Simple, but delicious
Submitted Saturday, May 2, 2009 - 11:36pm [Dine in]

The food here is very similar to Fresh/Juice for Life in Toronto which I loved going to. Lots of different rice bowls to choose from. From reading previous reviews, I prepared myself for indifferent service, but it actually was pretty good. The restaurant felt very peaceful and calm, unlike the bustle of the Naam. The food was really delicious and it is nice to know you are eating something that is both healthy and tasty.

Mmmm....
Submitted Saturday, May 2, 2009 - 11:32pm [Dine in]

We got there just before 5:30pm, and just as expected, there was already quite a line-up outside. Once the restaurant opened, we were lucky to get one of the last tables available. Service was very quick. Right away we had menu and water, plus complimentary chai (yummy!) and some other small tidbits. The lamb popsicles were just as good as I had heard- sopped up every last bit of the curry and the lamb was so tender. The duck was okay...it didn't have that duck flavour I hoped for- sort of tasted more like chicken. Both dishes had exactly the right amount of spice- hot, but not overpowering. Vikram was there greeting everyone - he wasn't quite as warm as I imagined, but pleasant. Service was great- very quick to bring more rice & naan, fill glasses, etc. Would definitely come again.

Nice place, but pricey
Submitted Saturday, April 11, 2009 - 11:03pm [Dine in]

Very lovely place with a beautiful view of the Victoria harbour. I can see this place being packed during the summer. The menu looked delicious with wonderful sundae, milkshake and float concoctions. Had a sundae called something "sneaker" I think- vanilla and chocolate ice with caramel and pecans. Yum yum. Ironically, the Rogers chocolates that were placed on the sundae were my least favourite part. Overall, nice experience, but very expensive- sundaes were $8-9, floats and milkshakes $5-6.

Delicious pho
Submitted Thursday, April 9, 2009 - 5:16pm [Dine in]

Went here for lunch. The decor is below average, could definitely use some updating. Have a good assortment of pho, small $5.99, large 6.99. Service was very fast. Had the beef brisket/flank pho. The meat all looked the same to me, but it was tasty. Pho was delicious. Good sized portions. Will return.

Decent

Have a lot of lunch specials around the $10 range. Meat was flavourable and juicy. Greek salad was tasty though I don't know why it is in such a small bowl. Pita was kind of dry and didn't have much flavour. Rice was decent, pototoes could be more lemony. Overall, decent value for what you are getting but there is room for improvement.

It will do, but not my favourite

Parking lot is shared with car dealership, so there isn't much of it. Had to park on a side street on the other side of the highway. Busy busy place on the weekends. The dumplings are gigantic and tasty. Taro balls, which I usually enjoy, were very bland. Green onion pancakes were not very good. Most of the dishes were pretty standard. Prices are reasonable, but not the cheapest out there.

Everything is so beautiful in this store. It was very busy, but there were lots of staff who were very friendly. Love love loved the Crispy Hazelnut chocolate- a beautifully crunchy mix. The butter croissant was nice and crispy with the right amount of butter flavour and surprisingly not greasy. Can't wait to go back and try some more creations!

Went for Dine Out- I'm just going to cut straight to the food. Appies- the goat cheese salad had a huge round of goat cheese on it- breaded and melted, yum. There were lots of choices for the salad + antipasto combo. Mains- good size, though there could have been flavour to the beef. Didn't care much for the fries- I think it was the oil they fried them in. Prawn dish was HUGE. The desserts....amazing. Creme brulee could have been a bit more creamy, but was delicious all the same. Lemon tart was beautifully tart and lovely. Would try this place again.

Had no idea this place existed
Submitted Wednesday, January 28, 2009 - 11:30pm [Dine in]

Ended up at this place through sheer luck....live near by, but had never heard of it, or realized it existed. Was there on a Friday evening- it was pretty dead. We pretty much had the server to ourselves, but for some reason, service was quite slow. The organic salad looked amazing with a good variety of fruits on top. I had the steak sandwich- it was massive. Tasted delicious with the sauteed mushrooms and onions, though someone else thought it was a bit salty and It was hard to eat as the steak was so big and was hard to chew through in some parts. It is quite good value- where else can you get a good sized braised lamb shank for $14?

Better than the average pho joint
Submitted Monday, January 19, 2009 - 9:57pm [Dine in]

The restaurant decor and furniture is definitely nicer than most pho places that I've been to. The spring roll/pork/vermicelli combo is awesome. So is the pho- tasty soup, perfectly done pho. Big portions, very reasonable prices for these dishes, in the $6-7 range. The only minus is that the rice dishes that I've seen come out leave something to be desired- something that looked like a stirfry and another one was a porkchop? Anyhow, it looked a bit like something the average person would cook up in their kitchen which is not a compliment. Stick to the pho or vermicelli and you will not be disappointed!

Toonie rolls are way to go
Submitted Friday, November 14, 2008 - 9:29pm [Dine in]

This isn't a particularly innovative idea, though maybe for Vancouver. There were plenty of joints that sold sushi rolls like this (i.e. not cut) in Australia when I was there 7yrs ago. The rolls at Michi aren't that big- I don't think I'd pay the regular price of $3.50 for one of these. I thought the lemon/avocado/prawn roll was very good- very good sized prawn and the flavour was delightful. Stick to the toonie after 4:30pm special.

Above average budget sushi
Submitted Friday, November 14, 2008 - 9:26pm [Dine in]

Quite surprised by this joint. The sushi rolls are bigger than average- two rolls were more than enough for me. Prices are not the most inexpensive, but good value for the portions and quality. Staff were surprisely attentive- tea was refilled a few times which can sometimes be lacking with other like sushi restaurants. Would definitely go back.

Cheeeeeese
Submitted Wednesday, November 12, 2008 - 1:41pm [Dine in]

I haven't been to the other locations, but I loved the ambience and cozy atmosphere or this location. You just feel like you are sitting in a log cabin- perfect for a dreary Vancouver day. The gooey grilled cheese sandwich was to die for...it was just pure cheesy goodness. I also tried the French onion soup- loved the cheesy part- I think I forgot that maybe I don't like French onion soup, because the broth was quite salty and not quite to my liking. Burgoo was maybe a tad expensive, but the portions were large, so not bad value.

Dim Sum- Yum yum!
Submitted Sunday, October 19, 2008 - 10:52pm [Dine in]

Very typical Chinese restaurant. Have been for dim sum a few times here- the standard dishes such as the shrimp dumplings, rice rolls, and egg tarts are exactly how I'd expect them to be. Authentically Chinese. Very reasonably priced- last time I went, we had six people, we ate to the gills, had some leftovers, and paid about $10 a head.

Food could be better
Submitted Friday, September 19, 2008 - 12:48pm [Dine in]

It was a Wednesday night and this place was packed full of students (there was even a line-up outside at about 8:45!), even though it is a big space. The ambience was pretty typical for a pub. The prices were decent. Had the 25cent wings which was the special for that day- they were pretty puny and the taste was just average. Wouldn't go out of my way to visit again.

Best Ethiopian so far
Submitted Tuesday, May 13, 2008 - 11:17pm [Dine in]

My partner and I ordered the Lalibela combo which was a combination of their veg and non-veg combos. Perfect for 2 people and very reasonable at $22. Good variety in the different items brought out. Enjoyed the food here more than the two Ethiopian restaurants I've been to on Commercial Drive. Some of the items were a bit spicy, but not too much so for us. The staff was friendly, yet ignored us after the food was brought to the table.

Forever to get food and it wasn't even good
Submitted Monday, April 28, 2008 - 11:14am [Dine in]

The restaurant is beautiful and looks really up-scale. I was quite excited about the food. I ordered the top sirloin since they seem to be known for their steaks. The complimentary bread was amazing- warm and melted in my mouth, yum. The caesar salad was also very tasty. Then came the main course...oh boy. Everything was cold, the steak was overdone and tasteless. The mashed potatoes were also kind of burnt and tasted terrible. I was so disappointed. The server was nice enough, but the food came out so slowly. I would not come back here, waste of money.

Wouldn't come here again
Submitted Friday, April 18, 2008 - 3:34pm [Dine in]

The mansion setting is the best part of this restaurant. The food is pretty average. The bread they give you was probably the tastiest thing I ate. The lobster ravioli tasted a bit undercooked and wasn't worth the $22 I paid for it. My friends ordered some kind of appetizer plate and it was a lot smaller than expected. Wouldn't come back here again if I can help it.

Can't complain
Submitted Friday, April 18, 2008 - 3:27pm [Dine in]

For the price and the amount of food you get, I really can't complain. It is easily two meals for me. Penne Bombay and the something Antonio are both favourites. Note that they don't give you bread automatically now- you have to ask for it. Maybe there was a lot of wastage? I might come here more often if it wasn't for the big lines- it is probably best that way anyways since I don't want to get too chubby, haha.

Could have been so much better
Submitted Wednesday, February 13, 2008 - 12:31pm [Dine in]

We went on a weekday- when we first arrived, the restaurant was only about a quarter full. Meat came fast and furious. I found the meat to be salty (in a good way) and very moist. The salad bar was better than I expected from reading the reviews here. Quite a big selection, and there were even a few hot dishes. The restaurant started filling up, and the meat stopped coming. Only two meat servers taking care of the whole restaurant. We actually just stopped eating because the food was coming too slow, not because we were super full. Also, they never brought around the more exotic meats such as bison, chicken hearts and ostrich- is this just on the weekend? Quite disappointed with that. Very difficult to flag down a server for drinks or bill. With better service, and more types of meat, this could have been a great meal.
