mandatory tips with RUDE servers
Submitted Monday, November 16, 2009 - 11:08pm [Dine in]

Okay I've always wanted this go to this place to try. I knew that it's a pricey restaurant before I went in. But hey! The prices were still HIGHer than I expected (crazy). I loved the show that the chef gave us, our chef was funny compared to the chef next to our section of tables. It's great to see the show for ONCE even tho it was incredible, but let's be real, we don't want to spend almost $100 for 2 ppl to see a person throwing foods and fire around in front of you all the time.

Food was not bad BUT consider the expensive prices, I would get so much better food somewhere else.

Okay here comes the part WHY I'm giving it a 2 for value and 4 for ambiance when I could give it a 4 for value and 5 for ambiance.. BECAUSE of the RUDE service they had! Honestly, those servers DO NOT deserve any tips at all. The tips are mandatory therefore they do not care giving out attitudes since they can get money anyway! I was really unhappy about giving any tips to them due to extreme bad services and attitude. Before we even finish our meal, they just quickly started cleaning up and setting up. They wanted to push us to finish up eating and leave so they can turn the tables around. (you will know what I mean when u get there) You might think we could be just eating slow... sorry but they started rushing us RIGHT AFTER the COOKING SHOW was over!!

Anyway, what I hated the most was the service or else I would love this place. I may sound extreme here. Just wait till you try this place.

Lastly, I think it's a good place to visit once. Once, enough!

big diappointment
Submitted Monday, September 7, 2009 - 8:19pm [Dine in]

I knew that this restaurant might disappoint me just from reading the comments below. But I thought why not give it a try since I was in Whistler for Ziptrek and Bungee Jump.

So I was really happy after I did my first bungee jump and thought having cheese fondue for the first time as a little celebration!

First of all I have to say that I didn't like it when I stepped in the door when the server greeted us. He was emotionless I'd say. I didn't feel welcoming but I thought hey I don't yet, just wait till the end!

So the menu was a bad design (as a designer I like checking out restaurant menus), little disappointment there already. The prices were... well high but affordable for 2 people in their 20s. (traditional cheese fondue with 2 min order per fondue is $26/person which means if you want to eat it, at least pay $26 x 2 = $52 + tax & tips) Anyway, we ordered it anyway just to try since I've been always wanted to try for years!

Here, a basket of bread came, alright not too bad. THEN the vegetables came.... HUGE disappointment! just RAW broccoli, RAW cauliflower and carrots!!?? So here's what we had: a plate of raw vegies + bread + pot of cheese with very BAD after taste to it! Then we decided to order the cold cuts by adding $14.95! Just because we wanted some meats!

The plate of meats came with some pickles... I don't know what to say anymore. All I can say is that the food SUCKED!!

One more thing I want to point out here is that the service was HORRIBLE! I am NOT kidding you here! Especially the manager guy was absolutely NOT loving his job. He had no smile on, he had no friendliness at all! And the other server was a BIT better BUT still BAD consider that this restaurant is a PRICEY french restaurant I think I should expect a lot MORE than what I got here.

Definitely a NO-NO to all of you!

first time visit
Submitted Tuesday, March 10, 2009 - 9:40am [Dine in]

Before I write my review, I read (well skimmed thru) the comments below. I find that many of the comments are 2 ends. Either very good or very bad. So I don't know whether my comment of my one time visit will be helpful.

Anyway, so my frd and I went to S last Sunday. Before we went, my coworker told me that S is got great fancy look outside but inside ain't that great. But both of us thought she was wrong. We thought the decor is way better than the look of outside. It's quite big and quiet since there was only about 1-2 tables inside. The service was good and attentive. We didn't want to expect a lot whenever we try new restaurants.

So we had seafood chowder which was better than we expected. It's got a lot of seafood inside and the portion is fairly big. The bread with Italian style Balsamic vinegar+olive oil was nice. My entree (seafood linguinne) was pretty good, tasty and not bland. My partner's new york was a bit disappointing though. We could tell that the meat was not a good quality steak and we asked for medium rare but it came out pretty cooked and a bit chewy. Their mashed potato was quite different than other places, they got we believed it was yam and potato. Not bad. But the other orange looking thing on the side of the steak was weird. Not so tasty.

The dessert we had was bailey something brule, nicely presented and tasty :)

The bill came out and it was about $75 including tips and tax. We didn't order any wine. It's a bit pricy in our opinion since the steak was $30 and wasn't even good. The seafood linguine was $20 but can have sth else better with that price. The bailey brule was $8 and it was tasty so it was okay.

We would still go back with bunch of frds since they have place for big groups. But go back for the food? Maybe if the price ain't that high. Or at least the quality goes higher.

good with frds but not for service
Submitted Tuesday, March 10, 2009 - 9:16am [Dine in]

My friends and I used to like going there for drinks at night. They have private rooms where you need to take off your shoes kind of place. They have some main dishes like pan fried noodle, rice, and etc. Also tapas style, small dishes and BBQ skewers.

Their food isn't bad at all. In fact, I like their yakiudon (pan fried japanese noodle) and it's got food price ($8.99 I believe). Their drinks however, aren't stable. I mean that by sometimes the drinks (the soju cocktails) can be very different at times. More alcohol or more lemon and the amount of the drink is usually different. It's frustrating sometimes. Their skewers and korean soup and food is good too.

The thing I hate about this place is however is the service. Not all the servers have bad service but quite a few of their "waitresses" are really MEAN and not polite. Quite many times we went there and sat down, we don't get service right away, it's ok since they can be busy sometimes. BUT when the lady (usually it's the same lady who's got rude attitude) gave us water and side dishes (the salad and oden soup) she was like NO smile (fine) and put down the cups real hard (like BANG). We were surprised when it happened. And whenever we order, she's got this "so what do you want huh?" kind of face. It's hard to explain but many of us stopped going for long just becuz their service is very inconstant and not so good.

However, I'd still go back to have drinks with friends or just for their food. On a side note, they open night which is great for Coquitlam and Port Moody people :)

DOV 09
Submitted Monday, February 9, 2009 - 2:52pm [Dine in]

It's got a nice view and cozy place with energetic atmosphere. Went there for DOV 09 with 4 friends. We were happy with our appetizers: the candies salmon salad and the scallops and prawns springrolls. However, when the mains (we all happened to order the same dish) we were very disappointed. We had the maple glazed sable fish. Tho the fish was really good in texture, no taste otherwise. It was like a vegetarian dish which it wasn't. To me, it was: fish on top of the pastas and TONS of peas in it! It was tasteless. Disappointing entree. Desserts were not bad at all. I had the bread pudding it was yummy and the rum caramel was awesome. It's got raisins and I'm not a fan of them so I just took them out. Some had the white chocolate cheesecake, it was pretty good too. Great to come back. WIll recommend and go again with buddies.

Submitted Monday, February 9, 2009 - 2:46pm [Dine in]

We had a group of 7 girls for a dine out. At first the place was empty and we thought, oh no, might not be good cuz nobody's here. But the service starts off great. Our server was definitely friendly and helpful.

The food was not bad tho one of our friends warned us about the food not being too good. However, the girls were happy about the place. The food was great. The Mac & Cheese was good but nothing WOW and I couldn't finish it. The baby spinach salad was not bad but just an average salad. The crab fritters were not bad, tasty but little bit dry. At the end, the dessert was SO GOOD. OMG and it was SO TINY! We were not happy about the dessert becuz it was too good to be that tiny! It was a 4-course menu so not bad! We were all pretty full.

Submitted Monday, February 9, 2009 - 2:39pm [Dine in]

It was GREAT! One of the best DOV so far. We all pretty enjoyed EVERY dishes we had. The atmosphere was energetic. The service was friendly and funny and the food was awesome. I loved those oysters, the steak was one of the best steaks we tried from DOV and the creme brulee not better than what I had in other place but still yummy. It was fully booked and the restaurant was busy like hell but the server was still very attentive. We'll go back again for sure! I didn't find the piano too loud but the place is definitely too crowded. We were sat right beside the walkway to kitchen and out. We were super close to the tables surrounded us. The wine pairing was just ok. Loved the atmosphere tho. One more thing, we had reservation at 830 but weren't sat until almost 9! We had to wait near the entrance for our table to get ready, not pleasant but forgivable since they were packed and super busy.

Okay I dunno what to say about this place. First, it was extrememly hard to find cuz it's in a dark back alley! The place IS like a ROOM but not bad with its theme (huge chalk board to be their menu, cute). I knew we were going to eat meat & cheese. YES MEAT & CHEESE! But mine had too many olives and pickles (my bad choice). It was very interesting place but won't go back since we're not fans of meat&cheese type of thing. The server wasn't friendly and not attentive either, she seemed busy, no smile and rushed around. Anyhow, I would say it was only an one-time dining experience :)

I have been here only once but it was a great experience after a long walk on granville island. The seafood was yummy altho I find some of the mussels weren't that fresh. Loved the prawns! The service was really friendly and helped us on deciding what to get since we just wanted to try a few dishes with right portion. Overall we finished everything, the atmosphere is nice, love the big sofas and wooden tables. The place is busy and so a bit noisy but didn't bother me at all. Infact, it feels right since it's on granville island :) Great place to try! Definitely recommend and will go back!

Been there about 4 times now. I remember the first time I went in, I was impressed by the interior and the atmosphere. It's such a great place to come with lovers or friends for gatherings.

The food was awesome. I remember the satay skewers and seafood pastas were so yummy. I was impressed by the tasty food as well. I was really happy with the quality of the food.

Service, nice friendly and attentive! They got some hot waitresses too!

I would definitely go back and definitely recommend to my friends! It's such a great place to go. And the parking is easy here too! (unlike in vancouver, here's free and plenty)

Okay. Again it's a not bad sushi place in Coquitlam area. Been there few times but stopped going now. Even tho the food isn't bad but need to wait a long time to get service, food and bill. At first coming in thru the door, you do not get attention right away, or 5 mintues afters you came in. Perhaps the place is too big for them to see customers coming in.

I do like their sushi and udon and their combos but its' too pricey plus the bad service and the long wait. Now they're not as busy as before too. Not sure if it's their service that got them or what. Im sure it's not the food.

huge line ups why?
Submitted Monday, February 9, 2009 - 2:12pm [Dine in]

I think the answer to it is, the location, the huge portion and the price.

FOOD: not bad, huge portion, good to shares with friends.

Service: they are always busy so not that attentive, just so-so.

Would recommend to friend for a try. I still go back sometimes when I want Greek food. Since there are many greek rest that are too expensive for the small portion they provide.

FOOD: not bad, tasty but a bit salty for my liking. Bubble teas are yummy. Not much of complaints about their food but the small portion and the prices.

Service: standard. Just friendly and OK.

Ambiance: they have great interior for a Taiwanese restaurant instead of typical asian restaurant look. Nice music and clean place. (washroom is very clean!)

Overall: I go there sometimes with family or friends. It's not bad to try for those never been there. SInce there aren't many restaurants like this in Coquitlam.

Submitted Monday, February 9, 2009 - 2:05pm [Dine in]

I go there sometimes for both take out and dine in. The negative part about it is the wait and the bad service. Also the packed small place with long line-ups.

The food isn't bad for party sushi. I'd definitely come here to order take out if I have party at home since the portion is big and the price isn't too much.

Tho they are usually understaffed and provide bad service, I do agree with the comment below that, people who are regular customers and always/usually leave without getting tips. Guess what, those don't deserve great service. I hate bad service too but it is SUPER rare for me to leave without ANY tips at all! Even if the service is bad and may not come back, I'd still give 10% or little bit less. It's like a bad cycle. It goes on. I'd rather give it a good start then and something good in return. UNLESS they're SO DUMB that after few "good starts" they still dunno what service means. THEN why bother going there and give no tips? JUST go somewhere else!

Submitted Monday, February 9, 2009 - 1:51pm [Dine in]

My mom and I used to like going for dinner here. Their tofu soup with rice were really good. But now the quality seems may have gone down and we stopped going for a long time.

The service is poor. Even though they can't really speak English but at least they should know what POLITE attitude means.

The place is small but not jammed inside. JUst hard to find parking during dinner time. Also the traffic there kind of suck too!

Would recommend to friends tho.

been here only once, don't want to judge it base on my one time experience. But here's what I think about this place from my experience.

We had a group of more than 10 people. The service was not nice, they seemed like they didn't like us cuz we were such a big group and bunch of young 20s. I'd say the servers didn't know HOW to put a smile on their faces when their jobs is SERVE. (HEY I'm a waitress myself and I like interacting with customers)

The food was just alright. It's Hotpot! It's just the usual stuff for hotpot other than more seafood than other ALL YOU CAN EAT hotpot places. But we won't go back. None of us wants to go back again. Not for any of the service, food, and price.

Won't recommend!

I would like going there for the noodle once in a while. But I wouldn't say "wow it's SO good you should definitely go"

The noodle and beef tendon were standard, the soup was a bit salty for my liking.

The service was just ok, not that attentive, you have to flag them down sometimes.

They used to be busy and have line ups, not sure about now since I don't go there anymore. (I live in Coquitlam)

Still a good place to eat once a while, so I'd recommend to friends.

Submitted Monday, February 9, 2009 - 1:38pm [Dine in]

Okay I have been to this place a few times with different buddies. Each time I went, the less quality of cakes that I had. OH MY GOD. The most recent visit was last week with 3 other people. We wanted to have some desserts and this place was the only place that open late during the hours. My friends said this place ain't good but I said it's not bad let's try again. But after the puffed cream cake (forgot its name) I don't' think I want to come back again. I rather get a cake from other bakery. The cream on the cheesecake was OLD and HARDEN and EWWW. Did I mention that it was $7.95 for one not tasty piece of cheese cake? The break part was... you could taste that the cake has been sitting in the fridge for a frigin' long time for people to spend money on it to eat it. I have tried my friends' tiramisu and hazelnut cheesecake. They were just ok too. BOTH OLD! Unbelievable! I won't say "it's not bad, let's try again" to anyone again.

Submitted Monday, February 9, 2009 - 1:32pm [Dine in]

went there for DOV08. I can't really judge this place since I've been there only once and it was DINE OUT too. But as for my DOV08 experience, I did not want to go back. We had a group of 4 and we knew that the portions are going to be huge. We could never finish if we ordered all 4 meals individually. So when we said we want to share 3 for 4 people and might order more if not enough, we could see the unfriendly kind of "WHAT?" in her eyes. We rather not waste food not becuz we wanted to save money.

Food was quite disappointed since Boathouse is always famous and we have heard good comments about it. The steak was just average, prawns were not bad. Appies were not memorable. The desserts were SCARY. I love cheesecakes but guess what, all 4 of us couldn't even finish ONE among all 3 desserts. The cakes were unpleasantly big to be an ending dish. I felt like puking after eating and I did not even try to finish the cakes!!

Services: not bad but busy so they kind of rushed around and we felt a bit ignored. Maybe cuz they thought we were cheap for sharing dishes. So I still decided to tips them better than 15% so they wouldn't feel as bad.

The view is awesome. U see the water and birds etc. Beautiful!

Dun think I'd go back, if I go back, then I'm going to try other locations but not this one in Port Moody.

I went to this place a few times and only the first time was the best. I had a good impression on it. The seafood platter was not bad but I did not agree with the portion since the price isn't that low! The coconut rice was not bad but nothing memorable. The drinks were good! Service was standard. Place was full when I went.

I would still go back but not as often as I wanted to before. But I'd recommend to my friends.
