March 10, 2009 - 11:26pm [Dine in]

We visited Taverna Greka for a girls lunch this week, after hearing good things about the restaurant from a friend. The location is great, right on Columbia street, parking was not a problem, as it was the middle of the week, I'm sure it is a bit more difficult on the weekends. The restaurant features a neat atrium, (with live plants etc, typical of a Greek establishment) overlooking the Fraser river, nice and sunny! The service was impecable, efficient and friendly. Our meals arrived quickly despite the large buisness lunch party in the back room. Value was great, all lunches include rice, roast potatoes, Greek Salad and Pita bread for between $7.50 - $10.00. I ordered the Spanokopita and opted to skip the potatoes and rice for extra Greek salad, the dish was good, not the best Spanokopita I've had but not bad, could have used a little more garlic and seasoning. Others in our group thouroughly enjoyed the Jumbo Prawns and Fasolada Soup. Overall a decent lunch, not the best Greek we've had, but it's tough to judge a restaurant on one dish!

Our Go - To Chinese Restaurant
Submitted Sunday, March 8, 2009 - 11:56pm [Dine in]

Whenever we are feeling Chinese food we give Ken's a call for takeout! The food is always hot, fresh and tasty, my fiance loves that he can get combo meals for one (I'm a vegetarian, so am not much fun in the sharing department!) Their chow mein is awesome, great spring rolls and Ken and his wife are so sweet and friendly. As mentioned in the previous review, the formica countertops and '60's style bar stools all add to the retro feel of this little restaurant. Would definetly reccommend Ken's Cafe for authentic Chinese cuisine and the warm, friendly service!

We really enjoyed lunch at this new location, service was friendly and efficient, lots of sandwiches and homemade salads to choose from. I tried the Grilled Vegetable Sandwich with pesto mayo and provelone, and a greek salad, both were really good. My fiance ordered the Grilled three cheese on Cibatta and also enjoyed it. We liked how they have everything made up (fresh daily) in the deli coolers so you can see what you're ordering, lots of great looking sandwiches, wraps, pastas ..... they really have something for everyone! We'll definetly be back for another great lunch!

A Cool PLace to Check Out
Submitted Sunday, March 8, 2009 - 11:18pm [Dine in]

I held my fiances 25th birthday party at Schanks a month or so ago, which turned out to be a good night, not really thanks to the help of the staff at Schanks, more so just for its atmosphere and the number of things to checkout / do. I'd initially emailed the event coordinator of this particular location requesting a reso for 20 people, for a suprise birthday party, and requested to be contacted via email (as to not ruin the suprise) the event coordinator from the Calgary Schanks ended up phoning me and leaving a message on our home phone confirming the booking of my "Christmas Party?" Not really sure where that came from or why I'd been booked in at the Calgary location? Anyway my fiance heard the message and pretty much figured out what I was trying to plan.....didn't really appreciate their complete lack of comprehension as to what was going on. When we arrived they had a table set for maybe 12 (not 20) so we were running around the bar trying to find seats for the rest of our party. Service was painfully slow, they had one server helping all 20+ of our guests and she was often hard to find, I agree with the previous review....order two drinks at once! I personally didn't order food, but those in our group seemed to enjoy it, your typical pub fare. Schanks is all about the atmosphere, an exciting place to catch a hockey game, but I wouldn't go expecting much in the way of warm, attentive service and great food!

A Neat Little Spot!
Submitted Sunday, March 8, 2009 - 10:50pm [Dine in]

Located in the main building of what's left of the old B.C. pen The Pen Cafe is a cute little breakfast / lunch spot. We've been to the restaurant a few times now, and have quite enjoyed it each time. The Quesidillas are huge and really good, yummy sandwiches and great breakfasts. Service has been really good everytime we've been, last time we visited the chef / owner personally delivered our entrees, as well as came back to ensure we were all enjoying our meals, a much appreciated added touch! Bars on the windows, the thick stone walls, the history of the pen and some of its' infamous inmates are all quite interesting, my Grandfather was a head guard at the prison in it's day, so we really appreciated all the history! Overall, a great place for a weekend breakfast, or a quick and satisfying lunch!
