yummy surprise

Went here today and was very impressed. They had set menus for lunch and I had the ebi mayo tempura that came with tempura Japanese lettuce, with rice, miso soup and salad for $9.95. My companion had a salad of raw salmon and tuna on rice, with miso soup and salad for $11.95. Both great value and we were stuffed and didn't finish our meal. The place is very funky design but very minimalist. The presentation was outstanding and the food very fresh.

They couldn't even have tried to make it worse

Went on Wednesday night and the whole experience was awful. I was with a client so didn't want to say anything to management without looking bad and I am regretting it today. My client was no doubt as unimpressed as I was.

My wok squid was rubbery. Having had the wok squid at Dockside and Sandbar recently I can't even tell you how bad Brown's wok squid was in comparison. The rest of my food came lukewarm with various food items that were obviously a result from a messy kitchen as they were not listed on the menu as included (and one or two of something doesn't count as an added bonus I don't think ).
Our server was disinterested. One of us would order a drink and she would walk away to get it, not even checking with the other person. The kitchen at one point must have really liked one of the songs since they cranked the volume up so loud we could not continue our conversation. Thank goodness it was moderately turned down once the song was over. Then we are had to listen to hits of the 70's and 80's... I could go into detail about our bad service/ambiance and food, but why bother? I feel I have wasted enough time with Browns on 4th.

Waste of Time
Submitted Friday, October 3, 2008 - 4:21pm [Dine in]

I have been here a few times over the years as I live close by. The last time wasn't a very good experience but I thought perhaps it was just a one time thing. Side Note- Yes, the grumpy bartender was there. I ordered a margarita on the rocks at the bar waiting for a table and he pulled it out of the bar fridge. I said, did you just pull it out of the fridge? and he replied, I just made it, I make two at a time. Ugh, It tasted like a drink that had been sitting in a beer fridge. Does it really take that long to make a lime margarita on the rocks??

Thinking this was a one off experience, I went back last night. Same attitudes from the staff total indifference. Asking for suggestions we recieved responses such as, I don't know I don't eat seafood. Other people seem to like it? People like to order this or this? Not helpful at all. Our entrees came while we were still eating our appetizer. The salsa and chip are fantastic but it ended there, the rest of the food was boring and plain. Hum drum.

As for the margarita that I had last night? It must have been the one from the bar fridge....

Went here for lunch and the service was slow... the server would disappear and you would be half done your meal before the item you had requested appeared (ie- ketchup, water etc). I can understand if a place is busy but at one point the two of us were the only ones in there! The server wasn't rude just disinterested, not even a hi as we got to the table just; what would you like to drink?
The food was alright but nothing special. I had what turned out to be a glorified pesto cheese sandwhich. It was way too much they needed to lose an ingredient or two. For the prices they are charging there are much better restaurants to go in Vancouver which are funkier, friendlier and have better food. Even if the food was less expensive I wouldn't go back. This was much lunch experience I can only imagine the disappointment people who come here for a special dinner would feel..

excellent!

Went with clients today for lunch in Gastown. We had decided on Water Street Cafe and had made reservations. We were greeted at the front door by last name although we hadn't even mentioned our name just that we had reservations. Seated promptly we were greeted immediately. Two f our group had the seared halibut which they were very impressed by. Another one of group had the brie/fritatta dish which looked amazing and I had the tortellini with peas and proschiutto. The pear/rosemary soup looked to good to pass up so that was shared and it was very delcious hopefully it will become a weekly treat on the menu. The restaurant was fairly busy but not uncomfortable and our meals came quickly. For a restaurant that appears to have the tables close together there wasn't any background noise that you tend to see in busy smaller places. I would definately recommend going again. The prices at lunch were mostly from $11-$16 so not much different then your mid range restaurants and the food is WAY better.

Great food/deal for Dine Out!
Submitted Tuesday, January 22, 2008 - 12:54pm [Dine in]

Four of us decided last minute to go for dinner and I saw that the menu for Dine Out was only $15 at the RMFC. Three of us had pizza our other friend the vegetarian lasagne,. Everything was delicious and we were totally full! Service was great and the restaurant was busier then I would expect on a Monday. I would suggest reservations if there are more then two of you. We were all very impressed at the food and then even more so when we got the bill. I did notice that their prices had come down on their regular menu as that had always been a deterant from going there more often. I will definately go back soon!

Could have been better
Submitted Tuesday, January 30, 2007 - 4:26pm [Dine in]

My girlfriends were set on coming here last Saturday and were told that they they were no longer taking reservations. We showed up and there was a cancellation so we got a table. I sat on the booth side but my friends did complain of the uncomfortable chairs. We didn't realize it was dine out vancouver but we did take advantage of it. The food was good, but since I eat in Yaletown regularily I have had much better food for the same price or less. The drinks at $10 seemed expensive. The servers seemed a little CactusClubby with their ill fitted outfits and just got out of bed appearance. Our server kept bashing down every plate and drink onto the table, startling us every time. I was certain something was going to break. My friend had a craving for the yam fries so they were the first thing that was ordered. We assumed they weren't coming until viola! they appeared after our entrees. The server didn't even say anything. You would think she would have something about an appetizer coming after the appetizers and entrees? We just laughed it off and then after dessert and the bill was paid for we chatted for another 15 minutes. The server did everything other then kick us out of the chairs to get us to leave. I wouldn't go again unless I was stuck on the North Shore. I think it would be good as a lounge/drink place but as for a higher end restaurant, forget it! Spend the extra money on cab fare and head overtown if you want a good meal for the same price.

Excellent!
Submitted Tuesday, January 30, 2007 - 4:11pm [Dine in]

I went to Coast last Friday night for Dine Out Vancouver. There were 10 of us who ordered from the different choices available and no one was disappointed. The restaurant was packed but our service was really good. It was noisy but there were 10 of us so I am sure we added to the noise more then the smaller tables around us. I would recommend to go to this restaurant the food was fantastic! Make sure you have a reservation. Ours was for 9pm and the I didn't see an empty table there for hours. I will definately go back and check out the regular menu.

Go to Go Fish!
Submitted Monday, April 24, 2006 - 5:04pm [Dine in]

Go Fish is next to Granville Island on the wharf as you are walking towards Kits Beach. It is like a beachfront concession so you don't want to go on a rainy day unless you are planning take out. You can't beat the view on a sunny day though! you will feel very cool knowing about this hole in the wall location spot even though I have seen up to 10 people in line! You get your food in a plastic basket and keep an eye out for a seat on their small deck otherwise you are sitting on the wharf being sized up by the sea gulls. I have been here 4xs now and each time with a friend from the "Rock" so there in lies a true expert when it comes to seafood. I always have had the fish and chips but I have seen my friends have everything from Indian Fish Dishes to oystery poor boy burgers. No one has complained! They are not licensed but that hasn't stopped a few of my friends from bringing their own and just eating around the corner. Great place to take tourists/ a date/newbies or just hung over friends. They will all be impressed. Meals range from $8-$15. My 2 piece halibut with lots of chips was $10. Bring your hunger and you won't be disappointed. Only downfall? limited hours, I think they are only open 11-6pm.
