A colleague took me and my husband here for dinner one night and was such a hit that we actually used this place to cater a work lunch a few weeks later and now work in an office full of Simba fans.

Simba's is pretty small and there are not a lot of tables but it's comfortable and welcoming. The servers are friendly and know what they are doing and the owner is a gem!

The food is excellent - we had the Chicken Swara and the Simba Chicken and both were absolutely delicious. I cannot remember what we had as appies but whatever it was was delicious too. Desert was this mixture of riccotta cheese and other ingredients and it was excellent too.

Dinner was amazing, the service was very welcoming and the ambiance is cozy so we'll be back for sure. This is defintiely a place that we will also be bringing friends to :)

My husband and I met another couple here the other night and I wish that we had taken the slew of negative reviews serisouly and gone somewhere else instead.

The two of us arrived first and as we were talking with the hostess a server came up and barged into the conversation to talk to her about somethign else. So we stood there awkwardly while they talked about something else. We were led inside and had to stand awkwardly in the doorway while another server accosted the hostess. This was a small area and we had other servers pushing past us rudely. We definitely felt like we were imposing! Anyhow we asked to sit in the heated patio instead because it was overly loud inside.

Our friends were running late so we orderd calamari to share and it was terrible. It was long rubbery strips of squid (think chicken strip size) with an oily breading that crumbled off and wasn't good. Our friends arrived and we waited ages to place drink orders. All of the drinks came pretty quickly save for my husband's. Apparently they forgot to make his. Our server came to take our dinner order and just as she was about to start, she ran off suddenly. She came back five minutes or so later appologizing that she "plays this game where she has to write things down as they come in to her head" and she had gone to write for a few minutes. Three of us ordered the truffle mac & cheese and my husband ordered the fisherman's fry even though the server couldn't really explain what was in it.

The mac & cheese was absolutely awful and completely inedible. It was basically oily pasta covered in a crunchy cheese crust. The sauce had sunk to the bottom of the ramekin and was a congealed mass of gross. I make this at home and the reason that it was so bad here is that it was premade and then allowed to sit for ages before it was baked. The right way to make it would have been to have the sauce premade and then cook the pasta fresh to order. Barely any time and a way better result - this was just laziness and poor execution on the kitchen's part.

So lousy service and horrible food aside, let's look at the atmosphere. The decor is your standard trendy Vancouver lounge - black and white damask with splashes of pink. Loud bass heavy music and nothing special. There was a birthday party a coupel of tables over and as the evening went on they got more and more obnoxious to the point that people were standing up shouting that "everyone had better take an effing shot". A guy who seemed to be part of the party snuck onto the patio through one of the curtains and got into a really loud shouting match with "shot girl" too. Tacky!

Anyhow this is definitely not a place that I would suggest for a meal. There is a decent (if grossly overpriced) drinks menu so I'd say this is more of a club without a dancefloor and I'd only suggest going here if people cannot decide between a loud bar or fast food . . . (and really a burger from McD's would have been better . . .)

Loved the Idea Until I Got There
Submitted Monday, November 26, 2012 - 4:01pm [Dine in]

I read about this place when it first opened and I thought it would be great to try. My husband and I really like doing tasting plates for dinner once in a while and so we thought it would be fun to do it on a "gourmet" scale. I made a reservation to surprise him and told him to just drive to Gastown and then follow me.
He got pretty nervous when I began walking down Blood Alley and we both had second thoughts when we saw just how sketchy the area was but then we saw the signs and knew that we were in the right place.

Remember how I said that I had a reservation? Well our table was a tiny end table with the end of a long bench on one side and a chair on the other. The people at the next table had been joined by a surprise guest and so our table for two had become a table for one and we were told to "just squish in". Ummmm no. We reserved a table for two not a table for one with strangers in my lap. Once we saw their prices that settled it. We opted for something else. Call me old fashioned but I like going to places where I get a proper table.

They Practically Tried To Force Us In The Door
Submitted Monday, November 26, 2012 - 3:46pm [Dine in]

A few months back my husband and I were downtown and looking for a place to have dinner. It was pouring rain and Coast had an outdoor host stand in the heated patio right in front of the doors. I waited there while my husband parked the car and was completely ignored by the hostess who kept wandering around. All of a sudden a man came rushing up and literally took hold of my arm and began guiding me inside. I explained that I wanted to wait by the door for my husband and he insisted that I be seated right away. He pulled me over to the main host stand and told the hostess to seat me. She rolled her eyes and said that she was busy so he tried to flag another host down and was brushed off with an "I'm busy".
At this time my husband had come in and after finding out that there was actually a half hour to forty five minute wait we decided to go somewhere else. The man who had "brought" me inside earlier got really upset when we said this and he told us that the only other nearby place was the Italian Kitchen which he also owns and that it's just as busy. He insisted that there was nothing else in the area and that by the time we found another place we would have already gotten a table here. He got so agressive about it that even if we had decided to stay we wouldn't have enjoyed it because we would have felt bullied.
And as soon as we got ourside we discovered that he hadn't quite been honest with us. There was a great Japanese place next door (Kobe), we were seated right away and we had a really good time there . . .

The Only Thing I Missed About Ontario And It Followed Me Here!!!
Submitted Monday, November 26, 2012 - 1:43pm [Dine in]

I used to be a student in Ontario years ago and a friend suggested that we go to Cora's for breakfast. I had never heard of the place but I figured why not. And I discovered the greatest breakfast eatery ever. When I moved back to BC I made sure to go there one last time and I was a little sad that I'd never have an April 89 crepe again. And thus began numerous kitchen attempts to recreate them myself. (Didn't work. I wound up substituting liquors for water and made "boozy" crepes instead lol.)
A few months ago my husband and I were in Coquitlam and I saw the cheery yellow sun sign and insisted that we go for breakfast there.
Ok so the decor is a bit cheesy and it's noisy. But the food is worth it! People have been complaining about the prices; they are standard and are actually a great deal when you look at the mountains of fresh fruit that you're served here. Nearly every dish comes with a variety of fresh fruit (no canned fruit cocktail or wedge of old melon here) and anyone who has worked in the food industry will tell you that it's an excellent deal.
The dishes themselves are great. We usually opt for one savory item and one sweet so that we don't have to choose lol.
Really if you want a cheap breakfast then there's always IHOP or McDonalds. But if you're looking for something that is fairly healthy and of good quality then this is a very good choice.

"Our" Pub
Submitted Monday, November 26, 2012 - 1:30pm [Dine in]

Husband and I are relatively new to Port Moody and we like to have "our" pub so the search began. This place is great! The full time servers are fantastic. I think they have part time servers on Sundays because that's the only time we aren't given impecable service - still decent but not amazing.
We like to stop here on the way home from the office and we are always seated right away and our servers offer more drinks before we've gotten to the bottoms of our glasses. The service is great!
Husband and I are both impressed that we can actually get proper black and tans here as well as black and golds and crown floats. These are basically layered beers and they're hard to find!
The food is almost always excellent. I'm not crazy about the lamb sliders but that's because I don't like lamb lol. Their nachos are amazing as is the Steak and Guiness pie and the turkey brie sandwich.
They do have a few TV sets here but they aren't obtrusive so you can watch a game without being bombarded by it.

A Favourite!
Submitted Monday, November 26, 2012 - 1:21pm [Dine in]

My husband and I tried this place on a whim. We had just moved to the area and were out for a walk and decided to have dinner here.
Wow. I LOVE this place! The atmosphere is quirky and elegant. Basically it reminds me of what I think the attic in an art gallery would be like. There's so much to look at and it's pure awesome. The service is outstanding. We are usually served by the same woman each time and she is fantastic. She and the other servers know the menu very well and make coming here that much more enjoyable.
The food is excellent. My husband likes to try new things every time we come here and I like to stick with my favourites. We've enjoyed everything from the crab cakes to the steaks to the deserts.
This isn't really the place for someone who doesn't like slightly quirky; it's a place with personality. It's not a stuffy establishment with a muted grand piano in the corner and whispering servers nor is it a loud trendy place like Joey's or Cactus Club. It's a place that's romantic, whimiscal and pure magic. Definitely keep it in mind for a special night out!

This place had us running for the washroom :(
Submitted Monday, November 26, 2012 - 1:05pm [Dine in]

I used to go here for AYCE sushi and it was good but it's gotten progressively worse and I'll never go here again. My husband and I went here for the absolutel last time a few months back and now we tease each other about wanting to go here again (NEVER!).
We had noticed that one server in particular was just plain rude. He's a tall Asian guy with redish hair and barely speaks and does not make eye contact with people. He slams tea onto the tables hard enough to splash and doesn't check to see if people want anything else etc. He seemed to always be there whenever we went and we always left a little annoyed at his lack of basic good manners.
Anyhow the last time we were there we noticed that some of our food tasted a little different but we thought nothing of it. Within an hour of leaving we were both violently ill and wound up missing a few days of work with food poisoning.

They won us back
Submitted Wednesday, February 29, 2012 - 5:07pm [Dine in]

I recently submitted a review about a horrible experience that we had here a few months back. We filled out the online experience form with a request not to be contacted and the manager sent us a gift card and asked us to please return again. Well we did and we were really happy with our experience. We both had ribs and they were delicious. Our server was excellent and there was only one obnoxious birthday party there that we actually didn't mind because we weren't already put off by crap service. Our server was actually excellent and we will be back there again when we get an appetite for ribs. Well done!

A Longtime Favourite
Submitted Sunday, February 26, 2012 - 12:55pm [Dine in]

I started coming here just after this place opened in 2006 and it's been a favorite ever since. They have a very good selection of gelato (laughed when I read the review that claimed that they didn't - 20+ options not enough? Really?) and other deserts. I am a pretty picky eater and the only time that I was disappointed here was with the creme brûlée because it was not hard on top. Other than that, this place makes delicious deserts and drinks.
The service is what it is; counter service. Everyone is friendly and efficient and they don't mind waiting for you to decide between the various options. And even though this place tends to be very busy, it is also kept very clean.
The atmosphere is good and is definitely geared towards either a fun evening out with friends or a nice après movie stop. Their prices are a bit high and to be honest I can understand why. This area has a lot of students who like to order the cheapest items and then take up a table for hours to use wifi. High prices tend to deter this.
To be completely frank here, I do not understand the slew of bad reviews. And given how busy it usually is here, I'd guess that a lot of other people like this place too.

Love It!
Submitted Sunday, February 26, 2012 - 12:25pm [Dine in]

We tired this place on a whim one night when we had planned on going to India Bistro downtown Vancouver but didn't want to make the drive. What a great evening!
As we walked inside, we were greeted by an older Indian man in a suit and a fedora. He was thrilled to see us and we were sat right away even though the place was pretty busy. The servers don't seem to have specific tables and they all look after every table they walk past. Their service was very friendly and it was nice to go to such a welcoming place.
Soon after being seated, another older man began playing a guitar in the corner and singing old jazz songs. He was really good! And the servers had fun stopping to sing with him too - very cute.
The food is incredible. We had a chicken appetizer to start that was delicious and then we had butter chicken and chicken korma with rice, naan and roti. The portions were very good sized and so we stopped before getting too full so that we could have desert too. They have traditional Indian items and also a really great cheesecake that was surprisingly low priced. We left with enough food for another meal and definitely planned on coming back.
We went back the next weekend and they actually remembered us! We were greeted by Sir Fedora again, had excellent service again, enjoyed great music again and had another delicious meal.
We used to swear that India Bistro was the absolute best but this place is just as good, closer to home for us, has free parking and has exceptional service. If you are looking for Indian and like jazz then this is the place for you. The only thing that I would change about this place is the lighting as candles or dimmer lights would make this place absolutely perfect but that's just me being picky. I love this place!

Used to be good . . .
Submitted Tuesday, January 31, 2012 - 5:57pm [Delivery]

I have been ordering from this place for years and used to love it. The food was great and of a good value and the service was good too. My last experience was so terrible that I actually created an account here just so that I could tell you about the terrible service.
I always place my order online and then they call to confirm everything so my address is not a secret. They even charge me a little extra becasue I am beyond the 10km delivery radius. This has never been an issue in the past.
We orderd from here a few weeks ago and the food was not as good as it had been before. We were a bit perplexed and a little put out becasue we had been telling the friends who were over for dinner that this was the greatest place ever. They told us about a place that they order from and we confidently said that this was the "best" Chinese food they would find here. It wasn't great and we were left eating our words (with our not great food).
We decided that maybe that had just been an off night and so we ordered from tehm again this last weekend. After we had confirmed the order, they called us back to remind us that extra charges would apply because we were a little farther out and we agreed.
The delivery guy told us to "never order form them again" becasue we were too far for him to drive when he arrived ahead of schedule. We explained that we had been customers for years and he said that was impossible becasue he had never delivered to us before. He said again that we should never order from them again and left.
I called the manager to see if there was a problem with our order and he said that we were farther and had been charged for the additiona distance. I asked why we had not been told that we couldn't order and he just kept saying that it would cost us more money.
Considering the fact that their food isn't as good as it used to be and now we have rude delivery drivers on top of it, I don't think we'll be ordering from this place again.
