Licorice-tasting soup
Submitted Sunday, July 19, 2009 - 4:22am [Dine in]

Went to eat here with a friend and we ordered item number 1, the thick noodles and beef brisket. Beef brisket was really tasty, the noodles were standard to most bbt places. I dind't like the soup at all. Maybe it was just that batch, but it had a licorice undertaste. We ordered small, and it was the right amount. Didn't leave hungry or too full. On the downside, we had to ask for tea refills. If you go there for lunch, go at around 11:30 so you can beat the 1 pm rush. When we got there only a few tables were filled..at the end of it, everything was packed. I probably will not go here again.

Fatty PORK!
Submitted Sunday, July 19, 2009 - 4:16am [Dine in]

This place is packed, even late at night. Line-ups go out the door, so there's usually a 10-15 minute wait period until you get a table. There are 2 other ramen places nearby so based on the popularity, this must be the best. I've tried the shio and shoyu ramen, and shio definitely wins as my favourite. The boiled egg is so tasty...I really wonder what they marinate it in. I've had medium and fatty broth. I wouldn't get fatty broth every again because I was surprised at the amount of floating fat balls I had. In one spoonful of soup, there'd be about 15 fat blobs floating. There isn't much ramen in each bowl, but something about it makes it so filling. I don't know if it's because it's made of egg. I can usually only eat 1/2-3/4 of my bowl. The pork is excellent..probably the best pork I've eaten. The fatty pork is rich and tastes the best. Definitely recommend the place, but don't go there so often unless you want clogged arteries.

Mm..free mackeral!
Submitted Sunday, July 19, 2009 - 4:11am [Dine in]

My boyfriend and I had the seafood udon and japchae. Both were really worth it for the price! Total bill came to about $22 and we were both so full, and had plenty of leftovers to take home. Before our orders came, we also got the complimentary mackeral...it was so delicious. The actual menu price is about $6 so I wonder how they can afford to give every customer one of these. The seafood udon had TONS of seafood in it...we totally were not expecting that. The udon was sooo delicious. I'd say the taste was better than that of yakiudon from authentic Japanese restaurants. The japchae was a little too soft for my taste. I prefer Cho Sun's japchae because it's more chewy. My only advice is don't let the menu scare you off ... the pictures don't do the food justice.

Hi Genki Japanese Restaurant6680 Southoaks Crescent, Burnaby
decent for a retirement home
Submitted Sunday, July 19, 2009 - 4:06am [Dine in]

My sister kept raving to me about this place so I decided to try it with my boyfriend when we were in the area one day. It was pretty easy to find, as well as parking. I ordered the deep fried chicken teriyaki donburi. It was different for sure...it had large purple/greenish leaves all over the rice (didn't care too much for the taste), large portions of chicken and rice. I couldn't finish it so I just ate the chicken and left about 1/3 of the rice. My boyfriend ordered the sashimi bento. His comments were that it was good, but that it was comparable to other Japanese restaurants we've eaten at. We also got the potato croquettte...it came with a sauce that tasted like Lea&Perrins sauce. It was okay but kind of pricy. I wouldn't order it again. For tea, we had to flag down the waitresses...the place wasn't that busy but they weren't that attentive. To get the bill, we had to wait 10 minutes too. For 2 ppl, bill came to about $28. I probably wouldn't go there again because there are other places in Burnaby that I prefer. Ambience...there's none to speak of. But what do you expect for a retirement home? It's just a place for some home-cooked style comfort food, I guess.

Great dessert!
Submitted Sunday, July 19, 2009 - 3:58am [Dine in]

Everytime I come here, I always order the traditional Pad Thai. The rice noodles are cooked to the best consistency, and the taste is always consistent every time. You can't go wrong with any spicy dish you order. I don't remember the names of what I've had, but every spicy chicken dish is excellent. I should probably get the biggest reason of why I come here...the deep fried banana with mango ice-cream. Even after eating so much food where I feel like I can eat no more, the deep fried banana is a must-order! It's so light, refreshing and delicious. The oil is always changed because it's a crisp light golden yellow, not a brown colour seen in other places that deepfry.

I went here with my boyfriend and we ordered some type of seafood combination noodle (I can't remember the Thai name on the menu). It was made with egg noodles and had very generous amounts of prawns and squid. We ordered a spicy chicken dish which was cooked with plenty of red and green bell peppers and onions. Both dishes were delicious. There's a nice view of the water from the inside, the place is clean, and the servers are attentive. You don't need to flag them down to get a refill on water like other places. Food is great! Very comparable to Thai House.

so-so

I'm always up for trying places that make their own noodles so my friend and I decided to go try the place. The dumplings weren't great...I don't know why they're so popular. There was too little soy sauce and sesame oil. How is that enough for 10 dumplings? Their were also fruitflies in the restaurant, and one of them landed on one of our dumplings. The noodles are decent; they're not the best but they're worth it considering cost. A small bowl of noodles is plenty for one person. A small is about the size of a large bowl of pho. The soup seems to have lots of MSG because I got really thirsty while eating the noodles...and it didn't go away til a few hours later. It's really flavourful, but I wouldn't drink it. I try to eat the noodles only which is a waste sort of. The noodles on the otherhand are chewy and have a good texture to them. I like the place gives after a meal. Coffee or milk-flavoured, yum.

Pho Van3370 Fraser Street, Vancouver
for a very tasty bowl of bbq chicken pho
Submitted Monday, December 29, 2008 - 9:50pm [Dine in]

I used to frequent this place quite often until their food quality went down and price went up. Their rice noodles seemed to get very yeasty/mushy too quickly, and their soup was filled with msg that I was thirsty after just eating the residue that was on the noodles. I stopped going for awhile, but recently went back because my bf and I craved viet food at 10 PM and we agreed to never go back to the 24 hour joint Pho Hoa on Kingsway. It turned out to be good again - this time I was not as thirsty even after having some spoonfulls of soup, and the chicken order pho I got was not rubbery and "plastic"-like textured like the last time I remembered. Not that it affects taste, but the funny thing about this place is that they have the most inconsistently sized noodle pieces ever, some are thick and others are egg noodle thin. I'm going back to frequenting this place again. I've also had the combo bowl - I find that skimp out on the quantity of meat given in the bowl, despite the higher price.

Samurai Sushi House5888 Cambie Street, Vancouver
biggest and best teriyaki rolls around
Submitted Monday, December 29, 2008 - 9:38pm [Dine in]

I've only ordered take-out here, and I usually stick to the beef and chicken teriyaki rolls. I had my first taste about 3.5 years ago and this is still probably my favourite place to come to for teriyaki sushi rolls. Sometimes service can be really slow (one time waited half an hour for a four roll order), so it's probably best to call in two hours early (5% off with this). They also have tea that you can take as you wait for your food, so sometimes it's not so bad. I've heard and read about some pretty nasty things about this place (health inspector observed cooks not washing his hands after going to the bathroom and smoking) but what can I say...I will continue to go for the humongous portions and cheap deal!

consistently bad service
Submitted Tuesday, May 13, 2008 - 7:28pm [Dine in]

I came here on several occasions and each time I am not impressed with the service. I come here on occasion probably because it's in a very convenient location. The waitress seated us but didn't bring us a menu until we asked. The green apple green tea bubble tea was very tasty, and so were our orders - the only downside was our food came waaay after we got our drinks. Second time was with my cousin and we didn't have a very pleasant experience. They gave us the wrong order, took a very long time, and were not friendly. I think the place is staffed by a family and their friends/relatives (very much lacking in service!) The place was not busy when we arrived. There was only one other table seated, yet we had to wait 10 minutes for our drinks to arrive. The food took even longer, even with few people there at the time, and they still managed to mess up our order. We cancelled one of our food items as our order was messed up and the waitress gave a look with so much attitude as if we were the ones who made a mistake. Bill came out to be close to $30 and we left very unsatisfied. Don't order the siu mai (very expensive for only 4 tiny pieces) The only good thing I can really say about this place is that they will pack up your bbt for you if you cannot finish it.

good food, poor service
Submitted Tuesday, May 13, 2008 - 6:55pm [Dine in]

Great deals on take-out (25% off on pick-up!) and AYCE late-nite. The service is poor but I keep coming back because the food tastes good and is comparable to other Japanese restaurants, and is also cheap. For ayce, food is brought fast and hot. But sometimes they totally skip out on your order and bring half of what you requested. Beware of a young woman who works at the front - she doesn't smile and has a bad attitude.

EXTREMELY generous portions of pho -- delicious too! not too soft, the chewiness is just right. The prawn spring rolls were tasty too. Service is fast and servers are polite. Definitely recommend this place.

Submitted Sunday, January 28, 2007 - 11:48pm [Dine in]

the first time I came here with a friend, I ordered an udon bowl and she ordered gyozas and a roll. her order came in 5 minutes, while mine took half an hour. I even had to remind the server just in case they forgot. Because of this LONG delay, we just watched each other eat our own dishes at different times, not an enjoyable dining experience. Another time the server did not give change. They assumed I was tipping $4 for a $6 item. Everytime I've been here, I've had a bad experience. But aside from the poor service, the food is actually pretty tasty, which is why I've come here again.
