La Piazza Dario Ristorante3075 Slocan St., Vancouver
Asked to Vacate Table Before Dessert
Submitted Sunday, December 13, 2009 - 2:06pm [Dine in]

My wife invited her old office chums for a Christmas lunch. She choose Dario's and made the reservation for 11:30 AM. She arrived first and the last of her party at ~12:00. Everything was fine up to ordering dessert, around 1:00 PM. After the dessert waiter left, a few minutes later the dinner waiter came up and asked them to leave. My wife asked why and he said they were taking too long and another party was waiting for their table.

Well you can imagine my wife's embarrassment since she had chosen Dario's. As they were getting ready to leave the dessert showed up. Another embarrassing moment, since the two waiters obviously weren't talking to each other. They ate the dessert quickly and left, a truly memorably bad way to end the lunch.

Needless to say, she nor any of her lunch chums will be returning!

Jolly's Indian Bistro2928 W 4th, Vancouver
Balanced & Tasty
Submitted Sunday, September 6, 2009 - 3:08pm [Dine in]

My wife and I visited Jolly's for dinner two Saturdays in a row and liked it well each time. The Indian crepe tapas, tandoori, butter chicken and zucchini-paneer selections all came together nicely and surprised us with subtle spices and rich textures. You will find consistent use of a light mango sauce and fresh salad sides.

The naan is lighter than it looks and the garlic shreds make for a sharp flavour. The chai tea pot is another simple but satisfying winner, we went through two pots of this rich blend the first time with free refills.

The service was fine but I can see how things can slow down when full. Our waitress had to leave the premise to get change for a $20, we weren't sure why she left and came back until she explained. Jolly prepped our table and also delivered our tandorri plate to explain that he substituted sliced breast for the legs and added the mango salad mix as a bed.

Overall a good alternate to Rangoli's and recommend to go early as there are not a lot of tables for the space.

Memphis Blues Barbeque House1465 W. Broadway, Vancouver
Huge Disappointment with Ribs
Submitted Wednesday, July 1, 2009 - 7:57pm [Dine in]

My wife and I are long-time BBQ meat lovers and we decided to give Memphis Blues on Broadway a try last week. The pulled pork and sides were fine. So this week I laid out $26 for the full slab of ribs dinner, take-out. I had it home and on the plate in less than 20 minutes. My wife and I could not believe how bad it was. The pork tasted at least a day old and had no smoke ring. In fact it tasted boiled with a short time on the grill to brown it up. We ended up throwing most of it out.The take-out service was fine, but the reason you go to a BBQ place is the BBQ meat. So beware!
