Honestly, what is the appeal of this place?
Submitted Sunday, November 19, 2006 - 9:45pm [Dine in]

I went here for Sunday brunch. There actually wasn't a line up at all, which really surprised me, so I was initially pleased. However, we stood in the doorway for what seemed like hours before either of the three (yes, three) servers standing at the counter chatting away noticed my husband and me. We were finally and reluctantly directed to a table.

We each ordered an omelette with hash browns. I had heard such good things about the breakfast menu here that I was still quite excited for the arrival of our food. It ended up being the equivalent to anything you could get at IHOP (although I think IHOP could do a better job). I had noticed our plates sitting on the counter for a while before our server grudgingly cut her conversation short with another staff member to bring them over to us. Overall synopsis: cold, bland and really disappointing.

More points taken off due to the drink I ordered and had to remind our server twice about getting for me - she acted so breezy about it, like it happens all the time and it's no big deal. I for one am getting tired of these trendy establishments that favour style over substance. Won't be going back.

Bad food, bad attitudes
Submitted Sunday, November 19, 2006 - 9:27pm [Dine in]

My sister and I went to this Sammy J. Peppers location a few weeks ago, thinking it would be as good or better than the Burnaby location. We were dead WRONG!

The moment we arrived, I had a bad feeling. We were seated near the back (which was very poorly lit) and I got the feeling we were going to be pretty much forgotten about because all of the other customers seemed to be crowded around the bar watching sports on the tvs. Alas, I was right, as our server didn't come around for a good 15-20 minutes. He was personable, but that didn't excuse the fact that we sat there for that long without even a glass of water.

I ordered a cheeseburger with onion straws, which on paper sounded awesome. The food didn't arrive for close to 1/2 hour, and by this time we were ravenous. The burger looked good when it arrived, but I noticed that the onion straws were burnt and there was no mayonnaise, relish, no toppings really whatsoever on the bun. ????? The bun was dry, not to mention the burger patty. I honestly think a Quarter Pounder at McDonald's would trump that pathetic burger ten times over. The fries were not bad, though.

We got our bill and headed up to the bar to settle up. We stood around waiting for another ten minutes until our server came up. By this time we were not impressed. My sister needed change, but for some reason our server had disappeared so she asked another server if she could get it for her. This server took my sister's money, handed her the change and just walked away. No "thank you", no "have a nice day", no nothing.

There is absolutely no excuse for such poor service. I won't be going back, and if I have my way, neither will anyone else I know!

Wildly inconsistent
Submitted Sunday, November 19, 2006 - 8:53pm [Dine in]

My friends and I went to Eastside Mario's last Saturday afternoon. We decided to give it another chance as the first time we went there, when it had just opened, the pasta was quite tasty and we loved the free and unlimited bread and salad with our meals. However, both times I've been since then have not been nearly as satisfying.

Avoid the pizza, unless they have made improvements since it first opened - I asked for extra cheese, but it looked like maybe a handful had been sprinkled on, not much to begin with, let alone extra. The dough was quite heavy, and just not what I would expect from a place with such an appetizing-looking menu. The sauce was cold and tasted like something out of a can.

The linguine tetrazzini was ok, but I could have heated up a microwave dinner and had better. The bread we received was rock-hard. It's quite disapppointing, I think some improvements need to be made.

great food everytime!

The food is great and the service is fast and friendly at Mr. Ho's. I love Chinese food, and I am quite a snob when it comes to how I like things made. Mr. Ho's has not dissapointed me yet. Everything on the menus is great and there are so many choices, I can never decide what to order. The ambiance is a little drab though, but I don't usually go to restaurants for the ambiance. I want to leave full, and not broke, and I can do that at Mr. Ho's. You can guarantee I will be there again and again :)

Food is always great. Ebi mayo anyone! So damn good. Scallops and mushrooms (can't remember what dish is called) is also amazing. We go all the time, and have never had a bad meal. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone :)

Good food, tad too much flair
Submitted Sunday, October 8, 2006 - 2:23pm [Dine in]

As a resident of Nanaimo, coming to Vancouver is a treat. Since Nanaimo is a smaller city with limited restaurants, I'm always excited to try new things here on the mainland. Applebees is my sister's favorite, so we usually end up eating there to make her happy. I find the prices a bit high, but most restaurants these days seem to be hiking the prices up. The food is always delicious and I always leave full. Even though my pants barely fit when we leave, there's always room for dessert! Try the maple blondie and you won't be disappointed! I do find the service to be a little over zealous, but I guess it's better than crappy service. One waiter literally jumped in the booth next to my sister to take our orders, which was a bit much. I guess they have to have a certain amount of "flair" to work there, but I think it could be toned down a bit.
