Good food.... No Awesome Food
Submitted Tuesday, March 15, 2011 - 10:21am [Dine in]

My review is a few months late but I was here in the later part of December (2010). A friend and I had heard about this place for a few years now but never got the chance to check it out. I must say, the years of waiting was well worth it.

I had the 'Charbroiled Burger' while a friend had the 'Chicken Burger'. We also got an order bbq chicken wings and spicy wings which were amazing might I add. The burgers were executed very well. The burger was big, properly cooked with the right amount of "juicyness". Will come back for sure!

A much needed replacement to the old restaurant it replaced called La Fourchette. New interior, new friendly staff, new owner, and most importantly ..... new delicious menu!

The food is fresh, flavorful, and plentiful while the prices range from good to fair. Not too expensive but not cheap. They feature daily specials and soups which never seem to disappoint.

Things to try if you have never been:

- Classic Burger (fresh beef patties made daily and cooked using the grill/bake technique)
- Chinese style BBQ Beef on rice.
- Japanese Curry Chicken
- Cajun Chicken Burger
- Chicken Pesto Linguine
- Meatball Linguine

There are many more to list but these are some of my favorite items on the menu. I usually go there 2-3 times a week.

Updated Review after many months
Submitted Friday, November 7, 2008 - 12:19pm [Dine in]

Okay, I've been coming here at least once a week if not more for many months now. The food is good but I'm not impressed with the service. I wrote a review below a while ago but this is an update.

The food here is still above average to really good. I've been ignoring their "lack of service" because the food usually made up for it. But now I'm sick of it. I ordered over the phone and they told me to show up in 15 minutes. I show up and wait in line. When it's my time, I tell the cashier I'm here for the pickup. He's a little confused and can't find my order. They tell me to wait. I step back and let them help other customers. I see a few ppl place an order and receive their food while I'm still standing there looking like a jackass. None of them acknowledge me or even bother asking me why I'm just standing there. Finally 23 minutes later, they tell me that they lost the ticket that had my order on it. GRREEAAATT!!!
So, they lost about $40 to $50 worth of business from me per month. That's $480 to $600 per year.

First and Last visit
Submitted Wednesday, October 24, 2007 - 11:10am [Dine in]

I had a birthday and had reservations 3 tables (6 per table). When the first batch of 13 people got there, one person was left standing for about 15 minutes as one of the tables was still not available for us.

Once everybody got there, we went for the All You Can Eat. I've been to 4 sushi places so far but this is probably the worst one yet. The food was average if not below average. The service was TERRIBLE. We had to get up and chase the employees once in a while and I also had to get up myself and grab some cutlery from an "Employee Area Only" as nobody was really willing to help me or they were REALLY forgetful.

I felt embarrassed inviting all these people to this place. I will not be coming back here.

Having experienced Solly’s for the first time today, I can safely rate it a solid “B” for blows. The service was exceptionally poor and the taste of the food even worse. The pickle tasted like a wax candle stored in a bucket of salt for 100 years, the bagels tasted like lawn clippings, and the overall presentation was a sloppy mess. I wouldn’t recommend this place to my worst enemy.

My 1st Keg experience started here
Submitted Wednesday, October 3, 2007 - 9:59pm [Dine in]

The very first time I had the Keg was the summer I graduated in 2003. I was a broke student back then so I didn't even order a steak :-( haha
I order some sort of "Salmon and Rice". It tasted alright but nothing special. I give this place 4 out of 5 not based on my first experience but the second experience up to this date.
Each and everytime after my first Keg experience, I order a "New York Peppercorn" in medium-well, which is my favorite steak done just the way I like it.
Maybe I get lucky or these guys are good, but it tastes Great each and every time. The staff are friendly, the atmosphere is nice, and food is always good. The downtown location does seem to get busy during the evenings but thats expected.
I would and will continue to come and visit the Kegs.
So far I've been to the New West, Burnaby, Granville Island, and Downtown location with nothing really to complain about so far.

Came here for a X-Mas work party
Submitted Wednesday, October 3, 2007 - 9:48pm [Dine in]

I came here with people from my work and all expenses were paid for ..... wooo hoooo!!! I didn't abuse it though.

I've never had a "French Onion Soup" before so I tried that for an appetizer. I don't know how it's supposed to taste or even look like so I don't know how to rate that. It tasted just fine to me but I wouldn't order it again because it's not my thing but it didn't taste bad or anything.
The steak was great as always. "New York Peppercorn" - medium-well.
Service was good and we were placed right by the fireplace. I wasn't really paying attention to the decorations and ambiance but it seem fine to me.
I would come back here but I won't because this particular location is an inconvenience for me .... but it still gets 4 out of 5!!

My late night trip to the New location
Submitted Wednesday, October 3, 2007 - 9:41pm [Dine in]

They have a new location now, so close to the old location I didn't even realize it.
I've been to the Burnaby location 2 times now. The first time was the old location about 2 years ago and then again in September 2007 at the new location.
I ordered what I always order at the Keg .... the "New York Peppercorn" ... medium-well.
So far, each Keg that I have ordered this steak was bang on, on how I wanted it. There was just a little bit of pink in the center and just the right amount of sizzling hot fat on some corners of the steak.
The new location looks great, the service is friendly, the food is great as well, and the girls are pretty.... (thats always a bonus) :-)

New York Peppercorn is where it's at
Submitted Wednesday, October 3, 2007 - 9:32pm [Dine in]

I've been to this particular location about 4 times in the last 2 years or so. I've always chosen the "New York Peppercorn" in medium-well. Each and every time, the steak turns out perfect for my liking. Just a tad bit of slight pink in the middle. I also love the little bit of fat it has on some of the corners. The fat tastes awesome when it's sizzling hot. The baked potato with all the dressings except for bacon is always great as well.
The building had history behind it. It used to be a Train Station back in the day. Not only that but there are rumors that the building is haunted. I've heard many stories about weird things happening with the employees and and some of the managers after the place closes for business.
I got lucky and the manager took my friend and I to the basement to see if we could find any ghosts. There is an outside entrance to the basement and thats where they keep a lot of the meat apparently. It was pretty cool actually because it looks more like a Cave than a basement. There are rocks and boulders down there. The manger brought a flashlight and we looked into some of the mini caves that lead to ...... ??? (i have no idea)
We did see something creepy when we flashed the light into one of the holes. We saw two shiny eyes and it us out a little bit because we were talking about ghosts the whole time. It was either a cat or a raccoon ...... so those mini caves did have an exit not too far from that location.

Anyways .... I like the food here. The staff are friendly and the building has character and history.

My friends made me eat here
Submitted Wednesday, October 3, 2007 - 9:18pm [Dine in]

My 3 out of 5 = Okay'ish ... NOT Solid.
I went on a Saturday around lunch time and we had to wait outside for about 15 minutes which is alright I guess since I've waited around that time at other places such as the Keg, Cactus Club, or even Sammy J Peppers.
The price is okay considering how much you get BUT I would rather pay a few bucks more and get less IF it meant that the food was better in quality and taste.

The spanokapita was good. The lamb souvlaki was CHEWY!! My mouth was EXHAUSTED after eating that. I didn't like it at all. The meat wasn't so flavorful and of course, it took about 5 minutes to chew each piece of meat.

I also do not understand the hype about this place. I think most people are jumping the band wagon to be honest. I've had better Greek food elsewhere.

Over all: 3 out of 5. I consider this an okay place but nothing special and I'm still scratching my head about the hype around this place.

Over rated for sure
Submitted Sunday, September 2, 2007 - 9:21pm [Dine in]

I've been here a total of two times. The first time I thought it was cool because the "All you can eat meat" was a new thing for me. After checking it out a second time, I probably wouldn't come back again.
The meat is fresh enough I guess but it doesn't taste all that great. I would rather pay for a KEG size pepper corn steak which is around $26, same as the all you can eat at Sambas.
How much meat can one possibly eat?? I would rather have a little less meat but with GREAT taste instead of "so-so" meat that I can have as much of as I wanted.
The entertainment is lame from my point of view. I don't want 2 chicks to be shaking their butts in front of me while I eat.
I think everybody should at least check it out once just to experience the "all you can eat steak" thing but other wise...no thanks.

Flavorful Food
Submitted Sunday, September 2, 2007 - 9:12pm [Dine in]

I accidentally came across this little place. It's a combo of Mexican and Pakistani food. Interesting combo.
All the food is Halal. The food is surprisingly fresh, flavorful, and great quality. They cook the chicken greekstyle with that spinning chicken that they cut off from when a customer places an order.
The prices are pretty good, plus they have a stamp card. After 7 burritos, you get one for 50% off.
On the weekends they serve Pakistani food. I've never had a chance to go on the weekend but if the Mon-Friday (Mexican) menu is good, I'm sure the weekend menu will be just as great.
Definitely worth a look.

It USED to be good
Submitted Friday, August 31, 2007 - 4:09pm [Dine in]

This used to be one my favorite Indian Restaurants but not any more. I don't know what happened, maybe the cooks changed or they started to hate their job.
I used to enjoy the butter chicken. It WAS awesome.

The last few times I've had it, the chicken is not really fresh. Once, I've found hair in the food. Another time, I actually had a piece of metal in my butter chicken. (one of those big metal staples that are used to shut boxes!!!!!)?????????

I even checked it out last week after a few months break from the restaurant hoping that the food would be good again but I was disappointed. The chicken was green'ish looking and I asked for them to make it hot but it was mild. They always used to make it hot for me but last few times, they seem to forget.
I would actually give them less than 3 out of 5 but because of my good experiences from the past, they will get 3.

**Pretty good food here**
Submitted Friday, August 31, 2007 - 3:44pm [Dine in]

After checking out many Indian restaurants, I have learned that if an Indian restaurant is clean and the ambiance is modern/western, then the food is going to be garbage.
Now onto my reveiw:
This place is pretty clean although there is a weird smell but you get used to it.
The food is GOOD, maybe the price should come down just a tad bit but it's still worth the food. The food is good including the naan. They need to give bigger portions of Rice, SERIOUSLY.
Overall, not too bad. Worth a try.

This place is one of my favorites. This place is one of those well kept secrets. The food is SUPER GOOD. The service is great and did I mention, the food is GOOD!
One of my favorites is the "Chicken Rocket" and the "Chicken Wow". Chicken Wow is almost the same as the rocket but in a different format.
They have daily specials. The owners background is Lebanese. Oh yeah, the Chicken that they serve is Halal and on Friday's the beef is also Halal. Just in case some muslims may want to eat here.
Highly recommended, the prices are good, and the food is even better.

Worst Butter Chicken Ever
Submitted Friday, August 31, 2007 - 3:28pm [Dine in]

My Co-Workers and I ordered some food for pick up. When I ordered, I specifically asked them to make the butter chicken Hot & Spicy.
The butter chicken wasn't even mild, it was literally SWEET. It was the worst butter chicken I ever had. The consistency of the sauce was good but it didn't matter when it tastes like somebody dumped SUGAR into it. The rich was okay I guess. The naan bread was above average. But overall, because of the butter chicken I will not be coming back. The interior of the place looked good too.
I actually noticed that somebody else here also mentioned that the butterchicken was sweet. It was a bad food experience for me. I didn't go there to have dessert!!
