Nice place for dinner if you have time to wait...
Submitted Tuesday, April 7, 2009 - 2:34am [Dine in]

Pretty good food and I love the decor!
However I'm so sick of these trendy Cactus Club type restaurants and how they hire a kabillion people but the service still sucks?!
First there is like three girls greeting you at the door, one girl to check your names off the reso list and one girl to carry the menus and another to take you to your table, it is so ridiculous. Then one to take your order, one to bring you your drinks, a different one to run your food. With having so many god damn people working your food still takes an hour, and another half hour to get your bill. So silly.

Diamond in the rough!
Submitted Tuesday, April 7, 2009 - 2:20am [Dine in]

I only first went here because we had late night sushi munchies and was pleasantly surprised.
The sushi is awesome!
Service is a little slow and it is kind of a dump, but it is some of the best Japanese I've had.

P.S.
Thank you to the guy who made the comment about cooks smoking, you made me laugh. Just so you know, 90 percent of cooks smoke, so if it freaks you out that much you shouldn't be eating out! Lol.
I don't smoke and yea its gross but its reality. And cmon, this site is to talk about the food and restaurants, not smoking!

Waited an hour for a pizza?
Submitted Sunday, April 5, 2009 - 10:53pm [Dine in]

So I finally went here for dinner instead of my usual breakfast.
I'm not quite sure what's going on because I have always had great service and food for breakfast, but dinner there sucks.
There was a few other tables who were onto their dessert and coffee so it wasn't very busy.
We waited an hour for a caesar salad and a pizza which is totally not acceptable, even if they screwed up and had to make it a second time, it still doesn't take that long.
Our server disappeared for that hour so we never had the chance to ask her, so we asked another girl about it and instantly they brought out our food??
The pizza was horrible, the only thing I liked was the pre made frozen crust. It had five slices of sausage on it, tonssss of cheese and this is the best part....the menu said it came with tomatoes on it and there was none! How ironic haha.
Anyways poor service, crappy food.
I will probably give it one more chance.

Awesome brunch!!!
Submitted Saturday, April 4, 2009 - 1:20am [Dine in]

Yummmm I love Provence!

The decor is very classy but not pretentionous at all! There are a lot of regulars from the area who just come down for a bite in jeans, sweats or baseball hats.
And even though the servers are very professional the atmosphere is super relaxed.

They are always packed for weekend brunch but do their best to accomidate the crowds.
The patio is amazing in summertime, even in other seasons since it is covered and heated.
Any menu choice will surely be good, if you are a french toast or waffle fan then you must try them!
The waffles are frozen from a local bakery but are still sooooo good and the french toast is cut from a baguette and dipped in cinnamon sugar, a nice change from regular bread.
Lobster omlette is great, made with fresh lobster and herbs. Actually they use fresh herbs in pretty much all their savoury items which I love!
A few really good vegetarian options too, I find vegetarian options to usually be bland but the veggie benny and omlette are both full of flavour!
Keep Provence in mind for a gourmet meal on the go too! They have a little take out counter with awesome daily made anti pasto items and delicious baked goods.
They serve Illy coffee too and make great lattes!
Its a little more higher priced but you get what you pay for!

Great service!
Submitted Saturday, April 4, 2009 - 1:00am [Dine in]

This has became my choice place for large group get togethers and birthdays.
I have always been impressed with the food, a little simple at times but nicely done.
Going here during Dine Out Vancouver is a good idea!
The servers have always been very accomidating, they have no problem with splitting up your bill. They even seated a group of 7 with no reso on a busy Friday night and quickly got us extra chairs when more people joined our group. Also I was very impressed with the service I received on my friends birthday, they stored our cake, put on the candles and brought it out, and also put up with our various drink and shooter requests.
Usually servers are in a hurry to take your order and move on to their other tables but here they make you feel comfotable and usually chat it up with you.
The THAI BUCKETS are a must have!
Great deal and who doesn't like sharing a huge bucket of backwashed alcohol amongst friends?! Haha
They usually have good daily drink specials too if that isn't your thing.

Nice place but crappy service and average food.
Submitted Saturday, April 4, 2009 - 12:47am [Dine in]

I have only been here once when it was fairly new but wasn't very impressed.
It was early in the evening so it was busy but it wasn't packed when we got there.
There seemed to be lots of staff, and most of them were hanging out and chatting instead of working.
We ordered our drinks and waited 45 minutes for them! We ordered appies at the same time but if we knew our service would be that slow we wouldn't have ordered food too. The bartender took a ten minute chat break in between orders, our server brought us things we didn't order and our martinis weren't very tasty.
Our appies came out in like an hour and they were pretty average, so we waited another half hour for the server to bring us our bill after we asked for it, waited at the debit machine for another 15 minutes because she couldn't figure out how to take our different methods or payment. She got really confused even when we tried to split it up as simply as possible. I mean how hard is it to press the split button on the computer?
So we left to eat dinner at Section3 which has always had much better service.

In the times I have been there my service has been a little inconsistent.
I usually order a salad or a pizza which has been good most of the time.
Our server has screwed up a couple times, but she fixed her mistakes or apologized so it wasn't a huge issue or anything.
One time when we ordered the creme brulee for dessert (The kind of creme brulee changes weekly) and I asked what kind of creme brulee they had at the moment. She told us she 'thought it was maple or something', so being a creme brulee fan I ordered it. There was only two other tables and it still took over 20 minutes to come out, I just waited patiently and our server came by twice to tell us it would be right out and the second time she came by she explained to us that they take a while to make. I was thinking umm no it doesn't haha, unless they are baking it from scratch. When I finally got it, it clearly wasn't just made so I wasn't sure why it took so long. It was the strangest creme brulee I have ever tasted, the top didn't taste like white sugar at all, it had this grainy texture, there was some kind of nuts in it which we should have been told about and it just tasted really gross. So I told the server I didn't like it and she took it off our bill.
I would give the creme brulee another chance though.
I really like the beer and wine selections and their weekly drink specials are a pretty good deal.

Excellent service, good bar food
Submitted Friday, April 3, 2009 - 11:26pm [Dine in]

Really good food for a bar at decent prices! I have really enjoyed their specials and pizzas. They have a decent drink list and I'm a fan of their martinis, really good!
Fun place to go for a few drinks with friends too, they usually have a dj spinning or playing good music, and the whole place looks like some funky cave. And they stay open fairly late.
Really attentive service and no complaints!

Really good unique sushi!
Submitted Friday, April 3, 2009 - 11:01pm [Dine in]

I looove the one of a kind sushi items they have created and always look forward to trying my new favorite sushi concoction.
Funky decor and really easy going atmosphere.
Only downside is the slow service and lack of serving staff. One time we were ready to leave and were escorted to the debit machine to pay and after our server got distracted and disappeared, we were left waiting for someone to ring us up for like 20 minutes! We had to choice to stand there while numerous people tried to help us and track down our server. If you want good non traditional Japanese and have lots of patience, you should give it a try!

Yummy vegetarian!
Submitted Friday, April 3, 2009 - 10:52pm [Dine in]

Perfect place for vegan, vegetarian or people with allergies.
Food is always great, my favs are the dragon bowls (Packed with tons of fresh veggies and tofu, always leftovers for tomorrow), sesame fries with cheese and miso gravy (Perfect for late night munchies), pita pizza, and my all time favorite....Baked apple crisp with vanilla ice cream (It is amazing! And must be accompanied with Mario's ice cream!)
Awesome mix of people who hang out there, it always has a great vibe, anytime of the day or night and the 24 hours a day makes it the best place to relax at 3am after a night out or to just grab a snack when every other place is closed. I love the live music that goes on quite often and beautiful local art on the walls.
However....the service usually pretty much blows, it is always busy, but they should have figured a way to get it together by now? I've usually had friendly servers, except one, but they always seemed so stressed from trying to keep track off so many tables, they definitely need to cough up the money and employ more people or something. I have never ever received water when I have asked for it numerous times, so I'm not sure if its Naam etiquette to get up and get your own water, which is usually what we do since its always strategically placed around the restaurant. And food takes a loooong time to come out, expect to wait at least 30 minutes.
The value is great for the quality of the food.

Good take Cantonese take out
Submitted Friday, April 3, 2009 - 9:52pm [Dine in]

I order take out or delivery from here quite often, the food is good and good service too. I haven't actually sat in the place and ate there, they only have like two tables and its really gross looking, so delivery is definately the best option. Going to the restaurant to pick up my food kind of made me worry about the cleanliness. I'd rather try and find a cleaner looking place to order from, from now on.

Ok I guess for AYCE sushi
Submitted Friday, April 3, 2009 - 9:37pm [Dine in]

I've been here numerous times and haven't had any of the issues that other reviewers have had.
I mean I don't really expect something phenominal when I'm paying ten bucks for AYCE. The food isn't bad but its not amazing. Service is decent and since they use the paper, pencil and number system, there isn't any mis communication.
The place isn't that bad looking but washrooms a tad dirty.
I'm pretty pleased with the value even though they took off a lot of good items from the AYCE menu.

Awesome cheap food! But kind of dirty looking restaurant.
Submitted Thursday, April 2, 2009 - 11:02pm [Dine in]

This is one of my favorite places for a cheap eat in the area! The soup, chips and rice that come before your meal are always yummy, the meat and veggies are always fresh and you pretty much make your food so you can't really go wrong. It is usually busy whenever I go but the food is always fried up very fast and a heaping large bowl will feed a very hungry person, I always get too much! Just be careful to not use too much sauce, a couple of spoonfuls is usually sufficient. The same couple is always working when we are there and they are always so sweet and polite, since its so cheap I usually tip well. I heard the have had health violations but I am hoping that's all cleared up because I really like this place. I wish they would spend a few bucks and spruce up the place though.

Amazing servers, great decor and good food everytime.
Submitted Monday, March 2, 2009 - 6:10pm [Dine in]

I've been here many many times and have never had anything to complain about. The food is always great and very large portions so come hungry, the best time to go is for brunch, even though on weekends the line is always out the door until late afternoon. The wait is well worth it, I find it as part of the charm, you can't go to Sophie's and not wait in a line up. On a sunny day, it's not bad at all. The servers are always really friendly and go ten extra miles to make you feel welcome, I like how down to earth the feeling is there. The management and the owner Sophie are always there for the weekend brunch rush, even filing waters and bussing tables. I can't even recommend a menu item because everything I've tried is great, but I do like the chicken wrap, the oatmeal, the french toast and the milkshakes are yummy! And the ever changing placemats of childrens artwork are definately the highlight of my visit.
I hope Sophies's is around for many more years to come.

Submitted Monday, March 2, 2009 - 5:57pm [Dine in]

I was there with a fairly large party on open mic night and having never been there or even heard of it, I was pretty impressed. I loved the atmosphere and service.

My veggie quesadila was pretty good, I mean how amazing can Mexican food be. I thought the margarita's were great and you can't go wrong on the prices, for meals and alcohol for the whole night for four people our bill was not much more than $100, and we drank a lot.

What impressed me the most was our server, (tall, thin guy with glasses and earrings), I didn't catch his name. Our table had over ten people and two kids, and we were consantly asking for things, he never messed up once or forgot anything. It was the best service I've had in a long time.

I will be going there again, especially for open mic night!

Extremely overpriced, crowded, and very average food.
Submitted Monday, March 2, 2009 - 5:45pm [Dine in]

I've walked by this restaurant many times and it has always looked appealing, so one night my boyfriend and I were looking for a place to eat and walked by it again so decided to try it out. I would have liked to see a menu on the door to check the prices and what they had to offer but there was none so we just went in anyways beause we were starving.
The inside was very awkward as soon as we came in and were seated, we had this strange table with one seat and a tiny portion of a booth, I had to ask the man beside us to get up so I could get into the booth seat in which his whole tables coats were laying on, it didnt even look like a table.

So we looked at the very small menu and were disappointed by the high prices but I assumed the food would be awesome and worth it, then the server told us that all of their items were tapas so we would have to order at least four things for the two of us. I looked at the wine list and also wasn't impressed, there was lots of options but most were very average wines, overpriced and by the bottle only. So we just ordered food, even though our server asked us four more times if we wanted wine as well as asking us twice if we would like sparkling water instead or regular water. I understand the concept of upselling but it was a little too pushy.

We got our first 'tapas', which was edamame. It was listed on the menu as a side so I wasn't expecting anything spectacular, they were plain with nothing on them and they were so over steamed that the shells were falling apart. The second item we ordered was the ribs which were basically no more than 2 ounces of meat and tasted pretty average. We got the curry chicken too which was not bad for a simple cream sauce with curry, again it was super small, not even an appetizer portion. I was thinking about dessert but was already very un impressed with our meal so we paid our $60 bill and went. We left so starving that we went to Safeway to buy a real meal.

Won't be going there again.
